Anyone on /diy/ built their own dog house before? I'll be getting a decent sized Golden Retriever or German Shepherd soon, and plan on building a house for it. Any recommendations on what type of wood to use, sizing, things like that?

Landscape timber from your local lumber yard. Basically make a log cabin.

Basically only place to go now is home Depot/Lowes and buy their expensive as fuck wood.

Home Depot has landscaping timber. Shits fairly cheap. It even goes on sale sometimes. It was on sale for like 2$/piece over the 4th. You don't need that much.

Alright, it's been a while since I've bought from there, so my price knowledge is probably off.

Where are you?

Landscape timbers are the most worry free approach, as warping and cracking won't really be a concern until the dog is dead/nearly dead, and the dog can't easily tear it apart.

What about this.

Former lumber yard salesman here. IMO make the interior frame and base with pressure treated #2 2x4s then make siding with common cedar siding.

I'd suggest using a pallet as the base and building a stick frame house. Depending on where you live, you could insulate the walls and floor.

Pic shows contemporary dog house.

I wouldn't use pressure treated wood. Go with something like cedar.

Huh.
A while ago I had an idea I could try to make money by selling dog houses.
They are incredibly expensive here, in Slovakia.
And damn easy to make too.
I don't think there is anything made out of wood that could be so profitable.

I spent $250 making my dog a kick ass dog house complete with solar powered fan to vent out hot air in the summer and the fucker won't even go inside it unless I throw food in there. It's like 25 sq. ft. or so, complete with a little front porch.

I used the scraps from when my parent's did their roof and siding last year and even matched the roof angle and all that. I painted little house numbers and added a "B" as if it were an apartment or something.

I was on the phone with my dad and apparently he has been killing squirrels and leaving their corpses in there, so at least he found a use for it.

Learn how to dog. They aren't people, don't think like people, and do not like the same smells as people. This is a creature that uses its tongue for toilet paper and will happily roll in a rotten bear carcass. Do you really think it would like the whole new house smell?

To dog there is strange box that smells weird as fuck and alpha dad is insistent that dog is in it which is weird since other boxes are bad for dog and the alpha dad barks at dog for going in them plus this cave makes spooky noise when the hot part of the day is hot. Dog is curious though since its good cave and alpha dad is alpha but the cave smells absolutely fucking terrible. Dog will decorate cave box with good smells and maybe poop in a corner.

If it smells like dog(or putrid filth), dog will lay in it. If it smells like a brand new condo yuppies will sleep in it. Learn to dog.

pets often like to lay directly on the ground because it's cooler

the earth holds some of the cool of the night into the day

that's why they dig little spots to lay in under shady bushes

when you build an insulated doghouse, the floor isn't cooling them
