I feel really bad right now about my trade. I'm a 3rd year electrician and I can't get ahead. I see people with less experience than me that get way more responsibilities and attention from the older guys. I always keep a good attitude and listen really well. I feel like I'm pretty good even though I fuck up sometimes. It feels hopeless and everyone makes me feel worse about my skills, especially the general foreman. He talks shit about me to everyone and every time I come on a job I already have a reputation because he calls me slow and unenthusiastic. I am not slow, or at least I don't think so, I keep pace with the other guys. I also have no idea what he means when he says I enthusiastic. I follow all orders, ask tons of questions, and I'm willing ing to try anything. Idk. I'm just super depressed about it and even though I feel like I'm improving I just get sent places to rough or trim plugs and lights, I never get any real cool responsibilities. Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong here

You either have a jackass boss and/or you’re about to become a self-aware adult who realizes you’re not as special and good at everything as your mom told you. Also nepotism is real, but normally the boss overlooks you rather than talks shit to you if that were the case.

And if you pissed off that boss with a lot of mistakes early on, sometimes there’s nothing you can do to prove that you’re more competent now. Or you might not be competent, but at least he hasn’t shitcanned you.

Are you gay, trappy, weaboo or 'tistic? Could just be a culture conflict. Or the competence thing as mentioned above. Try a different shop.

He can probably sense you are depressed about it and is growing more sure you are unenthusiastic. Too many questions can also be a bad sign. Just try to keep learning, have some fun and leave if possible.

There's also something to strategic laziness where you can fail upward. There were some posts about getting too fat to do crawlspace work to get cushier jobs. Don't do this particular thing but it might apply, especially if you move to a new crowd first.

You probably don't have much energy nor do you have ambition.
Like you said, you just sit around and take orders.
You have no gumption.
No drive.
Jump in and get your hands dirty.

Sounds like you're a poor fit with that company. You probably aren't learning enough to progress.
If you're union, push for a transfer to another company and see how the new company treats you.
If non union, brush up your resume. Get a different employer before you're a fourth year performing like a shitty third year.
Either way, this is your learning time. Not later. Now. Let others fuck this up for you and you'll just be that one guy they call when they need anything with a pulse. And first laid off, too.

You're getting held back by the company. You're not going to become the best that you can be in an environment where people call you shit and give you the same easy work. You're missing out on experience, go work for someone else.

I'm an electrical engineer and went through a similar thing. Never given any better responsibilities, chief engineer talked shit about me saying I wasn't a real engineer, never any training or mentorship etc etc.
Made me doubt my abilities until I moved jobs. I'm at a much better company and people think I'm great at what I do.
