Hey fellas, been a while. Sorry I kinda disappeared after my multi-thread battlemech simulator bonanza... the damn thing got me a job, and I've been busy enjoying a stable income.

You guys gave me a crapload of support through the project, and I want to let you guys know that I really appreciate the help, suggestions, and moral support. I'm gonna dump some pics of the 'finished' product and what limited in-action shots I got. Sadly I didn't get any video... I was stressed out to all hell getting this thing set up in galleries at school and presenting it at a special exhibition I was invited to at the end of the school year.

https://archive.installgentoo.net/cgi-board.pl/diy/thread/405802

Thread 3:
https://archive.installgentoo.net/cgi-board.pl/diy/thread/412785

To anyone who hasn't seen this before, here's a tl;dnr: For my ICAM senior thesis project for my studies at UCSD, I set out to build a working 'battlemech' cockpit, complete with control panels, joysticks, pedals, and surround sound system, as well as code my own simulation to run in it. The project took two quarters of school (about six months total). The first three months were mostly spent building the cockpit, and the second three were spent mostly coding the simulation in C# through the Unity game development engine.

Total new materials cost in the ballpark of $1,000, not including existing crap I had laying around the garage and my own desktop computer that I ran the thing with.

I'm not gonna repost a bunch of pictures from the old threads (because there are a crapton), though maybe I'll try to put together an album of them on imgur or something.

This project was intense because I was basically banking my future on it. I poured my heart and soul into this thing for six months straight with the intent of using it as a sort of "physical business card" that I could show as a kind of culmination of all of my abilities from coding and fabrication. I like to think of myself as a "generalist," so I needed a project that spanned across several disciplines.

Long story short, the gamble paid out. My professor/advisor for the project was Sheldon Brown, Director of the Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination at UCSD. At first he was skeptical when one of his students said he wanted to basically 'make a video game and an (impossible-to-complete-alone-in-six-months) simulator box, but a few weeks before the end of the project I was showing him the progress I had made on the simulation side and he simply offered me a job working at the Experimental Game Lab at UCSD. I've been employed there since July, making crazy experimental genetic/evolution/algorithmically-driven simulations of early life. It's awesome, and at the end of the day (or the beginning, as I usually choose my own hours), I get to go home and continue working on my battlemech game and other projects.

I have decided to retire the cockpit (as it is massive and, honestly, could have been built much better) (well, with more time... for basically three months I am quite proud of it) but continue working on the simulation as a stand-alone game. I found during development that the best way to get the game and the cockpit to agree with each other was to basically simulate the cockpit inside the game, complete with buttons and switches and displays, and then have the inputs from the cockpit controls simply control the simulated controls in the game... what this led to was a mouse-and-keyboard controlled mech simulator (along the lines of all those crazy German simulator games) that was actually a hell of a lot of fun to play around with. So, I've been working on making the game a full-fledged PC title.

I will have a playable web-release beta you guys can check out within a few days. You gotta promise not to spread it around too much though as it's running off of my friend's webserver. :]

The game has come a hell of a long way. Mechs are basically fully functional, including giving commands to AI 'wingmen' and fighting against somewhat intelligent enemies. I actually went ahead and finished setting up a website for myself so that I could host all of the archived images. Here's my site (it's very rough and stupid at the moment, but it has the pictures up there):

There's a chance there's a market for a device like that. It'd need to be more polished off of course and support a wide array of similar games. I'd love to have a version for Arma games.

Now all you need to do if bring it to the next level: gimbling. Being able to move the entire unit based on the action happening in the game. It'd be like those old roller coaster rides they used to have in malls which you sat in a machine that looks like yours and it moved as you watched the screen.

Most new monitors are 16:9 format. Which is absolutely shit for everything but watching television. For some reason it has become standard. Vertical screen real estate is what you want when you write code or browse the web or a lot of other things.

