It looks like we don't actually have one up for once, so it's that time again.
/diy/ superhero thread!
Utility Belts, armor, diy criminology and so on.

I'm working on a theoretical application of vulcanized rubber and shear thickening fluid to make semi-hard plates that should be able to take small arms fire. What're you guys working on?

I use to work for an armory that created a body armor called "dragon scale" that would be very easy to duplicate if you really tried.

Although the carbon would be hard to get a hold of the ceramic plates probably wouldnt be.

Shouldn't we have pasta of previous threads by now? Might avoid concept reruns.
So far I'm counting good (IE: realistic) discussions/threads on:
Utility belt
Utility gauntlets (with or without offensive capability)
Multi environment helmet (night vision, HUD, air filter, snorkel, communications, etc)
Armor suits with or without powered exoskeleton
Power boots (both jumping/landing and running)
Wearable computers w/full sensor package
Auto ascending grapnel guns
Remote drones
Auto turrets
Armored cars
Bunkers
Off the grid stand alone support networks

Now all we need are some super criminals/ villans controlling large armies of mind washed henchmen, conquering and destroying the earth. Enslaving good citizens through fear and intimidation. Wait this is /diy/ save that crap for /pol/ right?... LOL

I'm working on a Utility Belt, an autoascender like the Atlas, a wrist pc, and a reusable parachute. All the information is theoretical at this point, but users are building and testing the ideas.

This was me, BTW.

My Utility Belt design is featured at the site I linked before - made some changes since the last Utility Belt thread. Medic pouch is still under construction, though, and I have a trained first responder assisting with the reconstruction - so the effectiveness of the pouch should sky-rocket.

I'm real interested in this but would there be a way to hide the belt (without wearing a huge coat 24/7)? Basically I wouldn't want everyone asking me what it's for because if I told them the truth they'd probably say i'm a nerd, superhero wannabe etc (well I am, but that's besides the point)

Also about the raspberry pi, how exactly do you guys plan on powering that? I heard 4 aa batteries don't last too long.

>> No.285731

>>285723
it depends on the type of batteries, but my problem with 4xAA is size and weight. I'm going to try my luck with various lithium batteries, like for iPod or maybe a cell phone battery. if need be, i'll use something more powerful than necessary and use some resistors to dumb the volts or amps down.

As far as concealing the belt - I think I remember you from my previous threads - you can try wearing a backpack as the pouches in the back may look like they belong to the bag and not your belt (the pouches on the back, anyway). Other than that you can try wearing baggy clothes and a long-bottom shirt to conceal the pouches. Personally, i'm keeping mine in my trunk. This question could use a better answer - does anyone else have any ideas?

On the plus side, I always have my phone, so i'm pretty much garanteed to reply within 15 minutes (unless i'm sleeping).

Thanks for the praise, btw - I don't get that too often concerning this project. Speaking of, pic related - those were the old pouches I ordered that were deemed 'too big'. As you can see, they pose mobility issues as bending your leg would squish some of those pouches...(continued)

The cord that will be used should be thick enough for human hands to grasp and climb. Otherwise, you can use acsender lanyards, an autoacsender (personal winch), or if you have time to set it up, rope ladders with pullstring access. Does that answer your grappling question or did I misunderstand?

That's partially what the monocular is for in the detective pouch - to aid in visual verification of a good hook. For situations where you are unable to see the hook's target at all (obstruction of vision), i'd pull it tight to make sure it's latched to SOMETHING, then climb a foot in the air and really tug hard on it a few times, then start climbing. There really is no surefire way to ensure you'll grasp something sturdy - but part of vigilanteism is balls. You're already putting your life on the line. There are going to be risks involved that could cost you some very bad pain or your life - seems like this is one of them.

>> No.285778

>>285776
yes okay that helps thanks a bunch.

while you're here I may as well bring up the problem of vehicles

surely most vigilante acts are considered illegal whether they be moral or not, surely you could only use a vehicle when out of suit (and out of suit) but what if they managed to get your plates, obviously you'd need fake ones (and multiple vehicles)

the thing about faked plates (i'd imagine) is that if a cop were to pull you over you'd obviously get prosecuted, or would you do something like 007 such that when you're out of sight you change the plates back to a legally owned plate.

sorry if this is a far-fetched i'm trying to keep it real as possible, for me personally this is years of practice and knowledge away.

