Hello /diy/.

This is my first time posting on this board.
I want to take up metalworking as a hobby, mostly making knives but also for shaping scrap metal. So how would I go about building a forge? Preferably cheaply, but if quality becomes an issue I would be willing to spend a little extra. In addition, I have no actual experience
but have read thoroughly on the topic. All advice is welcome.

These knives would not be intended weapons, as rule #3 prohibits, but tools.

>> No.273510

Just don't mention knives, OP.

For a forge, get a hair dryer, dig a hole, and make a tunnel to the hole. Stick the hair dry in the tunnel so it'll blow into the hole. The tunnel needs to be angled and 100% lower than the hole your dug, otherwise, if you turn the hair dryer off it'll chimney back through the tunnel and catch the hair dryer on fire. Build a fire in the hole, add coal to it. Start heating up some metal.

BBQ grill charcoal briquettes will work, but terribly. They create too much ash and actually insulate heat away from the metal. They also burn up too quickly and cost an arm and a leg. Google how to make your own charcoal. Then you can use your charcoal as fuel for your forge.

>> No.273730

Some people will tell you to use hardwood charcoal, but softwood charcoal worked pretty well for me.

I made some out of some Douglas fir scraps I collected. The charcoal ash would generally be carried off by the air draft and would not collect in the hearth. It burns just as hot, but you consume a greater volume of charcoal.

why use a forge?
get some metal, use a grindstone to shape and sharpen it
polish it up, and stick a handle on it and then eat with it

>> No.274026

>>274012
Because part of the forging process involves imbuing the metal with the desired hardness, rigidity etc. Sure you can sharpen up just about any piece of metal but if it's too hard and untempered, it'll shatter and chip if dropped etc so not much use for every day cutlery.

Here we go.

I stripped the hair dryer down and removed the heating coils inside it. I then attached an AD/DC adapter to the motor. It works like a charm. you can use a dirt tunnel, but I decided to shove an old metal pipe in it and bury it. When of finally got some good hard coal instead of BBQ charcoal crap or the local soft coal, it got so hot that it melted the iron crucible I was using the melt aluminum in.

It works well for forging too. Since I was just testing it I didn't make anything except a mess when testing different temps and how the metal reacted. I need to get a block of tool steel and make my own anvil.

You should have see the anal pain that leaked out of the original thread it was posted in. I still have that knife. It still works really well. I use it for wire stripping, letter opening, and foam/plastic shaping since it is so thin.

or
http://zoellerforge.com/coffee.html

This is a coffee can forge. It will cost you less that 50 dollars to make and you can buy all of the materials from home depot. It is also multi-purpose; you can fire ceramics in this forge as well.

If you want to do this as a hobby, this is your best bet for a starting forge. A fire or stove work okay, but a coffee-can forge gets up to the right temperature consistently.

You will also need an anvil and tongs. You can use a piece of train rail mounted on a stump for an anvil, or just a big rock. Get some heavy-duty cast-iron tongs from Home Depot.

You can do this with a grinder and other tools. The method is called stock removal. You can heat treat the finished product yourself in a small forge,or use a commercial system. I have a place locally that does hardening for a variety of steel objects, just call around.

There is no special "magic" from forging something into shape. It's just two ways to get something. However, forging is a lot easier to fuck up. Most people don't think about it,but forging at too low of a heat can seriously mess up a blade, and forging too hot can literally burn your steel.

Whatever floats your boat. Most people use a combination of the two.

Neither of you are even approaching the realm of correct.

While stock removal is a perfectly valid form of tool making, you still require a heat-treatment process to get the required hardness in the steel.

And that is NOT part of the forging process. Forging is entirely about heating the steel and reshaping it, welding it, etc. The heat-treatment is entirely separate.

>> No.274415

>>274247
No, you really won't.

Go find the largest rock on your property, one you'd use as an anvil. Now take a large hammer, and begin pounding on it.

Notice how...
1) You won't have a perfectly flat surface to work on.
2) Bits and pieces chip off as they're impacted.

You can make an entire forge out of crap you can get for free. But you NEED a proper anvil. Whether it's a piece of RR rail or a proper horned anvil, doesn't matter. But a rock ain't gonna do the job.

>> No.274531

>>274415

Depends on the type of rock, and size. A several hundred pound rock would still be better than >>274324's 30 pound railroad anvil. You're wasting the large majority of your blow simply making that thing jump around.

The railroad anvil also isn't flat on top, either,it's curved. I like how they chopped off extra steel too. Making it look like a horn doesn't make it function like one.

>> No.274534

>>274531
No it isn't. No rock will work better than a piece of metal, even shitty metal. You don't have any experience with anvils, rocks, or anything else DIY related I'd imagine. No sir, that would be you. People that use stone or cement anvil are really stupid, very ignorant or extremely hard up for an anvil. I have used both stone and cement anvils and they are complete shit when compared to shitty cast metal anvils.

In case you didn't notice, that granite anvil is chipped all to shit. Not only that, but you can see how much the granite block has need to be reshaped and how much of it has been hammered away. Also, you can see chips of stone coming off, not flakes off the metal, though there are several of those too. Another thing, he's hammering away like hell and the metal is barely deforming, even at the level of heat it is at it should be deforming a lot faster than it is. That is because the stone does not have the mass a metal anvil has.
