hey /diy/,

my room is really small. any ideas on how to make the space more interesting / appealing to the eye?

Pic related?

Small furniture.
Things that fold up or away to make the space loo more open.

Decorate it jail style. Bars in window, replace comp chair with toilet seat etc.. And of course cover a little stash behind wall poster (which is a nude girl ofc..)

Remove the shelves above the desk or find another desk with drawers underneath. If possible, knock out some of the wall and make the window bigger. It will bring more natural light in and make the room feel more open.

Repaint this wall a pale neutral colour, though add in a contrasting trim. Buy a matching set of sheets.

Do you need two lamps? One reading lamp should suffice. On the right there are what look like paintings, hang them up if you like them, or bin them.

Bottom left, is that a hamper or a bin? If hamper, use one single hamper for everyone in the house, located in the bathroom. If its a bin, find a smaller one.

I'm assuming you're living out of that suitcase right now. If you could find a small set of drawers to put clothes in, it would feel like a more permanent place.

With small rooms like this, its important that everything has a place, there seems to be a few things that are just laying around at the moment.

Any other pics or a scale diagram would help with furniture placement too.

Looks like you might have a hide away bed there. You just got to replace that desk with something more portable, moveable, foldable. Look into folding desks, even the cheap paper ones are tough and reusable. Move lamp in corner away and exchange for ceiling lamp. Use ceiling hooks to hang one in corner for night time use. Use light bulb plugin and bulb adaptors to free up plugin and floor space. Corner shelves are going to be your friend. Make one yourself and make it reach the ceiling. Hanging netting might give you even more space. Fold away bed, or bed to couch converting pillows/body pillows can be done easy. Mirrors and/or bold posters/framed work as well.

turn your bed into a murphy bed that turns into shelves when folded up. add a door to secure the shelves when folded down

> advises tearing apart the fucking wall for a different shaped window

> advises using a glass desk (so ghetto)

> advises contrasty color rug in a tiny room

> advises ceiling fan

Bad taste, bad advice.

OP, you need a minimalist style, too much stuff will make the place feel even more claustrophobic. Bright/light colors, mirrors, good lighting.

If you are handy, short cabinets lining the walls up against the ceiling are a great way to create extra storage without taking up more floor space.

Multi-funtion furniture is a MUST. A nice futon or fold out bed can double both for sleeping and sitting.

Desks are built deeper than they need to be, especially for flat panel displays or laptops, if you have one. Slice 6-12 inches off the back of your desk or make a new one out of about 18 in deep lumber. If you have a flat panel monitor, wall mount it on a hinge mount, then can double as a tv to watch from bed/futon.

no ceiling fan - messes with the lighting and creates distracting strobe effects, especially in small spaces.

Get rid of all floorstanding bookshelves. Instead, build shelves over the bed, since that is otherwise useless space. Also, under the bed/futon is often wasted space.

Architecture and design major here.
Things intruding into space make the space seem smaller, even if they're only little things, so get rid of those shelves above your desk and don't put a fan in like that other guy said.
Also you want to make the ceiling seem higher, so get shelves and cabinets that are less tall, because high ones bring the ceiling down (or make it appear that way)
Also:
>Put storage boxes under your bed to store things that would otherwise be on your high shelves/ cabinets.
>Paint the walls white. All of them.
>Clean up your mess regularly.
>Get a stand for your bike so it can sit vertically.
>Don't make your window lower and wider like some other guy suggested.
>Get a chair that fits under the desk better
>Provide us with a rough sketch of your floor plan so we can help you more with furniture arrangement.

Remove the shelves over the desk and remove the bookcase on the right side (replace it with a dresser or half-height bookcase with doors). Basically, re-clutter and maximize the dimensions at eye-level.

The bed is not up against the wall but there's no space to walk around it. What happens if you rotate the bed 90 degrees and put it up against the right wall?

YIKES!
sheeit, you're going to need to use some real tricks to make that cell look bigger. Let's see:
>bed against wall
probably to the right side of the window coming toward the door. Maybe get a bunk bed so you can sit under it.
>shelves have to go.
combine with the bookshelf by getting a more multi use bookshelf/desk

your room made me depressed

I'm nearly 30 and I've stopped collecting CDs. I haven't gotten rid of the ones I own but man, the space that would save me...

I can't remember the last time I popped a CD into a player for the purpose of listening to it.
