Stupid air bubbles reeeeeeeeeeeee

How can I remove them? There is no qtdndtot and google gives results for pouring acrylic, but not from heat bending acrylic glas. I tried to softly grind with my dremel on a cut off piece. It only makes ugly scratches. Could very soft grinding paper be used and then polish it or something?

old thread which archieved quick. Still waiting for techthisoutmeow.

cutting out a fitting piece for a cheap safety goggle didn't work out well. So I simply made a paper model, cut the 1cm thick acrylic, cut out a triangle for the nose and drilled two holes on the side for the expander band. I think I could seal off the gap with silicone or something

I can actually see trough good enough. The bubbles are on both eyes on the very inner side + it is bent there and vision warps when I close on eye and look on this inner side (left eye closed, right eye looks central left and vice versa). If i'd put a second 1cm piece above it, I guess it would have actual weak balistic protective properties.

I settled for a bit less as innitially thought out. I won't put porcelain on all plates, my mask is 'wearable' but with the helmet it becomes almost cumbersome. If I'd put more on the helmet I probably couldn't comfortable wear both at the same time I noticed. Also bought a voice distorter and taped it on a painter mask. It works quite nice, but not together with the mask, because my voice isn't directly on the mic.

Finished armor will more likely to look like this.
>shins - full plate with one layer of porcelain + iron nailes for complete insanity
>upper legs - only the 18 layer backer
>front and back body plate - full plate with the second porcelain layout forming a 'T', extra protecting the spine, heart and lungs
>shoulders - only backer
>fore arms - like the shins, with iron nails too
I only need to make the shoulders and a dick plate eventually. All other pieces are backers. Taping on the shards then putting on the topper shouldn't take too long, adhering the straps neither.

Am a lazy fuck and could have been done 3 times over by now. Playing too much Fallout 2 lately

Cool project. I genuinely hope the chest armor is accurate to your chest.
I've been know to be a bit of a retard, but I believe to achieve a countour in acrylic that size requires a lot of heat and pressure. Pretty much in the form of specialty equipment. A piece like that would be manufactured with the curve already in it and not have originated from flat stock

>> No.2457886

yes my heat gun became too hot. 1cm is hella thick. And my car headlamp grinding+polishing kit is ready for pickup so hopefully I can remove these bubbles which formed on the surface and get it polished crystal clear again. from watching vids and gathering info, you need 800/1000/2000 wet sandpaper and grind slow to not melt it, then polishing paste with some cotton cloth. Plexiglas can easily be cleared from scratches this way.

would you think 1+1cm to reach 2 cm total is the same as something like 4x5cm in regards to ballistic protection? I meanaybe polycarbonate/plexiglas works different comparing it to other composites which require multiple layers. In stores atleast these windows appear to be made of one single plate?

>> No.2458310

>>2457886
I think lamination is fine when if it means better handling and less heat fuckery. It is not typical this thick of acrylic gets bend. You may try modulating heat as well. if you can preheat the piece in a gentle oven or radiator to control surface temp.
Found this document and it discusses how well the material insulates thus exterior overheats before the center and risk bubbling.

tongue anon, I can't deliver. Can I simply paint a ' P ' on it?

I reached a delicate point, contemplating about weight and desired effectiveness. Main goal is to have it stop typical 9mm loads and shrapnel, because if anything this seems realistic in all aspects, surviving, encountering and so on. As another wrote, every material becomes bullet proof at a certain amount, but then it becomes unwearable.

With my mask and helmet I'm at a limit. The weight can't be increased further for me to comfortable wear it (shouldn't have skipped neck day I know). I'm uncertain if the non porcelain plated armor pieces will achieve stopping common handgun ammunition. Maybe I should ask some other U. S. guntuber if he is willing to receive test panels by mail

Pistol rounds are easily blocked by fibers alone. Not sure about yours.
Ceramics are mostly added against rifle.
There are NIJ IV plates made from UHMWPE alone, for the benefit of floating.
Overprotection is very real. Besides weight that could make you carry more munition or more nimble, body surface are important to the range of motion, venting heat and sweat, perceiving sound and light, communication, carrying load and access to pouches/pockets, simply covering them make you lose access to them and remedies usually weight more. The more you have the more it take to take on and off to get ready. Quick detachment is also needed in case of drowning and receiving medical aid.
Therefore fully armored from head to toe only had very little occasion that they are justified. The standard is helmet and plate carriers, with or without side plates. Face shield, arm, legs and pelvis are novelties.
Why can't you shoot it yourself or let a buddie of yours?

