Will Doug spill more oil into the local eco system?
Will Doug ever raise a sail?
Will Doug's hydraulic systems work properly?
How long will stay anchored in front of a bar in Alabama?
Will Doug ever forgive his Mother for loving him too much?

Stay tuned and find out in this edition of /SVSG/

>Will Doug's hydraulic systems work properly?
If they do, will Doug know?

The latest video where the hydraulic halyard winch mod is further complicated to the point that Doug forgets what valves he's already installed "downstairs" returns to classic old school befuddled cluster-fuckery as only Doug can do it, plus there's an extra helping of post- oil spill puppies and dolphins.
Destined to be a classic, and with the discovery that the "relief valve" he confidently explains and tries adjusting is actually just a fixed plug, we can count on a sequel when he has to open it all back up.

All it cost his "fear" was his house, relationships, access to grandson, marriage and so forth.

Part of the idea is to learn from other people, not just your own screwups. Doug could have bought plans from someone who knew what they were doing; could have planned out a huge amount of what he is now pottering around doing. Consider the most recent video, where he is jury-rigging a holder for the winch; no reason it couldn't have been planned out long ago. The boat still has not sailed even 100 yards, still has stuff to be re-worked after so many years of building it. How is this anything to be supremely proud of?

>> No.2522538

>>2522510
>jury-rigging a holder for the winch

Exactly, and it's worse than it appears when you consider the pages of "planning" notes found on multiple websites and authoritative lecturing there and in videos on subjects like that halyard winch setup. All that is for show and in reality he just wings it, and based on that video hasn't even gotten any better at basic stuff like simple fabrication techniques and pattern making.
The aft step going to the tender is another head shaker, how the hell was a step or at least a bracket not planned until now? And even if you give a pass on that, why the hell drill through the hull to attach the step and invite ongoing corrosion issues when he's all about steel and welding?

The chefs kiss on that one is using the problematic davit winch axle as a support- thing had to be coaxed into keeping the finger chopping open chain drive system from self disassembling as it twisted and bent in use, so let's have crew stand in the middle of it.
A step bracket there could have doubled as a center bearing support for that shaft and avoided ALL of the chain shedding problems and drilling of holes in the transom, but he rejected that advice.

Fucking hilarious that all of this winch rigamarole is because even with multiple people on board and a massive two speed winch they can't get the main fully hoisted manually.
I've never been in the "it's gonna capsize" group but seeing how dependent he is on pumps and valves and remembering what's installed just to work a halyard, I'm coming around...in a squall you might only have seconds to douse your sails before being knocked down or there being too much wind to handle and stow the sails before losing control of them.
And that's just the halyards, he still hasn't begun rigging sheets or any means of trimming them on any of his sails.

Hydraulic steering makes adding an autopilot relatively pain free and also isn't a bad idea for a sailing vessel of Seeker's size/weight...
but that just points out Doug's folly, rather than prioritizing a reasonable hydraulic steering system with a manual backup, he made the primary steering manual and as a result he needs a giant ass wheel that has to rotate a dozen times in each direction to hit the stops...even minor corrections on the river required constant wild spins of the helm.
Meanwhile the parts needed to make a sensible steering system are just sitting there and he's adding hydraulics to a halyard winch to overcome all the needless weight and friction built into the sails.

That looks like absolute shit. If by some miracle he does raise all sails and halyards are run to the pilot house, he is going to have so much line piled up he won't know what to do with it all. There is no where to stow it all even if Doug knew how to.

The whole premise thst a 74' sail powered "work boat" hosting researchers needs to be rigged for single handing from an enclosed pilot house is unfathomably dumb on its face.
That he established that criteria first and is beholden to the very specific needs of that kind of rig while simultaneously assembling it by seat of the pants guesstimating with virtually no sailing experience or understanding of the most basic basics of running rigging is comedy gold.
Even with a state of the art rig designed for single handing by professionals using real marine equipment you have to be on your toes and not a cavalier dumbfuck, and even then it's always a bit dicey, even on a boat half that size/displacement (or 1/4 the displacement if you factor in Seeker winding up being double its projected design displacement).

picrel shows a couple of basic elements of a smart si gleaning setup that are missing in reverend Dong's boat shaped rats nest-
-color coding of control lines led to the cockpit
-actual marine hardware like fairleads and turning blocks that aren't tied on with harbor freight ratchet straps
-mast isn't welded permanently in place and reliant on welds for weatherproofing
-boat is heeling because of wind pressure on sails while the boat is moving under sail power in open water...the angle may look like Seeker does when run aground on a sandbar, but it's different.