Most software (e.g. browsers) furthermore has navigation panes etc. at the top or bottom of the screen so that all that is left is a small rectangle in the middle of the screen. Don't get me started on modern monitor design.... For the last three weeks I have been working of my laptop without my normal dual monitor setup. I am crying inside.

I remember that original thread, too. /o/ isn't typically very helpful.

That said, I was one of the naysayers. Cool art car, but an awful choice for a purposeful offroad vehicle. This coming from someone who owned one of these cars.

Suspension made of slush, no ground clearance, no traction control, weak transmission, ludicrously expensive differential options, small wheel bearings, poor rollover protection, etc. etc...

It wasn't a question of "can it go over dirt with small hills" it was a question of "is it worth the cost to modify to a serious offroad machine". Answer is still no.

>>548397
It's a sand swimmer/rally-x machine, not a rock crawler. I spin circles around the big offroad trucks and some of the dune buggies out there.

>The slushy suspension is great; I removed both sway bars and the thing is smooth as silk.
>Stock tC's are jokingly referred to as "monster trucks" because of their ground clearance; with the big A/T tires it clears most shit no problem.
>I installed a helical LSD that, when controlled with some precision braking, does great at biting and pulling.
>Transmission is surprisingly aggressively geared; first and second gear tear through the rough. I can chirp the tires up through 3rd.
>Wheel bearings... yeah, whatever.
>Poor rollover protection = don't frickin roll it.

With some paddles it would be well on par with a lot of the dune buggies out there.

As much as you want to argue with me I will argue back. Don't call it an 'art car'. It's a tool and it does it's job well.

Sounds pretty good. Stock shocks still? I'd be a little concerned about dampers wearing prematurely.
Stock they only had about 5" of ground clearance, but with tall offroad tires it's probably pretty useful.
The LSD is one of those really pricey complaints, but hey, you've got one and it even exists for the car so, great.
The manual transmission isn't really that terrible, but it's not overbuilt past the 200hp that the factory supercharger gave the car.

I'm not, nor ever attempted to imply that the car isn't or couldn't be capable. The implication is that you could have done so very much more with the same time and money invested in a different vehicle.

I'm glad you made it work, but that doesn't undo it being an awful initial choice for what you made.

I liked mine just fine. It just needed a stiffer suspension to not be awful to drive on the road, the factory tires were like rollerskates in the rain, and the tiny windows and huuuge pillars meant enormous blind spots.

Otherwise it was quiet, sharp, comfortable, and actually had measurable torque, unlike its competitors. The 2AZFE is a capable motor, with a lot of good decisions inside. Women looooved riding in it.

This reminds me so much of a place in Vegas I visited with the now ex-wife during our honeymoon. I think it was called Virtual World. You'd pay like $30 for a half-hour session of what to me seemed like the truest-to-life 'mech sim I've ever seen. Pretty sure it was a MW knockoff because if you loaded heavy on plasma you'd get maybe 4 shots off before the 'pod powered down due to 'overheating' until you frantically typed a shit-ton of code into the keypad to 'restart'. So for the rest of the day's gaming, my loadout consisted of 1 plasma, 2 heavy lasers, 4 light lasers, and the rest of my optional space crammed with heat-sinks or dissipators or whatever they called them. I'd find one of the only pools or streams of water in the map and stand in it, figuring after talking to the uber-nerd manager on smoke break that they'd have programmed it as true to MW RPG as possible. No gimbals, but small pneumatics and vibrators made it feel pretty 'real'. After slaughtering mai waifu and her dickheaded brother-in-law's team for a couple hours, we decided to go to dinner, on the way out they presented us with this cool Virtual World booklet that had the logo embossed and your game record printed out inside. Nerd-bro also told me that my shenanigans meant they were going to program huge gouts of steam to mark mechs who used the water as dumping-ground for heat. Was good feels, thanks for reminding me that 'mech games used to be fun and cool.

I do believe that Virtual World had BattleTech sim pods, which are fully licensed and official MechWarrior content (as BattleTech is the name for the entire series, MechWarrior included).

