Thats a pretty vague descriptor; personally the ones that make my eye start to twitch are when people take quality materials and apply them to garbage structures in ways that render them useless even for recycling.
Extreme deterioration can be repaired, good architecture that's been butchered or otherwise defiled can be restored, but something like exquisitely turned exotic hardwood balusters or flooring or amazing natural stone that's been hacked up to go into some tract house shitbox in a failed attempt to make it appear "grand" and "luxurious" is usually not worth the effort to try reclaiming it.
In my experience Persians are some of the worst offenders and will projectile vomit money and precious materials all over the lowliest and most structurally questionable houses, and then when the 24×24 exotic imported marble quarry tile flooring cracks because the cheap ass stucco tract house they put it in is sliding down the hill and they call you to "fix it", they act like you are trying to scam them by suggesting a real repair and not just doing a cosmetic bandaid.

Well, let me tell you, this house is just plain awful. First off, that roof is as crooked as a dog's hind leg. And those windows are fogged up worse than my old truck in the morning. The front door is hanging on by a thread, just like my patience with Bobby sometimes. And that yard is a mess - there are weeds everywhere. It's just not a very good-looking house at all.

You know what I'd do if I were in your shoes? I'd tear that old house down and start fresh. It ain't worth the time and effort to try and fix it up. And you'll save yourself a lot of headaches if you just start over. Who knows, you might even end up with a better house in the end. It's definitely worth considering. So go ahead and give it some thought - you might be surprised at how much better off you'll be without that old, awful house.

And when you build that new house, make sure you power it entirely with propane. You know, propane is the ultimate energy source. It's clean, it's reliable, and it's affordable. Plus, you don't need no fancy electricity to run your appliances and lights. Just beautiful, clean propane for everything. You'll save money on your utility bills and you'll be doing your part to help the environment. So go ahead and make the switch to propane - you won't regret it.

Peggy, have I told you about my idea for an all-propane house? Think about it - no more expensive electricity bills, no more worrying about power outages. Just beautiful, clean propane for everything. It's not like we need all those fancy electrical gadgets anyway. I mean, what did we do before we had electricity? We managed just fine. So let's do it - let's build an all-propane house and make the switch to a simpler, more efficient way of living.

We should do it Peggy, we could make it real. The first home powered entirely by propane, not a wire in sight.

Two roads over, there is something I call "The Redneck Compound"

>Nestled between two swamps in a valley
>A singlewide trailer with an extended roof supported by stacks of tree stumps and logs
>A pool next to the road, it's usually green
>Five sheds, some wood and some steel, scabbed together to form mega-shed
>Also connected to the singlewide and mega-shed is a quonset made out of scrap metal and multiple layers of canvas tarps
>Another singlewide trailer is adjacent to the first structure
>Washing machine and dryer are in the lawn with 240 extension cords running to them
>Spigot runs to a shower head hanging from a tree near the road
>Giant burn pit in the center of the dirt driveway
>Makeshift spit formed from rebar, they're always cooking something on it
>Spit is powered by a 1970s F150 on cinder blocks with a belt running from the driveshaft like in Predator
>A large chicken-wire rodeo area complete with goats, a cow, two horses, and a shitload of chickens co-existing on about 900 square feet of grass
>New dog every week or two, since they let them run loose and they get hit hy traffic
>Trash and junk everywhere. There isn't a single clean spot on the property
I drive by it often to get to the highway. It's an experience.

is there something about living in colder climates that makes people retarded...?
People who lives in areas where AC makes up the bulk of climate control costs seem to be able to look at a pic of an alpine ski lodge or arctic research station without dismissing those structures out of hand as too hard/expensive to keep cold, but show a building perfectly suited to subtropical and tropical areas that are above 55-60°F for 340+ days a year and some tard ALWAYS has to quack about hurr durr muh cost to heat it.

Imagine living in a flood zone that requires being on stilts, where you very well might need a boat to escape or assist neighbors or get to supplies, and it gets pinned under your house by floodwaters and swamped/sunk and also damages the house as a hurricane passes through.

Seems like you could move the boat if you were expecting a flood. Flash floods happen but not in wide open areas like that. The spacing of the poles seems to be the main argument against parking it under the house since there's not much margin for error and the consequences of hitting one can be high. Plus people who live in areas like that likely make frequent use of their boats.

