Go to Germany for a couple of months and do a full immersion. Basic German isn't terribly difficult for native English speakers.

I'm planning to head there but wanted to pick up basics of the language. Looking for suggestions on that...

Errrh, might be a stupid advice but have you ever tried to learn German the way Germans learn English? by TV/ Series?

For example just download a comic series (e.g. South Park Season 14, english and german dubbed). The talking is pretty easy and understandable and you can easily follow the story and you should get a general idea of what the german version is getting across.

lolwut

if that was the case then everybody who watches anime would be speaking fluent japanese

German here, most Germans learn English in school and then refine it through media consumption, mostly music. TV not so much unless they bother to download things in English because regular TV airs absolutely EVERYTHING dubbed in German.

That's not a very good analogy. It's easier to learn different languages with the same root this way because you will naturally pick up on the similarities between them, obscure grammar rules aside. Japanese and English share no common ancestry, and there are no similarities apart from a handful of "loan words."

>> No.300638

I've found Rosetta Stone to be dubious at best. There's literature out there that shows that it doesn't really help with fluency in the language of choice. It also teaches by the same logic of X->English dictionary. You don't get the same feel for the language rules and everything. It won't go out of its way to teach, say, the difference between IR and AR verbs in Spanish. It's just rote memorization.

Listen to Rammstein.

Use a website called duolingo. It's free and you can practice speaking too if you have a webcam.

Watch German programming, like sitcoms.

Learning language through situational comedy will occur without you even knowing it. I can say that this works, whether you like it or not - if you are English, you've had your fill of shit TV, and shit TV is the same everywhere, and therefore this works. You cannot argue with that logic.

Watch 1 half hour show a day. Browse for something that isn't wickedly fast paced in terms of conversation, and you will be picking things up here and there before you.. know it.

I just want to correct you here, your whole post is correct, except for the word 'handful'. Japanese is fucking full of loan words.

Watch old war films op.
I'm glad I did, as I know now when germans are going to flank me, want me to surrender, want me to do things quickly and want me to get out

I started trying for a month or so before I gave up because it was useless for me.
I started listening to Michel Thomas audiobooks, they were quite good.

I fucking hate this advice. It's like it'd be fine to just drop everything and move to Germany. Don't worry about job/education/life. Just fucking move to Germany, so simple!

Generally good advice, but unfortunately, this picture says it all. German dub opens up a totally new level of horrendously disgustingly bad, that coming from a German.
If you really want to know, just google the German dub for Naruto, especially the episodes <50. It's the worst abomination I have ever witnessed. Not that I like the show, but I feel a little bit sorry for it ;_;

How I learned most of my English was actually by watching English dubbed Anime, then switching to subs and generally hanging out in the internet.
So, also read some German sites that look interesting to you. I can't recommend any except of Wikipedia because I generally don't visit German sites, though.

evade german dubbed anime like the plague, 95% of the german anime fans were scarred by them for live and use english subs ever since

Haven't watched NGE at all, but the stuff that is normally on TV sucks. Oh, and maybe there are some series late in the night that may have better dubs, but I don't watch TV anymore, so I am not up to date with the current situation.

You really should. Watching NGE is mandatory if you like anime. Liking NGE is optional

I started learning German with rosetta stone, I found it really easy, haven't learnt any more in ages due to lack of time.
