How profitable is gold refining and selling your own bars?

As part of a hobby it can make you some coin.

As a primary source of income you'll be priced out by economies of scale.

I've got a half gallon canister of foils and tabs from printer cartridges from work. Not sure how much gold is actually in them but I didn't see any sense in just throwing them away

Someone told me the foils are 1/17 gold by weight

Measure how long it would take to extract and melt 10g of gold out of those.
Then measure how many hours of work you spend on that.
Calculate your hourly wage from this kind of work

My bet is that you wont be able to even get a minimal wage rate out of this. Otherwise there would already be businesses doing this

>> No.2624092

>>2624091
There *are* already businesses extracting gold from e-waste but on a huge scale.

I've tried heating them and crumbling them. That seems to work pretty well for the foils. The tabs are more annoying

I suspect if they were allowed to use mercury on an industrial scale, it would cut costs 75% at least. Mercury rapidly amalgamates with gold and can then be burned off

100 cartridges would be about .1 grams of gold. So, you'd need 1,000 catridges to produce one gram. One gram of gold is worth roughly $63 right now. Once you factor in the time and materials to extract the gold you will have lost money.

The cartridges are actually worth more whole. Sell them on eBay.

You'd need to scrap large quantities of junk electronics to make it worthwhile. If you're just goofing around then go for it and save your bars. You could actually make decent money scrapping all kinds of metal if you take the time to sort it all properly so you get the maximum value for it. Right now is a great time to do it because scrap prices are ridiculously high right now.

>> No.2624098

Better recycle copper
Much easier to extract in large quantities, much easier to sell
Or if you are a real G you can try stealing any big electronic garbage or copper wires, usually hospitals have big electronic devices with a lot of copper inside so look for this kind of stuff

Would niggers steal it?
No nigger is running around stealing printer cartridges for the gold. Hell, they aren't even stealing the printers.
Copper? They'll pull that shit straight outta the walls.

if you buy 300 dollars of scrap, jewelry gold and melt it down/refine/cast it and end up with like a 70 gram gold bar. You'll have made 4k.

They are not real.
You are not buying 200g of scrap gold for $300.

OP is too lazy to look it up himself so he decided to waste space posting his dumb fucking question here when he could have posted it in the /SQTDDTOT/ thread.
The others here indulge him with answers either to show off what they know or to kill time in-between doses of their autism meds.

in terms of quality, it's all gold. Not pure of course, but it's gold. I bring a dice-sized magnet with me and check out all of them and about 95% of them don't stick.

>> No.2624164

>>2624152
Wow, your math is astonishing.

To yield a 70g bar of pure gold you would need to melt down about 94 grams of junk jewelry (assuming the jewelry is all 18k which is unlikely). 94g of junk 18k gold jewelry has a melt value of about $4373, so I doubt you'll find anyone dumb enough to sell it to you for $300 unless its stolen.

In other words go fuck yourself.

Nightmare. I was in the gold business for years. You need to assay every batch you refine. Then you have to find someone to purchase. Not easy. The purity is always a big issue. If you have a 10 oz bar you'll be lucky to net out 5 oz.

No one will buy your gold because your not a jew. They never mention that with all these 'buy real gold/silver for your Ira account' schemes

No.one wants to buy your shit. You'll see the spot price of gold and go 'Yes this is a good time to sell

Then you'll take it down to the friendly gold merchant and it will disappear behind the counter and he'll say oh see yes the spot price hmm yes but I'm taking such a big risk with you see and my operating expenses. Surely thw best I can do is $1000. Oh you'd like you're $600 of gold back certainly. Let me turn around here and look for that $500 coin you gave me....

>How profitable is gold refining and selling your own bars?
It depends how much you buy your gold for.
I have a "we buy gold" business on the side and offer between 60-80% melt value. I considered refining it myself, but after breaking down all the costs it is much more cost effective to outsource the refining to a professional. My refiner charges me 1% of melt value and issues me a notarized lab assay report along with my bar.
