The other thread died, so let's get another brainstorm/experience session going.

E-Commerce/Internet
Real Estate
Any other profitable business venture.

Personally, I work in construction and do some real estate on the side, but I need more capital to expand so I am considering some lean startup E-Commerce site.. any successes/experiences here? I'll help with any real estate questions

How do I gain revenue/investments for a website start-up? I just need enough money for somebody to build the site (which as a basic layout), and an independent server for hosting. costing around $2000. How do I find people when it doesn't even exist yet?

Web designer here. Depends on the quality of site you want. There are plenty of people out there willing to take a small amount of money and build you a super shitty site.

Good web designer is going to run you between $40 and $80 an hour depending on their skill level and if they are coding it or not.

Trust me on this, it is much better to have a decent site upfront. Nothing scares people away from something quite like a shitty website.

As for the server, you can build one yourself or pay a company monthly for somebody to host it. If you just need a regular site, regular hosting would be fine and you don't need a dedicated server. Hosting can be found for between $30 and $100 a year for small sites, and goes up from there. My personal portfolio site costs about $40 a year to maintain.

As for generating the revenue to do this, most investors are not going to give you money unless you have a great idea for something, along with some solid evidence it will do well.

What do you want to do as far as a starup goes? Please don't say "The next Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Etsy/Ebay/Amazon/Etc."

Ah, by the way, I make my living doing web design. I work from home most of the time (currently on a contract at Microsoft until July) and it is pretty exciting.

I also do graphic design, branding and motion design. You could teach yourself these things if you wanted to make money I suppose.

I understand that finding a good developer is costly, but I myself am in quite a financial hole right now... I am in no position to be offering 80 an hour (which is why I seek investors)

Don't worry, the idea is nothing like "The next Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Etsy/Ebay/Amazon/Etc." I have confidence, but I'm not silly.

I would share the idea but it's simplicity would give it away... I'm sorry Anon.

Though, maybe you could answer some things
Who are some reliable web hosts?
&
What kind of websites would require a dedicated server? For example, would a classifieds site need one-or could I rely on a regular hosting plan.

I apologize for my ignorance on these matters, just looking for help

That's also awesome, congrats on that. and yeah I would teach myself but I want to get this site on the market before someone else does.

Not who you're responding to, but I do a lot of web programming so I can field your server question. The only time you'd need a dedicated server is if you need a lot of control over the environment, for instance specific versions of this or that, actual programs installed, like Sharepoint or Zimbra, or have a high enough load that extra oomph is required.

Pretty much this. If you are just hosting basic content (like a blog, restaurant website, travel guide, basic webstore etc) standard hosting is fine.

If you want something that can handle a ton of people at once (like 4chan, Amazon, Facebook, etc) then you get into server realm.

Hosts will depend on need.

the company I work for goes through netfirms for hosting. dirt cheap and they have a website builder (drag and drop plus custom code) so you can do a lot with it, while still having some pleasing layout styles to work with.

For a small business it isn't too bad, but for a bigger company (multiple locations, handling sales or income online, ads, specific flash/java features, anything out of the designers limits you'll want a professional designer to do it on contract (or part time position, of a really big company/fast growing.

This would all be easy to agree with if I had the money. Any ideas on that topic?

I appreciate all the info though, it's all stuff I've been questioning.

I'm interested in this as well; anybody know if wordpress is good for developing a website?

pros and cons?

really depends. it's a cms for blogs that got out of control. if you want a community site use something like typo3.
