Hey /diy/ i want to ride my bike to the gym, but i can't find my bikelock. I have rope, chain, power tools, and nails . Could you tell me how to make an improvised lock(or a good knot) so no dumbasstalented /diy/ersteals my bike?
you can ask me if i have other materials because i just might

Thick chain plus a thick padlock. That is your best bet. A rope is not a good idea at all.

Put an old sock on your hand, make a open fist and wrap in duct tape. Use a clip to attach chain around bike, use duct tape "rain guard" over clip. Looks like a lock under a cover, you have to open the pocket to see the clip, thief glances and strolls on looking for easy money. Do this all the time.

Take your bike into the gym with you, explain you don't have a lock right now, they'll let you stash it inside the building.

Keep in mind that security chain is case-hardened, where normal chain is tempered soft. Case-hardening the security chain makes it a lot more difficult to cut, and tempering the load-bearing chain soft greatly helps it resist snapping when shock-loaded.

I have seen people on bicycling forums ask where to buy security chain by-the-foot and nobody has ever found anywhere that is realistic. The easiest way is to just order some of the chain from Kryptonite or Abus online.

Two things I do know that hardened chain is used for is crane rigging and the chains on car frame-straightening machines.
The prices of crane-rigging chain makes the ~$24-per-foot Kryptonite chain look ridiculously economical.
I've never found anywhere to buy frame-straightener chain, but a local shop that does this might get you some--they probably have a source for extra parts.

I like to modify and personalize my bikes to the point no one would dream of stealing them. But that only works if your as strange as me, most folks want there things to look theft worthy. I'm a big fan of fake rust (latex and rust flakes) and cosmetic "structural duct tape", and homemade leather hand wraps. I like to use mismatch parts from previous bikes to add to the effect. Good parts but looks road warrior ugly. Form is the function.
