hey there /diy/, new poster here

I've been asked to build a pair of gloves that, when one snaps the fingers, ignites a lighter. I know my method already, but am at a loss for the exact materials I should use. the fuel will be mounted on the wrist with a tube going out to the thumb with a nozzle. the middle finger and thumb will need to create a spark, so I was thinking a simple fling&steel deal. will be either butane or propane fuelled.

TL;DR
I need to know what parts to get to build glove-mounted lighters that light with a finger-snap

>> No.276526

...you realize the likelyhood of someone catching fire from this is high, right?

Why not just some sort of flint/steel combo on the fingertips?

will be using leather gloves, safety is not an issue here. and he wants to create fire, not just spark.

Heh, I'm literally watching that right now on hulu.com as I type this. I'm waiting on a commercial to end so I'm browsing /diy/.

You'd need to make an awkward backward-snapping motion if you want to light it at the top of the thumb. You could remove the flint from a regular lighter and rig it near the nozzle of the tube.

"he" is going to be kicked out of whatever con "he" wears it to, as it would count as a weapon and go against almost 99.9% of most cons' policies.

You can try for a "realistic" cosplay all you want, but don't expect to get it in the door.

pic related, it's the cosplay the gloves are for

>>276532
it's not going to be worn to a con, it's for wearing to photo shoots and meets and such. he also just really wants flame gloves.

Use lighter components for it.

What about a piezo igniter? like out of one of the long handled charcoal lighter?

>> No.276695

OP You're overcomplicating this MUCH more than you need to. All this talk of tubes and flints + steel is fucking ridiculous.

http://www.amazon.com/BIC-Mini-Lighters-Assorted-Resistant/dp/B0018E94AE

Bic Mini Lighters are about the width of your thumb. You could simply insert it into the thumb of the glove, cut a small part of the tip off, and create a small leather heat protector to surround the metal piece. Through the small cut you could put the flint wheel, or even get one of the electronic ones so you could just press it through the glove.

You can also adjust the nozzle of the lighter in order to make the flame HUGE and sparky. Plus, the way you would half to hold it would have the added benefit of concealing your thumb a bit, making it look like the flame is coming from between your thumb and middle finger

you must use metal to make a tip that can expell gas, so it's gonna get really hot really fast. OP, as much as i hate to say this, it's impossible in the terms of a common /diy/no, just too much resources needed for they to become true. And that is assuming that you are not just a childish weaaboo, but a real /diy/no.

Any ways, I would recomend that sparkers (like the one on teh matches box) is dealt in the finger tips (sand paper may work) but good luck gettong them white. I would also recomend that fire would be thrown from the palm of the hand, and finally, gas stored in the body, AWAY FROM THE FLAMES, remembering to use non combustible, flexible pipeline.

Good luck and post what ever comes out of this. I'm intrested.

I really like this, but we want more fuel, and a way to make the flame HUGE

>> No.276761 [DELETED]

The bigger it is, the more likely you will have no control over it.

Photoshop was invented for a reason. Just go with a small flame and work from that.

This is a rad as hell idea and I love the character you are trying to emulate. My advice would be don't listen to people saying stuff about the safety of it, you gotta get this shit to light up as fantastic as possible. Don't be making no pussy gloves now. Good luck.

Allow me to be the voice of common sense:
If you're going to build a glove that lights fires.
Make sure it won't also get hot enough to burn your hand. You might not want to create this "huge fire" you keep talking about.

>> No.276835

Another option could be to create a small dust explosion with flour, but that seems like it could be difficult to control in terms of how much gets into the air and how far it spreads before being ignited. In any case, it would make sense to make a way to test the device without wearing it, and to make sure the coat is fire resistant as well. Also, hair can be very flammable, so make sure the arm is always stretched out like Roy's in the picture there and not put it near anyone else's head.

Do a quick google search for The Promethius(sp?) Device. It's a palm- mounted flamethrower meant to mimic the powers of Pyro from X-Men. Could be some good ideas in his designs - which should be available online for free.

>> No.276867

Another idea would be to use a switch that will close the circuit when the middle finger touches the tip of the thumb and then the base of the thumb. This can then trigger a spark igniter as well as the gas flow which can be positioned on any part of the glove.

spinning the flint wheel with it right on your thumb would be pretty hard, wouldn't it?