Doug would of course claim that that pic just shows how needlessly complicated a typical bermuda rigged boat is and that junks are superior on that count alone but a) that's not a typical bermuda rig even for something intended for singlehanding and doesn't *need* that many lines led aft...and b) junk running rigging isn't necessarily simple, especially when set up for singlehanded operation.
Picrel is the boat of the guy who did more to advance singlehanded offshore sailing and junk rig adaptation to modern/western hull forms than anyone, just as an example of what a proper setup looks like.
He was a legendary yachtsman and pioneer in offshore sailing techology and junk rigging who proved his ideas with multiple blue water passages, I doubt that Doug would even recognize his name if he heard it.
Also worth noting that after that boat was proven seaworthy and safe in a number of Atlantic crossings, it sank on an Atlantic crossing-

"Jester competed in the first OSTAR Transatlantic race in 1960, which was won by Sir Francis Chichester in Gypsy Moth II . Jester came second. She competed in every single subsequent OSTAR, but in 1989 was seriously damaged under sail and lost."

>it's about RAH RAHing or shitting on some guy who DID some diy.

What do you mean "did"?
That's the past tense of "done" and implies completion of the project.
The PRIMARY goal in this case was to diy a SAILING VESSEL to be used for MARINE RESEARCH.
That hasn't happened, and even the basic component systems that make up a functional research vessel or just a recreational sailboat have never been completed, and attempts to do so mushroom into more branches of DIY complexity as with the halyard winch project that became a hydraulic engineering and welding project that became an environmental cleanup project...and all of that was an offshoot of simply trying to raise the sails fully to determine lengths and locations for running rigging that hasn't even been designed, let alone built or finished.
Meanwhile every single block involved from the masthead to the turning blocks has been been described by Doug as "just temporary until we find out what we like" as have the types and locations of every other component involved.
And that's just to finish the single task of DIYing a SAILING VESSEL, ie a vessel capable of sailing, that has been proven by ACTUALLY SAILING.
Doug hasn't "done" that at all, a d besides that his entire DIY philosophy is about never stopping and always remaining busy, until you die, so saying that he "DID some diy" is a gross mischaracterization he would bristle at...Doug *IS* DIY personified.

A junk rigged to be controlled from the cockpit has more lines than a single halyard, and the sheeting system on a modern junk is pretty complex by comparison to a standard marconi rigged main. Regardless, only dipshits use non- marine wooden cheeked pulleys with spring loaded pelican hooks tied to harbor freight ratchet straps as turning blocks as if the distance and direction from the mast to the pilothouse were some mysterious formula that might radically change so let's keep everything temporary.
If anything, the fact that the halyard and any downhauls involved with a junk are simpler than a race rigged Marconi sloop just makes it even more stupid that dedicated turning blocks and fairleads are still absent.

LMAO, nobody has ever said that he "controls every thread" memetard.
He and Betsy and their drooling minions certainly may try, but they fail every time and even on FB and YT where Doug nukes any and all responses, he can't control people just being bored with his shtick and not engaging, which is clearly the trend. On the three plebbit subs devoted to seeker he gets nothing but pushback from all the people he's shit on for years, many of whom were supporters and even worked on the project. He even started a new sub because his original one became so toxic, and after the backroom deals with the mod of the "haters" sub it only took a couple of days for the new Doug- free sub to be nearly the same size as his new one. He doesn't dare try to "control" the sub he just wrangled moderator status over because the only engagement he gets is "haters" and at least they watch his videos to make fun of what a retard he is.
He's a professional clown now, and as a "sailor" with a "sailing vessel" serves as a master class in what not to do and why...this latter role will only amplify as he tries to "control" his meme sails and motion generated by them.
Your latest attempt at turning the very accurate CULT descriptor around on people who recognize one when they see it also serves as a master class in how to confirm that you are a triggered cult member lashing out desperately as his world crumbles around him.
JFC, you even fucked up that meme; there's supposed to be some implied struggle but choosing "Doug is a moron" and ignoring the stupid Donger cultist fever dream "gotcha" one is the easy and obvious solution, there's no struggle whatsoever.

