2530084 No.2530084 [Reply] [Original]

My water pipes have been frozen for a few days now. Hot water is fucked, but we still have cold water for some reason.
Our toilet however won't flush, because cold. Major problem. We can heat water to clean and bathe, but the fucking toilet refuses to flush. The pipes havent burst, they're just frozen.

How do I get this damn thing to flush again? How do I thaw the pipes?
I'm so desperate that even the shittiest of ideas help.

Pay your fucking gas bill and turn the heat back on. In the meantime you're gonna have to shit in the shower and waffle stomp it down the drain.

If it helps, I live in a trailor camper, that's got no insulation whatsoever. The only reason we havent frozen ti death is vecause of the 3 space heaters we have running 24/7.
I was thinking of dumping boiling water down the toilet, but I'm worried that would fuck the pipes.

I would love more than nothing right now than to drop a fat shit and take a hot shower.

We don't have gas, just water and electric.

Ah, also, if it helps, most of our pipes are pvc. Some are still copper, but most are plastic.

>dumping boiling water down the toilet
Will not work. There's just not enough heat in a pot of boiling water to accomplish this.
But you could try salt. Like a *lot* of salt. As much salt as will dissolve in that pot of boiling water. That ought to lower the freezing point to the point where you might have a chance.
But really, just do like the Indians do and shit outside. It'll freeze and won't smell until the temps rise.

If you're in a camper, where does the toilet flush to? Is it a tank under your camper? Is it hooked up to a septic tank?

Also, a toilet gets new water from pipes and flushes into a drain. Is water source frozen or the drain frozen? If you have a septic, it's very unlikely the latter.

If the entire system is localized to your camper, go to Home Depot and buy an electric heat gun, preferably battery-operated. Then get on your hands and knees and modestly heat the waterworks. Do this every hour until weather improves. Don't overheat, you might loosen solder or gaskets. Just enough to warm things to a point that can melt ice, which needn't be very hot at all.

>> No.2530147

>>2530131
>>2530084

If you dissolve salt in boiling water it will increase the boiling temp. The more salt you add, the higher it will go. Remember that OP but you may have already tried that.

Is it not flushing due to something in the tank or bowl frozen? If water is still going to the drain you could still use it and then dump a bucket of water to manually flush it until you get the problem fix or thawed.

Bad bad idea for PVC pipes, but if done without mistake can be good, but yeah *modest*.

>>2530084
There's possibility your pipes are damaged, beware of leaks from gaskets and seals after they thaw.
But in the meantime with zero knowledge of your model or plumbing system, either do what you can to heat up the water tank itself to 80-90F for prolonged time, or even going with the heatgun, being extra careful not to blister the PVC, since they are under high pressure from the ice.

1. There's this stuff called RV Antifreeze, it's designed for the water system in that thing you live in and can be bought in any hardware store.

2. If you're stuck living in a camper, and you survive the winter, next summer either insulate the thing or build a sod house like a normal person you fucking hobolo.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sod_house

3. Pipe Heater Cord. Type that into to Google. I use it on my rigid hose water system, safe for plastic too.

I specifically avoided mentioning this and instead said salt because of the potential dangers of someone who off boards sewerage. If he's got pets, they'll probably be dead. Similarly problems with anything growing near the dump site.

ETHYLENE glycol is toxic. PROPYLENE glycol is literally used in food.

Not that it will help OP, since the pipe's already frozen, but get your shit straight.

A propane torpedo heater and a tank of propane when youre at risk of freezing pipes. Will have the upside up passive heat, as heat rises. Dumping boiling water onto a frozen shitter will probably cause it to shatter. Even if it didn't, the water won't act fast enough and you're going to hard boil your legs and flood the bathroom.

Put a space heater in there and thaw it or do as the other anon suggested and get some pipe heater cable. Wrap the cable around the shitter and plug it in. It's going to take time either way. In the meantime do like the other poor people and shit/shower in the nearest McDonalds bathroom.

No you didn't.
>Water-propylene glycol mixtures dyed pink to indicate the mixture is relatively nontoxic are sold under the name of RV or marine antifreeze. Propylene glycol is frequently used as a substitute for ethylene glycol in low toxicity, environmentally friendly automotive antifreeze. It is also used to winterize the plumbing systems in vacant structures
I posted it specifically because it is a food safe, very common RV antifreeze for potable water supplies.

Run the heaters directed at the pipes, you can also make a heat inductor using wire, or another malleable metal that takes heat from in front of the heater to which is wrapped around the pipes.

How do you not? I don't know any RVs without propane. Anyway I have a 26ft travel trailer. I will only have problems when temps get under 25 degrees because the bathroom does not get heat from the propane furnace. I have to leave a space heater in the bathroom, typically with the service panel to the shower removed. Either that or trickle water at night.

Also, you need tank warmers on your black tank because otherwise you're going to have a shit popsicle going on. Or throw a heat lamp under there. They sell tank warmers, heat tape, and pipe warmers on Amazon. I have a bunch on a 4 gang rocker switch panel. They have a thermostat and only turn on under 40 degrees. Stop being white trash.

^This, the LP style using the BBQ LP cylinders works at all angles.

Then aim that beneath your camper (block off any air exits if you don't have skirting with cardboard, ,many stores give it away) and heat all beneath to the lines and because heat rises. I keep a Mr Heater of the style mentioned for local heating.

Collect things that make heat. Corded heat guns (battery units are too weak) used with care (put your hand between gun and target and if you can hold your hand there you won't overheat the target) are very useful. I collect those too at yard sales etc but they're cheap new.

Put together a simple bucket toilet as used for camping. Shit in bags, place outside to freeze. When ground thaws dig hole and bury or toss into burn barrel/fire. It's only shit, not nuclear waste. BTW burn barrels should really be tubes and have no bottom. That way you can kick them over instead of emptying them. Hunt one or several. Old 55 gallon drums work well.

Next time plan for cold weather during hot weather and remember every minute you spend on non-useful activities (like getting smarter about everything) you pissed away. Study all this shit instead of wasting whatever time you wasted. You're not poor due to being smart so stop being you and force yourself to do better.

Have gas. Collect BBQ cylinders all the time at every opportunity then fill them and stash them outdoors. I get mine at yard sales etc but obviously winter is a bit late so buying two (run one then have a spare to rotate so you're never out) is wise.

Underpin your camper which you should have known to do from the relentless study of how to live better in poverty.

You got your ass handed to you but it's a learning experience. Take (not kidding, I do) written notes. For example next time you expect deep freezing weather shut off your water and drain all your water containers which are subject to freezing. Drain your water lines.

What did you study to do before the freeze?

I had a frozen main and well guys came to fix it. They used a torch (butane? propane? idk) to start thawing it, then they were going to use a steamer if it was really bad but that ended up not being necessary. Then installed heat tape to prevent it from happening again.