The fact that this dude basically garage-kitted one of those, and then wrote his own sim in 3 months is amazing.

Sorry man, I somehow didn't think to get any video of the damn thing in action... though you can imagine, someone sitting there with the game playin on the screen, haha. Again, beta coming up online within a few days. (Moving soon; I've been busy cleaning the house.)

HODOOORR! Thanks bro! I'm lucky to have what I have and to have been given the opportunities to make this cool stuff. Glad you guys are enjoying it!

That sounds rad! I remember a similar place in San Diego that was called "Virtual VR." They had cockpits with lights and control boards and such that you'd sit inside and play Dropship Command. They weren't quite as fancy as the ones you described, but they were similarly a fond memory of mine. I think I'm gonna have to keep making these things to keep the tradition alive!

>>551239
It's basically just a bracer with an external battery pack that holds my cell phone. Keeps it on me and available while leaving my hands free. It's handy for working in the garage because I can have instructions or videos or what have you playing on the phone while actually working on the project, and the battery pack could keep the phone running all day long.

>>551487
Means a lot man, thanks! As far as the car, all it takes is a can of black paint, a jigsaw, some self-tapping screws, and a blatant disregard for the resale value.

hey OP if your still here I have two questions:

1. Did you go to uni and get qualified or did you learn through messing around with stuff/experience?

2. How did you get the money for all this and still have time to build it all?

>> No.551892

>>551889
1. I took three years of Mech Eng and two years of multimedia computing in the arts. I didn't learn shit in Mech Eng (let's all do calculus!) but I was introduced to Arduino through my computing in the arts studies. I took a few basic C and Java classes at school but I pretty much learned Javascript (which I used for this project) on my own time. I can link you the tutorials I used if you want them.

As far as fabrication skills, I've kinda been a tinkerer for my entire life. Dad taught me a lot of my woodworking/circuitry skills, and I also took a Fabrication and Design class in high school in which I learned a lot of good stuff.

2. I worked as a bus driver at my university for two years while I was living at home. While I still had to pay for gas and food and everything I was able to put a little bit away in savings each month, enough that I could then take six months off from working to devote myself to my last few months of school and this project. (The project in total cost in the ballpark of a grand.)

I still wonder who bought the tC.

Back when that thing was first posted they were impossible to find cheap. I traded mine in for MSRP, 10 months after I bought it (I'm the guy who talked about the suspension and all that) apparently right before the used value began to crash.

I mean, my sense is that nobody would do that to a $17,000 car that they bought with their own money.

My parents made the down payment and made payments on it for about a year (as a gift for getting accepted to my 1st choice college), but then I got a job and offered to make the payments myself. We got it for ~11k as it was a bit beat up. (Looked like the previous owner tried to buff the paint without using buffing compound... it was pretty bad.) Cracks in the bumpers and other stuff, too. Engine was fine though.

>> No.552163

It served it's purpose. It got me through school, it got me a job that paid it off in two weeks, and I had a crapton of fun building it. To be completely honest the finished product wasn't INCREDIMAZING, to me at least. It was a PITA to hook up the computer and everything, the control panel had some intermittent connection issues, and the acoustics on the inside were pretty bad (the sound system was great but the box itself made it sound kinda hollow and echoey). The game quickly outgrew the cockpit as well; the control panels became obsolete pretty quickly as I continued developing the game.

And while my woman didn't complain about it taking up space, I personally started to be bothered by the small-car-sized wooden box collecting dust in the garage.

I got a ton of pics, I enjoyed the build and the presentation, and I salvaged all of the working internals, so I feel pretty good about breaking 'er down.

Besides--now knowing what I learned from this build, I'm definitely going to have to build a new one that is an order of magnitude more badass than the original.

Not sure what Mark II is gonna be like. We'll probably have a normal keyboard plus some other professionally-built peripherals (like joystick/throttle stick, aux keypads, etc.) Making them was fun but I think it'd be awesome (and now that I have stable income) to put in some fancy professionally produced stuff.
