Can you recommend a good, preferably 3D room or house layout/floor plan program? Something that can help me visualize a space in 3D beyond a flat grid. Free is good, but I'm not averse to paying for a product if it's worth it.

Just follow Randy's instructions. Should've paid more attention in class.

there are a few for android if you have a tablet/smartphone.
those tend to be free/cheap, and limited - so no confusion.

Google Sketch or whatever that was. I'm pretty sure they still have it. It's quick and easy to create basic shapes on planes, a fucking toddler could do it.

Downloading this now. It was free for me without a .edu, I just called myself a mentor.

I'll give this a look too--I don't expect my phone will do it justice, but it'll give me something else to play with.

I must be new here; I didn't catch your references.

Thanks all!

Not new, I'm doing something very similar at college right now. Thought one of my class mates might be looking for help here, and even though I know the chances are slim it would have been awesome if I caught them off guard with that comment. Sorry, please disregard my previous statement.

I can vouch for Google Sketchup. Watch the tutorials or you're just wasting your time. Very useful tricks.

The Sims 1 \o/. Or maybe just Autodesk 3ds Max 2013 with the student licence. I'm optimising my 12m^2 room with it. The results look decent but you have to build every single object from scratch.
