/diy/, I would like to build a homemade instrument of some sort. Something primitive that, at the very least, will keep it's tune and won't be hard to play. I had this idea to build an upright bass using an old bass drum for the body and then a wooden handrail for the neck. I figured this would be more effective and friendlier for the hand than just a wooden plank.

I still wanna do that idea but I might wanna see what my options are. Do you have any ideas or do you know where I could find blueprints or some shit for this?

I'm planning on making a bottle bass like this, albeit a five-string variation. I've never made an instrument before though, any advice on basic do's and don'ts before I start?

Making a string instrument that will actually keep it's tune doesn't seem like an easy thing to do to be honest. Bump for interest.

That's badass.

A Djembe is a good place to start.
Get a nice chunk of wood, work it to shape on the wood lathe. Buy yourself a skin on the net, they're not to hard to come by. Two metal rings tacked up. Ill make a full tutorial if you wish.

This one is simple enough, and given that you find nice wood, it will sound from "decent" to "pretty much there with that overpriced stick they used to sell a while ago". With the help of a FET PA, the piezo should handle more than easily stuff like stompboxes, electric instrument amps or synths. Modyfing the scale and adding varied support shouldn't be hard in order to make something in the scale of an upright bass.

Also, this might be simple enough, given basic knowledge with tools, or ingenuity.

Saw that. I like the idea but it looks clunky. I'd wanna put more strings on that.

>>4891
That'd be cool but I was thinking more so stringed instruments.

>>4955
I like that idea. Do you think it would work with 4 strings? What if I made it a smaller scale with smaller strings? Could I make like a uklele thing?

Also that jappo thing is sick. I'd love to build that.

get a bottle
put rice in it
put cap on bottle (important)
maracas

>Do you think it would work with 4 strings?
You'd have to put a truss rod on that shit, or deal with excruciating callibration.

>What if I made it a smaller scale with smaller strings?
Might be more likely, there's a few 2x1 4-stringed guitars in youtube, so an ukelele thing might... wait, what, an ukelele? Are you Zooey Deschanel in a corny movie or something?

I mean, seriously, get real about the kind of instrument you want to make/play. If you're doing it just for the achievement, that's cool, but you'd be wasting musical potential. rant over.

No, Djembes are for fags who do not wash their hair.

Here's a guide how to build a bulgarian or macedonian kaval(an endblown flute) from a pvc pipe.

You can watch a video of an end result from the link I posted in the subject field. Not bad, actually.

Sure, there's like a million guides for that on the net. Instructables might be a good starting place.

This one is great. Simple as fuck, cheap too. You might even bde able to change the scale and you'd get that Zooey Deschanel music you want to make.

This is terribly useful as well

No sweat, Zooey. Just post your ukelele next to your nice tits when you're done with it.

Anyone tried making a sound pedal?
