its pretty small at 8' diameter at the eaves, 10' at the base. it has this medieval style hub frame, and the walls are all toggled on so i can drop them

i've been going back and forth on treating it. its just cotton 10 oz, and the webbing is polyester so the skin wil shrink taught while the webbing holds the shape. the pitch is steep so I might not need treatment, but I haven't been in it in a storm so I guess I will just wait and see

and some sources to guide you through building this are
greydragon.org
dragonwing.biz
if there are dead links you can put them in an internet archive and they will load

I was an assistant making them for a while. Fun job. Back then the electrical conduit we built them out of was so cheap it was considered disposable. Now the stuff is priced like it's made of gold. Protip, if you're gonna start a tent company remember to bring bug spray when you go to install them. People love having big events in mosquito swamps for some reason.

That's pretty cool. Do you ever do SCA events? It's the main place that I've seen these types of homemade tents before

How much to set one up in the middle of west virginia?

I used too, but these days its way too gay in my area. There's only so many rainbow vikings before its a fantasy larp. The online SCA resources are a treasure trove, though

I paid about $350 for materials including the stakes, a mid pole brace so I can break it down to fit into a vehicle, hemp rope, and the tent itself, but I overbuilt it. I got the canvas for free (25 yards to build this size), but I was worried about stretch/shrink over time so I spent just as much as the canvas would have been on the polyester webbing, which I applied inside and out. I think i could have skipped the inside with no problem. All the tension runs on these polyester strips which are very strong and very low stretch. You could just as easily get a cotton/polyester blend canvas which would solve the stretch/shrink problem and skip the webbing completely, or sew something purely decorative like a bedsheet over the seams instead. I have seen 12 oz cotton/poly canvas as low as $3/yard recently, so you could get the price down below $250 if you really searched for deals and simplified it like used a single piece pole instead of a 2 piece, walls attached to roof instead of removable, stake loops made of tent material instead of stainless d-rings, cheaper rope. A commercial tent like this is probably $1200+

I made this big blue tent late last year to park my motorcycle under
It's basically a coil tarp stretched over a pvc frame. It does the needful but it definitely isn't as fancy as your canvas tent

I can't decide whether this is a clever use of language or pure retardation.

saw a video of a dude who built a yurt on top of his truck. If my life really falls apart that'll likely be my go to.

Years ago when I was in college I always wanted to put a teepee in the backyard of the row home my friends and I lived in. My plan was that we could go into it to smoke pot and call it “the getting high teepee”. I looked into doing it but it seemed hard so I gave up. You should make a “the getting high teepee” because it seems like you’re pretty good at this

Beautiful, reminds me of those medieval style tents.

How is that central plate attached?

it just slides down the pole and rests on a little perch on that metal sleeve

could you also use a through peg/dowel, it doesn't look to support much load?

yeah i think so, or with a lot of work you could make a ledge in a single piece pole with the top half a bit thinner. Also here is the first tent I made, just from dropcloths made into a 5/8's circle

just a pole and some ropes, although I have since added loops at the bottom of the canvas to be staked down directly, no more need for ropes
