2679585 No.2679585 [Reply] [Original]

I would like to install an antenna so I could still have something to watch if our internet was to go out. Thinking of putting it in the attic possibly.

I’d appreciate it if you told me anything I need to know before I try this.

Coaxial antenna carries a surge very well. In addition to the ground, run the cable through a surge protector or 2 before it gets to a tv, reciever etc There's passive in line ones that don't look much different from your standard passive splitter, or the probably currently unused one on half of any of the larger surge protectors you may own. Don't let a lightning strike blow your shit up.

I do recommend putting it in the attic to prevent lightning strikes and to keep birds/storms from breaking it, especially if you get a new chinkshit one.
You don't need some meme "digital" antenna, the old style VHF/UHF combo antenna will do.
You may need an amplifier if you're making a very long coax run, in which case you'll also need a power outlet where the antenna is mounted. Consider a light bulb socket to outlet converter if nothing else is available.
If you live close to the transmitter towers, mounting a pair of rabbit ears horizontally in the attic will get you a bunch of channels, and save you from having to buy a bigger antenna. If you're REALLY cheap, some old coat hangers will probably do just as well. This is /diy/ after all.

Jesus christ, you must really love unskippable ads and the VHS filter. A DVD collection is a better alternative at this point.

Better idea. Setup a sshfs/samba server and pirate a bunch of shows. I have 80+ complete shows and 135+ movies on mine. The internet could be out for days and we would be fine.

As an added bonus, you can put other things on your server, too. I have almost 2TB of games alone. There's also digital books, comics, family pictures, various programs, and whatever else we want to put on there.

Instead of every person in the house having their own private book, music, movie, TV show, etc collections, spread across many different devices, we have consolidated them on to one that is accessible from any 'dummy terminal' in the house (their devices are not really dummy terminals but you get the idea).

So if you want to setup a media center in the living room, you don't need to transfer files, buy an array of hard drives, or anything like that. You just need a basic device/computer with enough storage to hold the OS, a way to plug it into the TV, and you're ready to start watching stuff in VLC, MPV, or whatever you prefer.

Or you can keep watching mattress warehouse ads with the horror movie static filter on. It's up to you.

If it's outside, run a copper wire from the antenna lightening arrestor to your existing building ground rod. It's bare wire, not rocket science. Any wire would work, of decent capacity.

If it's indoors, like inside an attic, how is that likely to be struck?

Do you actually have broadcast television near you? Any large mountains or valleys in the way?
Getting it to an attic can help, but if there's nothing actually making it to your house, you'll have a shit time of it. When TV was pure analog, the video would be fuzzy but still useful. Now, if you don't have at least decent reception, it's a blocky unuseable signal, or one that cuts out every other second.
Start by looking up where the towers are for the stations near you. If they're within 10 miles, or you live on a mountain, you might have something. Otherwise, it's a waste of time and money.

Download an app called antenna point. All it does is find your location and determine the location and direction of the closest TV broadcast antennas.

If they are 45 miles or more away, I would not recommend an attic installation. The signal would be too weak.

Nigga, you already have something that can get you local news and weather. You're using it right now.

But just to go one step further:

Even if your phone is dead, even if there has been no electricity for days, even if there has been no sunlight for days, you STILL won't miss your local news or weather, and it has other uses as well.

Older style antennas only work if a newer TV has a built in digital converter right?
Otherwise you have to buy the digital converter?

Are older style antennas better than the new digital antennas

>> No.2684294

>>2684290
Yes, most new tvs have them. iirc it was around 2007 when they realized OTA wasn't going anywhere and just started producing them with the capability. As far as quality, there were plenty of old antennas that were absolute dogshit. They just didn't last the test of time so you don't see the bad ones as much now.

>Older style antennas only work if a newer TV has a built in digital converter right?
Kind of a separate issue from the antenna itself, but yes, you need an ATSC receiver to pick up and decode ATSC broadcasts. Any TV made since around the time of the digital transition must have such a receiver built in. If you're using an analog-only TV, a converter box will be needed.
>Are older style antennas better than the new digital antennas
I think "digital antennas" came about during the transition partly to take advantage of consumer confusion, and partly because many stations were broadcasting analog on their original VHF channels, while at the same time broadcasting in digital on UHF. So-called "digital antennas" are mostly designed for UHF for this reason, and also because they're smaller and cheaper to produce that way. However, after the analog shutdown, many stations switched back to their original VHF frequencies, so a UHF-only antenna would perform worse than a combo antenna in that case.