It is as far as being interesting contribution, but the intense ramping up of that activity here and elsewhere in the last few months as Seeker is allegedly out of the build stage and operational has become its own phenomenon.
Rigging/hoisting sails is the last of the original contruction work to make a "sailing vessel" and while they like to pretend it's moving g right along, they alleged began and said they were ready for sail trials 8 months ago.
It's not going well, it's not very captivating to see an idiot move "ropes" around, and so for the Dongers the answers to the eternal question "What did you make today" have boiled down to:

"repairs to things that failed almost immediately after launch"

"another stab at guessing how a junk sail is rigged"

"boot licking apologies to the coast guard"

"an embarrassingly juvenile failed effort to silence anyone who criticizes the BSO or Doug and his die hard followers"

"barely comprehensible memes"

Oddly enough there's a recent post on Seeker's FB from a guy who has built an all steel 42' trimaran from an old piece of chimney pipe with smaller pipes for the amas...
He's had it on the water for a few years and actually sailed it, so he's ahead of Doug in that regard, and appears far more sensible and humble even though he tends to come to Doug's defense quickly based on having been called a nut.
But like Seeker his amateur build has been fraught with hurdles and re- re- re- configuring of issues that "haters" warned him about, and his original goal of travelii around the world in it is in limbo. The design is hydrodynamically questionable but I've seen worse and it appears reasonably well built.
It's kooky as hell but he's actually doing it (sailing) and rather than being a hostile asshole he took ownership of the criticism by naming it the SV Pipedream-

"This channel is mainly about my boat Pipedream. I built this boat out of an old cooling tower ( chimney ) some years ago and I am currently trying to complete a refit and finalise modifications so that I can do some sort of trip.

There is a lot of welding, grinding, plasma cutting and painting to do and in some ways this is an abject lesson in why it is easier to just buy a boat. But for those who like to tinker and do things themselves (and are masochistic) then building is an affliction that can not be avoided.

>And then bitch about other ships not giving him enough room.

It would also give him another reason to lash out against marinas since a 74' trimaran has to go on an end tie and they only have a few per marina and charge up the ass for them.

It would also be amusing to hear him gnash his teeth and moan when he inevitably needs to haul out at an actual boatyard and has to use a far more expensive marine railway because his trimaran is too wide for a travel lift and being the manly steel boater he is he refused to make the amas easily detachable and welded them in solid just like his light pole masts.
Please Mr. Jesus make it happen.

then one day they are all happy and excited and when you ask why they say, "this new girl at works' husband works on (thing they need to deal with but won't), and she asked *him* and HE says I need to (do exactly what you've been saying for YEARS) to (deal with thing).
Then they act like they figured it all out on their own by asking * the right person* and ignore the fact that you repeatedly told them exactly what an experienced professional finally did, but starting nine years ago.

The mizzen winch he talks about it this video is exactly this scenario; people have told him he needs one for years and years and he was a complete asshole to them for trying to help, and told them he knew better. Now some random guy convinces him and Doug takes credit for "surrounding himself with the right people".

Why even have a mizzen mast?

>> No.2531149

Split rigs in general allow smaller, easier to handle sails for
any given sail area, which is why they're popular for cruising boats.
Two masted schooners tend to be less naturally balanced (lots of power generated way aft) and harder to control and three masted versions can help balance the sail area out.
Marconi ketches and yawls can be made better balanced than a sloop with a mizzen and allow more sail combinations like jib and mizzen for low power in high winds or a adding mizzen staysail for more power and in light winds.
They can also allow sail/ rig configurations that take advantage of certain loopholes in racing rules, and some yawls are basically just sloops with a mizzen added for some advantage, while ketches are usually designed and masts positioned to use all the masts in normal conditions and may not sail or bslance well without the mizzen.
It's even possible to use the mizzen sheet and a bungee cord to make a ketch or yawl self steer.
In Seekers case much of this will not apply because the mizzen is pretty small and that pilothouse and bulwarks is a massive amount of windage.

Ironically, Doug's crusading minions think they're helping him but in reality do the opposite...Doug likes to compare his alleged bravery and vision with that of Henry Ford, but Ford is THE poster child for bad decisions driven by pigheaded arrogance, writ large-

>Not listening:

Successful leaders often disregard others’ ideas and are unwilling to listen to others. It is not only disrespectful to the team members but also harmful as it was with Henry Ford.

The needless sarcasm and cutting remarks that we think make us witty. Ford was known for such sarcastic comments and practical jokes that may be funny to him but insulted others.

>Making excuses:

The need to reposition our annoying behavior as a permanent fixture, so people excuse us for it.

>Clinging to the past:

The need to deflect blame away from ourselves and onto events and people from our past, a subset of blaming everyone else.

>Punishing the messenger:

The misguided need to attack the innocent who are usually only trying to help us. Henry Ford did it to Ernest Kanzler, who was just a messenger of the bad news.