>> No.2460236

I fully understand why ballistic protection is how it is. Mobillity beats protection for the most part, you only need to protect your vitals, a visor won't let you aim well, you already carry loads of gear and so on. You know whom this concept was developed for? The modern soldier. I am not a soldier, neither do I want to be one.

I'm afraid of what the future will bring, my worst nightmares would be to be unable to protect my wife and son from danger amongst other possibilities. We can't bug out, not only that I personnaly think bugging out is pointless if you have nowhere to run to from begin with, but it brings many other drawbacks you won't be able to face even against the slightest of what >>>/out/ requires of you to survive. I solo camped, I fished and made campfires, drank wild water I refined myself. I can't expect this from my family.

I have no guns, but under bad circumstances I would have to protect us from enemies, looters who do. There could even be no medical infrastructure for a period of time, let it be only 2 weeks of turmoil.

We will bunker down, I will be the guard of our shelter, clad in a knight's suit of ballistic armor. We won't run anywhere. Do you understand my philosophy?

Fortify your house and neighborhood then.
Protection is only half of the battle, even a long stick would significant improve the situation from casually getting fucked to looters consider with their life on the line.
Building shields for protection is 100x easier than crafting a suit of armor in stay at home considerations.

Or that a type of usually white packaging material combined with certain fuel liquids can be used to deter unwanted visitors, given some would lit such fluid.

But what if some asshole decides to bring a gun with him? I'd rather have some plate between my flesh and his projectiles.

First looters have number but not organization, each one of them is a self centered opportunist, prioritize his own loot, take his own risk, and generally don't bother with teamwork that requires consideration for others. All you need to do is hurt one and the rest went somewhere else.
Gangsters and the rest care less about immediate loot and their own lives, instead territorial control, so strike fear into the local is one of their fanatic goal.
Secondly, unless you are a master which still dies to crowd from time to time, you will have to use number and organization against number and organization of gangsters. Neighbors alike should form up together against huge threat when they still can.
Lastly your house entrance and other chokeholds are perfect place to consider less about being flanked. If you can get your neighbors together, the line would be extended outward to community entrances with more guys and props such as cars and large trash bin to barricade.
In the event of looters with gun running around, id make my own weapon and spray nasty chemicals and worry less about laws or empathy for the aggressor.

Unless OP has a big food supply (which he had to keep hidden from others) he and his family would have to leave their home to find enough to eat. In that case joining a bigger group and looting/scavenging together with them would be OP's best option.Farming would only be an option if OP/his group can defend his crops. alumina oxide, silica carbide, boron carbide are the best, if your going store bought porcelain works, just heavier and thicker. Stay away from brick, slate, and silica mortar based ceramic tiles, they suck

the fiberglass backer should be enough for 9mm already + porcelain give it more capability to withstand even more hits

that's on purpose, some are even rusty. I found these nails 4 years ago. There was a children outdoor project in a local park where they built wooden huts. These kids dropped good nails with every step, more straight ones then bend from sloppy hammering. While walking trough their little favela town with my young son, I gathered every nail I could find.

as it turns out, trying to work the nails in didn't work out at all. Tried to lay down the first glass cloth, the nails moved to much into any direction and I couldn't lay it down flat. Some went trough, some partially and some not the slightest and were covered by the cloth. Gave up after fumbling for some minutes and concluded I rather cut a single strip of mesh trough which I put the nails and then attach this piece of mesh on it's 4 corners to the armor via wires. Probably gonna drill 4 holes for this, or bolt on 4 ring bolts dunno yet. Something else I noticed, the fresh wet epoxy somewhat reacts with the ductape and makes it come loose once you lift the tape a bit and epoxy runs on the sticky side. It wont stick on anymore then.

