Perimeter alarm for camping/survival situations, any suggestions? If I go camping alone or with a friend or two and it's not possible to have someone on rotating watch through the night, but would wake me up if an animal or human approaches the camp. Prefences: Reusable, no electrics, lightweight, cheap, covers as large area as possible and functional in sub-zero conditions as well. I can only think of bells on a wire/thread? Thanks, /diy/.

Bells on paracord is probably your best bet. You can use pots and pans for weight issues. When you wash in the night, hang your pots and pans on a line to dry out and then attach this line around your camp so if anybody trips over it it's gonna tug on them.

Another note is to put it about a foot of the floor so that small rodents don't trip it; a rat could easily do so.

Maybe you could do something like a spring snare trap, but instead of a snare you have your pots and then tie a trip-wire around your camp.

Bells on bank line work better. The bank line is cheaper, you can buy hundred of feet for a few bucks, sturdy as fuck, harder to see.

Navy blue/Dark brown/dark green paracord in the dark is going to be nigh on invisible, much stronger and you can buy 100ft for under £10.

Over here, 100ft usually goes for like 10-15 dollars. I can buy five hundred feet of bank line for 3 bucks, I have seen some do 150-200 pound test, not as strong as paracord, but still pretty strong. I can then save my paracord for more important stuff.

Hey thanks for your pots and pans idea. I think I figured it out (see pic).
1) Place one or two poles next to my tent
2) Tie paracord to one of the poles and run the line freely through the other one without tying a knot
3) Run paracord continiously around the perimeter without tying any knots or wrapping in around branches. High enough so the small animals won't trip it (thanks again!)
4) At the end tie a wire to paracord and loosely attach it to another wire so it's just sturdy enough to hold the weight of the pots & pans with some tolerance if wind waves them around.
5) Hang the pots & pans
6a) Sleep restfully
6b) Awake to the presence of an intruder when pans & pots fall next to you when the whole paracord comes loose.

you really should go with bells man, they take up little to no room, as well as not able to be seen, unlike a pots and pans.

Mousetraps and fishing line. Easily nailed to a tree.
Also, use your google-fu to search 12 gauge perimeter alarms. Tons of em out there for sale.

I never sleep on or near the ground when innawoods alone. Hammock in a big tree at least 8 feet up. Rigged so that I can't roll out of it in my sleep.

Like this, you'll want tubing secured to the tree that the paracord goes through as well so it doesn't fall down. It also won't wear it out by grinding the the tree.

I really don't think you're going to get enough energy transfer through that cord to move the pans much, let alone enough to wake you out of a nights sleep.

Simplest solution? Just bring a dog.

I'll have the pots & pans anyway, so they don't add any weight. If they are hung next to the tent (as in my pic) I reckon they don't cause any suspicion (unless they are shiny etc). If I put bells on to the line, will I be able to hear them if I'm in really deep sleep after exhausting trip on foot?

>>514252
Thanks, I'll try that as well. How about bicycle bells with a fishing line attached to the lever? I'll have to study and build a 7,62x39 or 9x19 prototype perimeter alarm, as I've got plenty of those.

>>514282
I'll have to try that out as well. Any experience in sub-zero (-30c) temperatures?

>>514288
Good point, I'll see how much friction the trees cause to the cord.

>>514290
Yeah the idea is that if someone/something trips to the cord, the loosely attached wire comes loose and the whole line of pots & pans falls down, so in theory it's gravity powered alarm. Maybe if I'll hang something heavy on the line as well it'll probably be more reliable. Yep, a dog or 7 of my mates would be good to bring along, but this is a system for the worst case scenario in which I'm alone in the woods.

Can't you just camp somewhere which is far enough from the nearest city so that there aren't any hobos, but not so far enough that there are bears?

>>514657
Yeah I'd like to but the bears and especially wolves are out there when I get out of my porch, and I resemble a hobo quite a lot myself :D . It's pitch black here in the fall until the snow comes, so whenever I'm walking the dogs etc I have a semiautomatic with a light with me. I like to do my camping "survival/military style" to practice my skills for the worst case scenario while enjoying nature and having fun. So I made this thread to formulate a plan for such a situation. And this has been very fruitful, so thanks for everybody involved!

Just put your sleeping bag in the hammock when it gets cold, and you will be fine ...

>>514282
I SECOND this. Hommocks keep you save up in the air, and you can sleep without fear. Better play it save, than gettin eaten your face of by a wild boar (happend to a guy in this area of germany two years ago).

wont this send a deer running for its live, possibly through your tent / campsite?
i like the idea and it sure as hell will wake you.

perhaps this thing near your head with a bell instead of a shell so it will wake you, and you alone..?
