Thats a pretty vague descriptor; personally the ones that make my eye start to twitch are when people take quality materials and apply them to garbage structures in ways that render them useless even for recycling.
Extreme deterioration can be repaired, good architecture that's been butchered or otherwise defiled can be restored, but something like exquisitely turned exotic hardwood balusters or flooring or amazing natural stone that's been hacked up to go into some tract house shitbox in a failed attempt to make it appear "grand" and "luxurious" is usually not worth the effort to try reclaiming it.
In my experience Persians are some of the worst offenders and will projectile vomit money and precious materials all over the lowliest and most structurally questionable houses, and then when the 24×24 exotic imported marble quarry tile flooring cracks because the cheap ass stucco tract house they put it in is sliding down the hill and they call you to "fix it", they act like you are trying to scam them by suggesting a real repair and not just doing a cosmetic bandaid.

Well, let me tell you, this house is just plain awful. First off, that roof is as crooked as a dog's hind leg. And those windows are fogged up worse than my old truck in the morning. The front door is hanging on by a thread, just like my patience with Bobby sometimes. And that yard is a mess - there are weeds everywhere. It's just not a very good-looking house at all.

I'm a drafter at a civil engineering firm. Pre-covid we mostly did utilitarian & municipal projects. Not true, you seem to be assuming that a "flash flood" only describes situations where water moves over the ground quickly in a lateral motion, like where you get walls of water and mudslides. That doesn't happen in the area where that pic is from, but the flat nature of the topography means that heavy rainfall overwhelms drainage precisely because there's virtually no pitch to make it move.
A flash flood there won't have much if any current component, but can rise from nothing to many feet deep in a frighteningly short amount of time even without things like levee openings or failures.
It also doesn't have to be hurricane related; some of the worst flash flooding in those areas is just regular rainstorms-

As someone in a similar situation who did mostly residential work as opposed to municipal/commercial, I can give you a bit of good news and bad news. The bad news is that, as a civil engineering draftsman, your opinion on the aesthetics of the house does not really hold much weight. The good news is that, as a civil engineering draftsman, the aesthetics of the house is not your problem unless it's going to be your neighbor, so there's no reason to give much attention to the architectural plans beyond the footprint of the building and where utilities come in.
Also, when they can't understand that there's a restriction on the property, you suggest they talk to the village/city/county building/zoning departments about it. Or, you (or more correctly, the engineer of record) calls up the architect and tells them about the restriction which should have been on the plat of survey of the property anyway so that the architect can tell the owner about why he has to change the plans because he didn't do his due diligence.
Also also, an owner being his own G.C. is the absolute worst. Avoid those like the Plague.

Besides all the elements of older designs that had to compromise for the sake of available materials, heating and cooling equipment, weatherproofing systems, etc. and aren't necessary, there were also social "rules" and trends that dictated how homes were designed that nobody in their right mind would ever build today even in a revival style home and nearly always upgrade to a more modern design when rehabilitating older structures for full time living.
There are certainly elements of traditional architecture that make sense, and thoughtful modern architects have no issue with using them where appropriate...but the idea that "traditional = gud, modern = bad" is the exact opposite of thoughtfulness, it's just gratuitous sentimentality.

The other inconvenient fact about people who promote this notion is that al.ost without fail they have never lived in a thoughtfully designed modern home of the type they dismiss out of hand. In many cases they can't even recognize the elements of modern architectural design that have been retrofitted into older structures or are regulary used in the design and construction of traditional styled modern structures that they assume are "better" because they happen to mimic the looks of older buildings.

That's not done with trusses it's hand framed. Notches are cut in the first truss, 2x4s are nailed in on top of the first truss and against the second truss sitting in the notches. Long piece of rough Sawn 1xwhatever is nailed on the front. Plywood typically a hardwood plywood is used to sheet the gap.

This looks similar to the place down the road from me. It started off as a small single story house and a garage about 50 feet away. Then some Mexicans bought it. They started adding on to the house, and eventually put a second story on it. They also put a second story on the garage and turned it into another house. I went with a big group to a 5 bedroom airbnb that was a mcmansion. The place was shit. It looked good from the outside, and probably would have been impressive on the inside if you were there a short time for a dinner party. All of the interior finishes were either cheap, or shittily done. None of the millwork miters fit right, the giant bathroom had shitty $199 vanities from Lowes, the red and blue pex was sticking out of the walls, the tile was sloppy, so was the sheetrock work. The place got worse the more you looked at it.

The city I grew up in had this monstrosity. On windy days neighbours would stay inside because bits of it would fall off and get thrown all over the neighborhood.