I'd agree that vehicles are largely a problem - but i'd suggest something off-road capable. As far as ID and/or plates, you COULD rig it with a pull-wire or remotely via electronics, either way i'd suggest a flip-panel that you secure two plates to - one legit, one a decoy, and just flip them when you're out of sight. Obviously the primary goal would be not to get caught, but realistically there's a huge possibility you'll have a run-in with police. You could also rig oil-slicks or caltrops to deploy via push-button or pull-cord, but i'd assume you wouldn't want to hurt anyone but the original criminal(s) you were persuing. There are many more issues with vehicles though - heat signiature, sound, lights...just a bigger target such as a vehicle is a higher profile, so you probably WILL be noticed in any vehicle.

Just a small note.

NO amount of body armor will ever protect you from high caliber rounds. Not going to happen, forget Iron man and live in a real world with physics. So instead, try making a suit that doesn't stop bullets but helps your mobility and spacial awareness. Also think of good padding to minimize blunt force trauma from falls and what not.

In fact a thin Kevlar vest over a padded armor, will help tremendously. It will help against some grazes and maybe stop one 9mm which can save your life.

To boost mobility, take "performance enchantment" substances [garden variety of combination of stimulants] and train train train.

Most common arms you find on the street are .22, 9mm, .45, .357, 12g, and 410. Occasionally 30-30 or 30-06. Your basic police issue soft armor will stop all of this up to the rifle rounds, where hard plates would protect from that.

Agreed, armor won't help much for high caliber rounds but that's not something you'd face very often if ever. The bigger, heavier rounds will break ribs though, so that's something to consider.

It has been my personal experience that the deer rifles I and my friends use can't be stopped by plates or less than 3-4 plates thick that is. Some of these rifles are a bit scary. Most are loaded with brush ammo because this area is extremely thick with under brush. So, they tend to punch small holes instead of expanding a lot. I'm sure the same rifles loaded with more expanding ammo could be stopped easily with just one plate since they'd splatter against it.

My 30-30cal with the FMJ ammo I use for brush penetrates up to 1/2 steel plate at about 25 yards. In deer it punches a little hole for entry and exit so you need to be pretty exacting or the deer will run forever and die on someone else's property.

Those two hollywood robber nutjobs made their own suit of body armor. it was stronger than kevlar and could take shotgun blasts and stuff.

I forgot the name of the material they used though. But they simply sewed it into a bodysuit and then wore vests filled with steel plates over their vitals. Dozens of cops couldn't hurt them with nearly 20mins of continuous handgun and shotgun fire.

I'm pretty sure it would stand up against some junkie getting one off on you.

I'm working on the idea of using casting silicone. The type that you can cast lead in then stretch it off after cooling and reuse. There are some pretty tough materials out there in the special effects/ industrial art market.
Seems reasonable to think powdered silica (or other material) can be suspended in 900 degree proof silicone for a nice STF sheet.
(pretty sure this is how D3O is made. D3O for the buyfags out there! some good youtube footage of tests though)

Methinks a vibrating table or a centrifuge will be needed for truly functional armor panels.
My theory: By thinning out the rubber/powder mix and evenly coating cloth. Then vibrating it on a table will "settle" the powder in suspension. Different frequencies should "settle" it in different densities. The different densities will solidify at different rates. By layering these layers into a single laminate it seams legit to think the flexible pads with have there own "hard backing".

What are you, 12?

>> No.288902

For highly effective armor I imagine hard plates on any part of the body that doesn't move. A few layers of STF+cloth for anything that flexes.
Layered (armadillo like) articulation FTW. Kinda like pic related gives a nice classical gothic style maybe. Big hoody over the whole thing (reversible contrasting colors for a ninja quick change). Wicking fabric undergarments, 5 volt laptop fan built into partial hard shell back pack/shoulder pads to suck heat out of suit. Same fans hidden under steel toes of the boots. Need more core control liquid cool your jock strap/codpiece (no foolies think about it).
Then "patrol" on a bike. Write off armor as protective gear. Wear a helmet. Not look like a goof.
I really think realistic batman like actions could benefit with the use of bicycles and nondescript vans for getaways/equipment stashes and drop offs.
