This is pretty neat. Though, not all that practical in some regards. Like if you can't find suitable wall material in whatever local you find yourself in.

I think the idea is you pick them up when you sit down, though i'd think it would be easier just to use the pipe and put earth on the base to stop it falling over

I think it is more for hikers to lessen their pack weight and size. I would rather have a complete system and not rely on needing dirt or stones to make up part of the stove.

Here's a rocket stove I made a few months ago or more (reposted image). It has fiberglass insulation inside. It is made from discarded food cans, rivets, and coat hanger wire. It weighs next to nothing and only needs a few tiny sticks to boil a small pot of water.

I want to make another one with a few added features and make it a bit taller.

Just google "DIY can rocket stove" and look at a few designs. Using fiberglass or rock/mineral wool makes them much lighter than the ones that use sand, gravel, or soil as insulation. Most designs, including the one pictured that I made need to have a taller chimney to really get the proper burn to make the very clean burning.

I saw this in another thread and thought it belonged here too:

No, I just cut the opening really tight with a pair of tin snips. It is riveted to the bigger can though. The heat discoloration comes from the fire inside.

Not something people often have laying around, but if you ever bought one a rocket stove is a good way to get a second use out of the keg shell.
