Hey /diy/ I'm working on loading up a few computers with software to "do anything" for community hacker space and LAN parties. and I was wondering if you guys have any relevant software packages you think should join the list? Win7x64. Here's a list of somewhat relevant software. prefer free or open source.

-Photo & Graphics-

Image Editor: GIMP
3D Content Creation Suite: Blender
Photo Management: digiKam
3D CAD: FreeCAD
Electronics CAD: KiCad
2D CAD: LibreCAD
Image Processor: RawTherapee
Vector Graphics Editor: Inkscape

its a future project, no one in our group is really linux savvy atm.

>> No.497862

Basically, if you make any edits or changes, you cannot easily revert to the original recording. Like, if you trim something in Audacity, you can't say, stretch the sides of the clip to bring the trimmed sections back. A non-destructive editor, like Sony ACID, would let you do this because you're not changing the actual clip itself, but rather putting edits around a clip that is stored in memory, so the original loaded into RAM is not itself modified until it is saved.

Get Linux Mint. Seriously, you may never want to go back to Windows 7.

intredasting. so with audacity you need to make backups and a lot of saves.

>> No.497868

>>497866
Yeah, more or less. But it's not really *meant* to do anything aside from small and quick edits. If you're trying to manage any project where its destructiveness is going to hinder you, then you're using the wrong tool.

That may have been necessary 10 years ago, but today everything is just about as plug and play as you can get.
I suggest Xubunu or Mint.

GIMP
Inkscape
ImageMagik
VLC/MPlayer
mkvtoolnix
PureData
Audacity
gmusicbrowser
gEDA suite
Anki
LibreOffice
emacs/vim
pdftk
Transmission/Deluge/rTorrent
Firefox
Thunderbird
Filezilla

Set for life.

Some things I've had to do before utilized functions from Inkscape.

For if you ever need to open and edit mkvs.

PureData is fucking awesome.
It won't be for everyone, but I love and am trying to spread the word of it"s existence. It's really geared towards [live] music production. Computer programming for the guitar pedal minded.

gmusicbrowser is one of the greatest programs to have ever graced my life.
Clementine a shit comparatively (and I used to use it).

Never used KiCad, so I'm not sure - Only recently discover gEDA myself.

pdftk is another one that has just made my life unmeasurably easier. It's easy to use - If you're going to avoid it because you're afraid of command line, well then there's no helping you.

winscp
pls stop using windows.
It's such shit.

instead of vlc, you might consider using daum pot player. maybe it's just me, but I usually have a fair amount of problems when playing high definition shows. I'd also guess that not all of your computers are going to be running the latest hardware, and vlc kinda uses raw pc power to compensate it's coding.

pot player it's a derivative of kplayer, which is a rock solid Linux media player, albeit obnoxious as hell to use for a beginner. pot player is written for Windows, and works great on lighter systems. lots of good features too.

>> No.497947

>>497945
haven't heard of pot player but ill look into it. if vlc is shit id probably switch to mpchc. thanks for the suggestion.

>> No.497955

Problem is that a lot of free software is shit compared to proprietary alternatives. GIMP is a joke compared to photoshop. And in video and audio editing there isn't even something that could pass a free alternative to the industry standards like Sony Vegas or Ableton Live.

Anyways, no one has mentioned WinAVR, it's obligatory.

I'd recommend keeping vlc on as well as a backup. I use mpc-hc as my default player, but vlc is much better at playing broken, corrupted or incompletely downloaded files in my experience.

You might also want an assembly compiler just for the challenge of it.

I don't get it. It asks you if you want to edit the file or edit a copy of it.

Also, if you do something, like say trim the edges, then it's counter intuitive that you can revert that change inadvertently by modifying the rest of the audio clip in some way, no? You can always ctrl+z in audacity if you want to go back.

>> No.498340

>>498332
And what if you want to change something a year from now? Nondestructive editors basically store a list of operations to be applied to the source material.

Ah, so it's like working with say layers in photoshop and then saving as a PSD? I guess with audacity you'd have to redo everything.
