Whats up? Me and my friend are trying to figure out what to do for our senior project. We want to build something sick. We've thought about like dune buggies and go carts so far. We're both pretty good mechanics/engineers and just for the sake of this we'll say we have an infinite budget. Any ideas?

Pic related : could build a hovercraft

huge rideable slug. make some mechanism to simulate the movement of the slug's foot when it moves.

>> No.410814

Hovercraft would be good. I watched a show where they made one a guy could ride on from a sheet of Styrofoam (really weak but the psi is low at any given point).

It takes quite a bit of horse-power. The real-life hovercrafts have a 2-stroke, 2-cylinder engine like a snowmobile or old jet-ski. They make at least 50-60 hp and are mostly aluminum, so very light.

You couldn't power a hovercraft with a 3hp Briggs and Stratton motor from a lawn-mower, which was the idea I had when I was about 8.

I build those, kinda lame for a senior project though.

I would say build a complex bar tending robot that makes mixed drinks. Make sure it looks cool doing it.

They have those under every bridge in Germany. Try something like a civilian drone project. Could make one to monitor the school for the Principal

K, so, under every bridge in Germany, there is a bar with a robot bartender? I guess I'm just a dumb 'Merican, but fucking pics or it doesn't exist.

If you are going to build something awesome, why not build a WIG craft.

Personally i prefer the lippisch type with the reversed delta.

A machine that puts condoms on dicks. Simple, funny, and useful.

1) Put condom in slot/hand of robot.

2) Rip package.

3) Test for the the right side.

4) Stick you dick in from of the robot.

5) The robot puts condom on.

6) ???

7) Senior Project

this ^ is true, and it is the main reason that hovercraft are not used more than they are. They have BIG power requirements, and so they always have high fuel consumption.

If you only want to build a school-science-project type thing that only needs to work on a smooth floor, then a 1/2-HP vacuum cleaner motor will work as the lift motor (with an extension cord of course). If you want to go over rough ground tho, then you're going to need 5HP at least for the skirt blower.

The horizontal thrust is a (power) problem as well. A conventional straight-bladed airplane propeller only gives about 2 lbs of thrust per HP. Propfan-style propellers (with broad & curved blades) can give between 2.5 and 3 lbs of thrust per HP, but then making them would be a separate project all on its own. They must be kevlar & carbon fiber composite as wood isn't strong enough.

I ain't saying it can't be done, there's websites of people doing it. But it can't be done with small engines.

You do not seem to be a well informed laddie.
That specific make and model is infamous for a whole slew of malfunctions and being expensive with very poor after sale service. In my humble opinion you've got to 'luck out' a bit with the hardware but especially with the software. Intensive maintenance is also necessary with most models. Consensus on /b/ is that it's simply cheaper and easier to just rent one whenever you are in need.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with mine, but there sure as shit are moments that I regret acquiring one. My personal advice is to go with a more durable model, the cheaper ones look alluring but aren't very dependable and break down easily. I had to learn that last lesson the hard way.

They're also a bit like laptops, cellphones and cars. They sure look good when newly bought, but your rich friends will frequently acquire newer models that make yours look increasingly worn out and less pretty.

With some luck yours will still be functioning properly, so you'll feel a moral obligation to keep using it since there is no real reason to replace it, but secretly you'll be jealous.

Isn't that rather generic? Does it strictly have to be a man-rideable vehicle?

If not, design a 5-stepper(or servo?) robotic arm. That have grippers on both ends.
The grippers can interlink for a strong locking connection to other grippers.
And the locking-gripper connection have a power conduit from one end to the other.

Build 50 of these.
Build a central platform hosting a gasoline generator, or run it on a 10kW capable grid cable, and lots of gripper grips, and some central electronics.

Have the whole mess walk around, climb stuff and link it's surplus arms to reach distant places.

Bonus points if it can build stuff and if humans can safely ride on it.