...It is not just the arrogant leaders who fall prey to these bad leadership habits. The most humble leaders often fall prey to many of these bad habits when they constantly get positive reinforcement.

***When a leader hardly ever gets real, truthful, and unfiltered feedback that may help them stay grounded, it is easy to fall prey to one or more of these bad habits***."

If anyone has primed Doug for failure and caused his build to take far more time than necessary for poor results, it's his uncritical yes-men that try to silence all critical asessment.

>you'd thing they would want to talk about a good boat build like Acorn to Arabela
Hilarious that in order to COPE you need to pretend that it's an either/ or proposition and people who discuss Doug and his shit boat as a cautionary tale MUST only do that and can't do the other.
But since you bring them up, there's no need to discuss them here be a use those people don't go out of their way to silence all other social media either directly or by the kind of distraction and forum flooding you engage in.

This has been explained over and over and every time it was suggested that Doug just not be a complete asshole to people who didn't deserve it, he doubled down and all that's left on his side is stupid yes men and a boat that has taken a ridiculously long time to become an unfinished piece of crap.

the trannies are gone and the boat is expected to move to the water in about a year. only one dyke left, deck, rudder, cabin, and cockpit is on. interior fittings are 75% done. masts are made. sails being made (I think for free), engine is in the boat, prop and shaft are ready for install. all the navigation equipment, power, stoves, and refrigerator/freezer are installed. Unless it's going to be about the project being an objective failure it's hard to imagine completing a documentary about a "sailing vessel" without it actually sailing.
Supposedly the filming began fairly early on at a time when there was nothing but good will and lots of public interest...makes me wonder if there was some financial deal made for exclusive rights to make a documentary. Are you privy to the actual deal they entered into?

Because documentaries and similar "reality based" shows get made all the time that end up showing what really happens, as opposed to the fantasy public relations booster storyline that the subject wants it to be or simply eating all the time and expense involved. It's also pretty standard that even if there is no overriding agreement setting out the terms of any collaboration with the subject, everyone who gets filmed signs a release allowing those images to be used, so the ability to force a documentary to be abandoned completely is pretty limited.

Pretty interesting though that with sailing and the documentary release being two major generators of attention for anyone whose followed to project, suddenly there's a HUGE effort being made to paint any expression of interest in the project as a bad thing...

it's no longer "don't say bad things about Doug", the mantra has evolved to "Nobody cares either way, nothing of interest to discuss period, dont speak of him or his project AT ALL".

That would certainly fit with the idea that the documentary is now being seen as a liability and all the foot dragging and trolling is designed to poison that well, because success is not an option and never has been.

New video.
Less cringe than usual because it features someone other than Doug *and* Doug actually lets him speak.
Odd though that as he actually gets to finishing out the running rigging (or phase one since "its all temporary"), his junk sailing expert friends are nowhere to be seen and he's got a dude who sails an FRP boat he didn't diy and has a marconi rig.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=e2RPQAzJQFg&feature=emb_title

Also his hard on for using rock climbing gear and techniques almost got him killed when the wrong line jammed it up and he tore it apart while aloft and under load trying to un-jam it.
Speaking of jamming, the slop in the fixed halyard blocks is a recipe for sails that have to be lowered by cutting the halyard at the masthead...unless the shared axle that uses cotter pins on both sides fails first, or maybe the whole mast head comes off since half the bolts don't even have nuts.

I think is assumes a lot; it's never been publicly established that the doc was intended to show Doug in a favorable light. I can't imagine him cooperating if he didn't expect that, but these kinds of productions play into those kinds of expectations all the time for just that reason, when they know all along that the subject won't like the end result.
They certainly *could* decide to bail out and eat production costs, but there's nothing that requires them to and in cases where the subject strings them along and then tries to sabotage the production to gain the upper hand they usually don't just roll over and go away.
That kind of thing makes for an interesting documentary in and of itself, and it's pretty much a given that anything that isn't a slavish love song to Doug's personality and "accomplishments" will cause him to lash out bitterly at the producers, so they have nothing to lose and a fascinating look into a crazy train wreck of sociopathic hubris if they just use what they have and make the film about a lunatic who monkeywrenches a film about him before even doing the thing he's allegedly interesting for, namely building a sailing vessel.

weirdo? explain I've been watching since just before the keel pour and haven't seen anything about him that's weird.

sycophant? a sycophant is someone who flatters you to get something. I see people who volunteer for experience or because they want to help and people who are being paid.

I really wonder at the hate and vitriol that you strange people have for someone who actually is doing what he said he would do. who's doing a very good job at building a boat. I don't mean doug.

