Has anyone every tried making their own shoes? It's something I would be interested in doing. Where should I start?

This is what got me into leatherworking.

It also got me to realize that steel soles aren't a great idea.

how about hinged steel? that way they still flex int he right places as you walk, yet you can step on just about anything without harm.

That was one thing I hated about steel shank work boots. It was like walking on boards. Even actual geta and ashida geta aren't that bad because of the angles involved, but normal shoe styles need that flex with the step.

They rusted from the inside out, actually. Also, scratched the fuck out of flooring.

I switched to something similar to jika-tabi after that, since dexterity was much more useful than impact resistance in the scenarios I was wearing them in. Never wore anything else.

Use stainless steel. As for flooring, I assumed the metal was inside the sole and not actually on the bottom touching what you walked on. I bet it was slick as hell on concrete and other hard surfaces. I know metal hobnails and metal cleats terrible on that stuff.

So do you know any good resources I can use to begin? Any good books or projects I can try?

I'm sure it's easy to find something on how to make opinci (glorious peasant shoe of romania) or moccasins. Can't help with specifics aside from braintan.com if you want to make the leather for your shoes.
