Hello /diy/ I plan to build a storage container house in 2-3 years. I have a little saved up and am in a position to save $700 a month or so. I plan to have 1 of the units as a kitchen, 1 as a dining hall, 1 as a living room/lounge and 2 as bedrooms (2 bedrooms per unit). there will be 1 bathroom in the dining room, 1 in the living room, and 1 in two of the bedrooms. I know I need 5 units here. Maybe a 6th as a storage shed. I'm assuming this will run me 100k after the land. I'm not sure how I would arrange them. Any ideas?

You should use mixed materials for the house.

Could also have one storage container slightly under earth so it has a green roof and good insulation.

Until the wall mechanism breaks and you enjoy rain and wind throughout your living room.

Lol, makes me think of all those flip-out headlights on cars from the 80s. A few years later you see cars driving around with one headlight sticking up.

I was thinking something like this. The living kitchen and dining room being on bottom and providing a balcony for each bedroom. I know the walls would need to be reinforced for something like this because they're only meant to hole weight at the corners.

Why do you need so many bedrooms and bathrooms? Part of the reason for building a house from storage containers is to reduce the environmental impact normally associated with traditional house construction. By building so large you completely negate the benefit. Unless of cours you need 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, a lounge, and all the extra space.

Cars use their mechanisms almost every nigh. Houses would only use that mechanism rarely.

Is that a huge open plan living area in the middle? If so I like it, but if those lines are walls then maybe not so great.

Maybe you could consider something more like this, just seemed a touch cleaner and would give it a more solid outline

Do you worry about your garage door failing and caving in like you just described? No? Then why are those living room walls different?

Oh shit love those.

So this is a /diy/ meme right?
What are the benefits?
Aren't they supposed to be simple, not like OP's?
I like the one in OP though, looks hip.
But wouldn't that shit get really cold in the winter and hot during the summer?

>>40007
Generally you insulate them, as with any building materials. As far as I know they are fine with insulation, and if you don't have to worry about sub-zero temperatures then you can get away with just white painted to keep off the heat.

The huge windows in OP's make an intersting challenge, but if you consider how the house is aligned (which way is north?) and what the climate is like there. If they were double/triple glazed or there was a heater in there, or you just didn't use that room when the weather was wrong then it would be fine. Also if you build it to take advantage of winter sun + summer shade, etc. Many factors to consider.

I think if done in a classy way like OP and not like in a hobo trashy way that would be an awesome way to live.
Unfortunately I am not loaded and I need a garage to work on my car...

So make a garage out of a shipping container and slap it on there. Shipping container homes are totally modular. That's one of the best parts.

It doesn't take a lot of money to build a house from containers, that's the original point of using containers. As for your car - you do know cars are shipped in these things, right?

Protip: After the frustrations of trying to get one built, you are just going to get over the novelty of having a house like that real quick.

I want breathing room.
And regardless, I doubt I am going to find a lot large enough to do this.

With the exception of the bedrooms and the kitchen that would be huge open living area. the reasons for such a huge place are as follows.
Kitchen: I'm a pro chef and there will be a professional range in this kitchen as well as a deep freeze and a GIANT fridge. there will also need to be room for a cheese cave, wine beer and cider storage. and an area to brew.

Dining room and living room: These will need to be large because we have a huge family and love to entertain. A table that seats 15 will go in here.

Bedrooms: I guess I should have been a bit more clear about this. Only 2-3 of these will serve as bedrooms. at least one will be a library. One will serve as a bedroom for my girlfriend and I and the others will be spares for when people stay over and possibly a childs bedroom one day.

total living space: 2304 sq ft
inner open living area: 1024 sq ft

so the inner area is about the size of my entire apartment right now

Sounds amazing. I hope you can build this!

You should give it a giant skylight over the whole area (hell, if you do that you could even grow plants indoors.)
You can also stack more containers on top of the outer ring if you do end up needing more rooms.