>Flash floods happen but not in wide open areas like that.
Not true, you seem to be assuming that a "flash flood" only describes situations where water moves over the ground quickly in a lateral motion, like where you get walls of water and mudslides. That doesn't happen in the area where that pic is from, but the flat nature of the topography means that heavy rainfall overwhelms drainage precisely because there's virtually no pitch to make it move.
A flash flood there won't have much if any current component, but can rise from nothing to many feet deep in a frighteningly short amount of time even without things like levee openings or failures.
It also doesn't have to be hurricane related; some of the worst flash flooding in those areas is just regular rainstorms-

A lovely blend of Georgian... Tudor and... Norman?

I don't even know how you'd go about altering it to make it cohesive. Remove everything Tudor style. You can probably replace the outcrop to that balcony with some simple stonework to frame the window.

Garages and outbuilding? Maybe style them like a converted stable/coach house?

No idea what to do with the turrets. One you could possibly make angular and turn into something styled like a clocktower?

'101 Things I Learned in Architecture School' is a collection of simple architectural best practices that can help you avoid common mistakes in design. Not all of it is directly applicable to designing a house but it does give you a better frame of concept to think in while deciding on floorplans and architectural elements. It's a very easy read and makes for a good mini-sized coffee table book when you're done with it. Good bathroom reader too.

As someone in a similar situation who did mostly residential work as opposed to municipal/commercial, I can give you a bit of good news and bad news. The bad news is that, as a civil engineering draftsman, your opinion on the aesthetics of the house does not really hold much weight. The good news is that, as a civil engineering draftsman, the aesthetics of the house is not your problem unless it's going to be your neighbor, so there's no reason to give much attention to the architectural plans beyond the footprint of the building and where utilities come in.
Also, when they can't understand that there's a restriction on the property, you suggest they talk to the village/city/county building/zoning departments about it. Or, you (or more correctly, the engineer of record) calls up the architect and tells them about the restriction which should have been on the plat of survey of the property anyway so that the architect can tell the owner about why he has to change the plans because he didn't do his due diligence.
Also also, an owner being his own G.C. is the absolute worst. Avoid those like the Plague.

How to keep a residential design thoughtful...
>It's simple. Reject modernism.
LOL. The primary principle that guides modern residential design is thoughtful consideration of the physical and emotional needs and lifestyle of the people who will inhabit it, rather than forcing them to compromise any of that for the sake of mindless adherence to tradition.
Besides all the elements of older designs that had to compromise for the sake of available materials, heating and cooling equipment, weatherproofing systems, etc. and aren't necessary, there were also social "rules" and trends that dictated how homes were designed that nobody in their right mind would ever build today even in a revival style home and nearly always upgrade to a more modern design when rehabilitating older structures for full time living.
There are certainly elements of traditional architecture that make sense, and thoughtful modern architects have no issue with using them where appropriate...but the idea that "traditional = gud, modern = bad" is the exact opposite of thoughtfulness, it's just gratuitous sentimentality.

The other inconvenient fact about people who promote this notion is that al.ost without fail they have never lived in a thoughtfully designed modern home of the type they dismiss out of hand. In many cases they can't even recognize the elements of modern architectural design that have been retrofitted into older structures or are regulary used in the design and construction of traditional styled modern structures that they assume are "better" because they happen to mimic the looks of older buildings.

>can have a dumptruck ass backyard because the house is nestled all the way up to the front of your property
>don't have a "side" door so you never wonder where your packages have been left
>benefit of having a porch entry as the only entrance is it's sheltered
>can go out and have a smoke right there and not get wet, can also just pop into the garage
>open the garage door and have some beers and watch the rain
>don't have a bullshit front yard/garden to maintain just to keep up with the jones', just throw down 12 sq ft of rocks and spray it with weed killer once a year
>single floor so easier to heat and you can easily land a pizza on your roof
>lone pine tree is also your christmas tree just dangle some lights on that beast

This looks similar to the place down the road from me. It started off as a small single story house and a garage about 50 feet away. Then some Mexicans bought it. They started adding on to the house, and eventually put a second story on it. They also put a second story on the garage and turned it into another house. Then, they started adding on to both the house and the garage house until they met. This all took about 10 years. The last step was to stucco it all, because that's what Mexicans do around here.

They're meant to look flashy to the average eye, which is untrained in basic architecture. It's funny to see houses with grand fronts on them but cheap vinyl siding on the other three sides of the house. Used to be that only the back of McMansions were like that in order to hide the cheapness from the street.
Personally, I'd like for my house to look like a boring and simple Cape Cod house from the street and then have it extend back into the property where prying eyes can't see.

All of the interior finishes were either cheap, or shittily done. None of the millwork miters fit right, the giant bathroom had shitty $199 vanities from Lowes, the red and blue pex was sticking out of the walls, the tile was sloppy, so was the sheetrock work. The place got worse the more you looked at it.