Even the smallest elements of his build reveal layer upon layer of stupidity when scrutinized...

Like in this latest video where he says he just has to fabricate a couple of cleats to be ready to complete one masts worth of rigging. Setting aside the wisdom of making vs buying them, if you do choose to make your own how the hell do you not in 15 YEARS just come up with a tally of how many cleats you will need and then at the very least gang up all the cutting and machining of parts to save the time and hassle of making everything from scratch on an individual basis?
With tiny bit of common sense you could fabricate and assemble every cleat needed on a boat that size in a couple of days, *especially* when you have CNC capabilities.
Instead he spends hours setting up and hacking/ beating/grinding metal for each cleat and seems to believe that his ability to cobble together a unique cleat as needed makes him smarter than someone who would do the planning to build them all to a uniform specification, like wanting to save time and have interchangeable units of superior quality is a weakness.

Doug, get this through your borderline personality disorder-filled, potato-looking head: you have not successfully built anything. Not today. Not yesterday. Not the five thousand days before that. Your "skills" - like a mentally-handicapped baboon's - have built a steaming, disintegrating turd that barely bobs above the waterline, and reeks of AIDS and ebola as you bump it downriver, smearing bits of this giant turd everywhere you go. When you stand atop your unsteady turd, you notice a slick of turd oil turning the sea a magnificent brown behind you, dead fish floating to the surface. Angry locals point and gag, demanding that the UN convene a General Assembly to deal with your abomination against humanity. Parents tell their children: "Remember, don't be arrogant like Doug, or your life will be devoured by a turd of such crushing failure, suicide is the only escape!" When you drag your shit-reeking body to shore, in a vain attempt to escape the decay and flies around SV Turd, folks all exclaim, "There's Doug, accursed captain of the shittiest bowel movement ever to besmirch the waters of our planet."

no that is not what my list is, it was just to keep track of anything I fixed. big project or little. also for the battery replacements, that wasn't just popping out old bats and installing new ones, it was building something to convert the device to another battery type, like D cells to 18650 etc.

I mean If I wanted to brag then I'd have to rack my brain for everything I worked on commercial airlines, or trade show displays and the hundreds of computers I built, but I really don't count stuff I did for my job.

well most tubes that were made for the most part are still good. in some cases I bought them by the basket full and sorted through them. tested them and found that 99% of them were good.

if you watch shango066 he was able to get a tv working that was covered in 2 or 3 inches of dirt, and rat shit and had bean rained on for over 30 years.

tube stuff is incredibly robust. when I parted stuff out is was because the case was badly damaged, shattered, and the chassis was badly corroded.

These are sister ships. Both built as steel origami about 75' long. The top boat was done first and was the inspiration for the bottom. The top boat creates buoyant volume by having a tall rounded bow and a flat wide stern. This vessel has sailed to Europe and back using two shitty junk sails. The bottom example has limited buoyant volume due to the low deck at the bow (as shown by the red line), and a steep narrow stern.

I know what that is. It's "leaterette" - the canvas is the structural part, then it's coated with plastic or vinyl. If the weave is showing, it's worn off. You can't really restore it, you can use black show polish to hide the wear, or replace it. Think cracked old car seats or dashboards. Putting oil on it would just have the oil sitting on the surface.
Yours is so worn that all that's left is the canvas/linen sheet the vinyl was attached to.
I have no clue what the vintage radio market is like, if replacing it impacts the value or not - but that's what it is.

your behavior is really bizarre. this obsession with this is concerning. you must not have a job or maybe no actual problems in your life. or maybe your life is so shitty this is how you make yourself feel better. maybe it's time to pic related.

Says the guy who has appointed himself as an authority figure to watch over the behavior of other posters itt and respond within seconds of posts he finds "concerning"....

Lmao now that they can't even come up with some kind of bullshit to spew at people they're changing gears and just personally attacking them and not even addressing actual facts and arguments. Cope, seethe, drool, etc.

Literally the first time the main has been fully raised, in zero wind and not sailing...and his janky golf ball meme rigging comes apart.
What a terrible coincidence to befall the DIY MASTERMIND as he teaches a sailing world hobbled by tradition to break free and LIVE!

nothing about this is diy related. mentioning "diy" does not make a post diy.

Just saying-
>nothing about this is diy related
-over and over and over doesn't make it true, so keep seething, I guess

Also, nothing in your wannabe forum parenting is even remotely related to diy, and you know it.

Hey Doug,

Would it kill you to diy a proper seaman's ladder?

It would probably be less likely to kill him, but he would just say that I must have been raised by women and ask what I built today.
