Been doing some late night/early morning thinking and what I came up with was a remote control lawn tractor. Sounds pretty stupid but I still want to do it because I can and I've done pretty much everything else possible with a lawn tractor. From my basic understanding of how rc cars work I know I will need a servo for throttle, steering and shifting gears. I will also need two switches to trip solenoids, one for the starter and one for the shutoff wire coming from the coil. Other than that I know nothing. So help me out /diy/, What do I need?

i want it.

Eh, the thing was alright, got through snow with ease, ended up making a plywood enclosure for it and using it in paintball wars.

Get a few RC cars. Harvest their electronics. Apply those to solenoids to activate larger motors and solenoids to do the things you want done. Mount a camera on the mower too.

That thing is awesome. What knowledge did building it grant you? What can you pass on to one looking into making one?

Should have been more specific, I would like to know all the different components of a rc radio system, the transmitter, receiver, crystals and such.
>>270961
Here is how the track system works:
The wheels support the load of the vehicle, but the guidance system itself is done using a piece of u channel to prevent wear on the wheels (plus it helps keep the track from coming off alot better than using the wheels). The drive is transferred from the transaxle to cage & pinion sprocket (rods on drive wheel engage into the track guides). The tracks themselves are wood screwed onto conveyor with steel pads. so basically start studying snowmobile rear ends and get good with a welder.
I'm eventually going to make a new version off a zero-turn chassis so ill start a thread here when i do that

Great, I'll look into it.

I would get the guts from some cheap RC car, then rip the brain out (while remembering how it was connected to the motors), then get a few transistors and hook it all up to much beefier servos.

Actually, what I would've done is basically what you want to do, but I'd hook up some form of microcontroller or cheap little computer (maybe a raspi?), so I could make a robot.

How does a robotic lawn mower or snow plow sound?

Pretty cool, my main reason for doing this is so I can scare the shit out of a friend as a driver-less lawn tractor on steroids comes and tears up his back yard.

>> No.270972

>>270968
Now, if you could pull the whole robot thing off, while also attaching a big ass battery bank, and some electric chain saws, I could safely say that we'd get along pretty well.

Hey, I had a more off-pullable idea; how about attaching one or two of those lawn mowers you normally push around to it? If you attach it to the front, you could both mow the lawn, and scare the shit out of people by making it so you could angle them upwards 45-90°

Hey now, In general I 'aint a big fan of safety but that is just ridiculous. gnawing off a persons leg or foot because i couldn't see them isn't my personal idea of fun.

>>270974
Oh, I thought part of the plan was to make it abundantly clear to everyone that they should stay away. In a frightening way.

Anyway, I still think a double lawn mower setup is a pretty neat idea. You'd be able to cut the lawn like a boss.

I used to have a lot of sheep and horses, and I would've loved something like that to lug around large amounts of their food or equipment. How strong is it?

>> No.270977

>>270976
What? the halftrack? It was strong enough to hold 5 people and full paintball loadout, other than that i never did a true load test.

Anyone have a lawn tractor? can you please put a torque wrench to the steering wheel, I need to know how strong of a servo I need and I am out of town.

Hook up a camera onto it or kinect and have it autonomously guide itself.

Might need some gearing in order to derive enough strength or the right turn ratio. Alternatively just use motors instead of servos.

>> No.272190

I was going to do that anyway but not have it go full autonomous because after i scare the shit out my neighbors i think it would be re-purposed to come get me if i broke down on a trail.

somebody actually already makes roomba-like automated lawn mower bots. uses burred wire as its boundary, returns to its charging station when done and all that. Cant remember the name but they were expensive as fuck

Look at the tracks, I made this shit with the bargin bin at a hardware store.

As for the rest of the halftrack questions it is a retired design, I will try a track system again someday but only when i get a good Zero turn frame.
