Go to a craft store, you can get bags of colored sticks and felt balls and all kinds of kid's craft bullshit for a couple of bucks.

Unfinished wood beads\knobs in two sizes
Paint
3/8" dowels or nylon tubing
3/8" Wood-boring drill bit
Bar clamp for holding the wooden balls while you drill holes in them.
Wood glue (if you used dowels) or hot glue (if you used plastic tubing)

Biggest pain will be drilling all the holes.

But usually it takes many hours of work and meticulous patience that I don't think people usually have.

how much time you got?
Styrofoam balls and sticks not a bad idea
get floral foam, and water based poly, sand paper, some high build primer, then paint of your choice.
sand the floral foam with 220 grit, blow it off remove foam dust.
paint it with the water based poly, sand again
paint it with poly
3 coats should do it
spray with high build primer ( get from auto parts store) sand
pime again and sand with 400 grit
spray paint
fucking looks boss if you take your time
you prep it right and you can make them look almost completely round, then if you wetsand you can make them look completely glossy.
also its fucking cheap and just takes tons of time
why the water based poly? because spray paint eats styofoam away fast
why high build primer?
because foam has tons of little fucking holes that never vanish fully
why spray paint? cause its fucking cheap

you could also do all the prep work but no priming, then cover it in fiberglass
when the glass dries you can melt out the foam and have a hollow ball
