Hey /diy/. Not sure if this is the place to ask, but I thought it would be the best start. Do any of you guys/gals know how to make a stencil for spray paint? I have a few designs I've pulled off Google, but I'm not sure where to start. Is it as simple as just printing off the design, and cutting a piece of cardboard, or is it more advanced? Any tips would be appreciative.

>> No.273958

Just as you said, after many times doing this i can recommend you.

Cardboard from a regular box, acetate, mylar or radiographies for multiple use stencil.

Cereal box carboard, or bristol board for a single use/more detailed piece.

>>273958
Should I print the design on just plain copy paper, or should I use something thicker? Also, after I actually get it printed, how do I go about transcribing the image to the cardboard? (I'm extremely knew to this, if you couldn't tell)

Once I get the know-how, and I get the skill down, I'll start making my own. That tutorial I found is pretty helpful.

If you are thinking about the type of stencils that Banksy uses then forget it, he uses extremely expensive processes to chieve the effects he gets and also he has developed the technique of the last decade or two

If it's simple stencils then why not draw them on paper and cut them out with scissors?

>> No.273976

>>273972
That'd work I guess, but wouldn't plain copy paper be kind of a one time use?

>> No.273978

Now that I get to looking at the Giant face, it's gonna be pretty tough to only cut out the black in some parts. Guess I'll just go to a different design.

Pizza boxes and cardboard are good for bigger or one time use stencils that are going to get soggy and wear out after a few sprays at best.

If you're looking to tag your best bet is to use vinyl folders that are semi-transparent (helps because you can print the image out, put it underneath, and cut it with an exacto knife)
If you're looking for a bigger multi use stencil you can either get a lot of vinyl or find some thick poster board and that'll work very good as well.

As for paint : if you're going to a hardware store etc to get it go with Rusto, some people use krylon but I find it to be flaky and thin and doesn't stick as good. Work on how far you hold the can and can control. Normally with the thicker capped rustos I aim for about 6-10 inches away depending on size of the stencil and the surface (remember too close and it'll run, too far and you won't cover it well)

If you can afford it / find it IronLak is the way to go. Also start simple with the stencils, then work your way up to free-handing and multi-layered stencils so you're not a toy any more.

>paint
Just make sure it sprays. Don't put it on to thick.
>stencil
Glue some folders/cereal box peices together, draw your stencil, cut with a hobby knife
>Go find Banksy's guide to stencils (google is your friend)
If you don't know who Banksy is, you shouldnt have a spray can in your hand.

>> No.274035

Also, Krylon started using a flat cap instead of a dot. Good for stencils, but if you want to make some better art than you will need to go with Rusto.

I'd definitaley suggest buying some Montana cans or something of the sort.

how about a two-tone?

32 pound weight laser-printer paper.

Just make yourself some bridges to the islands and fill them in post-spray, if you're not under pressure.

If you're out and about, and doing it on the fly, the bridges are acceptable to see, because at first glance, nobody is going to notice them.

I've been cutting stencils for about 8 years, and the easiest way to get started IMO is to print something off on normal computer paper and just cut that out with an exacto knife. computer paper isn't the strongest material but just be slightly careful and it'll suit almost all your needs. one thing i didnt see anyone say is that you want to use a light dusting of spray glue on the back of your stencil to prevent underspray. also, make sure your border is big enough to prevent overspray. that usually involves taping more paper around the edges of your stencil.

Mind you, this was a combination of cutting some negative space, and some positive space. His entire suit consisted of islands, so I opted to cut out the major details in positive space, the miniscule ones in negative space, and implied the hairline, instead of cutting the whole dealio.

Just be objective and approach it with some forethought.

Regular paper? Or something special?

I'm going to sound like an old faggot, but I can't stress how important protection is against breathing this in. t-shirts and cheap dust masks don't work, you need at least a half-face respirator.

Trust me, after painting for years with nothing but a t-shirt round my head, I've started to notice the effects of the aerosols on my brain.

It can fuck you up in any manner of ways concerning your brain, whether that's your memory or the nerve cells in your bladder (which turns out is pretty common). You don't want to be pissing yourself by the time you're thirty.

One tip I can give is that the plastic cover of a "Five Star Notebook" works awesomely and is easy to cut yet stiff enough to not rip. Also, it's all one layer, unlike cardboard when you cut through but there's still multiple thin layers blocking the spot that you cut out.

One thing about the way this guy did islands is that it doesn't look natural, since he made the islands at random points. it's better to make islands where there's some kind of junction in the image.