Also cut some corners of my leg plates to wear them comfier. Smoothed out the front edge of my helmet so the visor will have a better fit, need to cut out the nose a bit further of the inner glas. Once my hinges are there I can place the visor on I hope. Gonna need polishing paste and anti fog spray, as they fog up, exhaled breath comes trough my mask's eye holes.

Lastly I realized that shoulder pauldrons are difficult in form. Have my upper legs gypsum print still, held it on my shoulder and did some simple movements, to my surprise only holding the arm straight up would press it against my neck. So I've to figure out some form that won't restrict my arm movement too much.

Christ, you're still at this? You're as bad as that idiot building his own boat.

Here's some tough love for you OP:
Your "armor" isn't going to stop a 9mm or any other pistol round, especially at close range.
If a looter shows up with a gun and you don't have a gun then you've already lost. The looter will get your stuff and simply kill you for the trouble.
Even if you managed to put all this shit on before the looter attacks you'll be so cumbersome that all the looter will have to do is tip you over and shoot you.
You KNOW this, deep down you realize how ridiculous this is. You're wasting all this time, money, and effort on a project that will imply get you killed if you're dumb enough to trust your life to it. You'd be better served fortifying your home and adding defenses if you're really worried about a happening.

I know you'll ignore this or post some rambling retarded justification for what you're doing but you're so autistic you simply won't listen to anyone else. At least I tried.

man. the inner piece of the visor broke. Wanted to cut out the nose further. after doing so I bend it by hand, heard cracks. Then broke it in half. Probably weakened by the first angled bent with my heatgun. I realized I don't need to cut out the nose at all, as mentioned tried to make a goggle at first.

Not only that but the idea to simply bolt multiple pieces of polycarbonate together is stupid. Rather adhere them. Gonna order 4mm poly. Heatbending in the oven over the curved back rest of our wooden chair. Maybe even only use a single 1cm piece of poly anyways. I've to ponder

some told me about liquid armor in #1. It's only theoretical.

We went to the Museum fünf Kontinente today in Munich. Quite funny, as we wanted to cross the street where the museum was on the other side, the Oktoberfest Umzug just so happened to march along. Stood there half an hour, once inside we came across an exponat of this crazy mofo
>pic rel
Puffer fish helmet, wooden shark teeth spear, armor made from coconut bast (dunno word) and women's hair.

In another aspect I find it quite interesting the need for humans to express some sort of tradition and culture, witnessing it 2022 right infront the museum live and then inside of it which contains hundreds of year old art. A waste of time manifested in useless details. Depictions of unmoving gods carved from lifeless stone. I realize why my god, the christian god, hates this so much. Art with real uses for the daily life become symbols of decadence and ultimately turn into parts of rituals which the people of their time and place have to obey for unknown reasons, whereas the initial real use of said objects is lost. You simply have to do this, sacrifice on this certain day for this trivial reason and so on. Funny enough that christianity suffers from this as well, yet 2000 years ago Jesus made it quite simple for everyone. Only fundamental rules and the believe in him are required to reach salvation. Salvation which if you compare it against what man made religions promise is simply the best outcome. I truly wonder what future will hold for this earth, Revelation is that, revealed in the bible, in text. I hope this current time period is exactly that for it would mean all suffering comes to an end soon. But what if not? It would mean I've to carry on further and fight trough this garbage, not only for myself but my family.

God, Jesus, everything turns to shit

Isn't the only advantage of a non-newtonian fluid that it conforms to your body when not struck? If the armour is comfortable enough when rigid, and has well-conforming firm padding to distribute shock, then it shouldn't be much worse than fluid-filled.

If you do go with oobleck though, add fluorescent blue food colouring so when you get shot the swat team think they've injured an alien. At this point raise your arms, splay your legs, and let loose your battlecry (duck whistle).

cut the front and back plate yesterday after 3 days of curing of the second ontop layer. The amount of dust is somewhat unsetteling. From my understanding, wet epoxy is highly dangerous, under no circumstances should it be cut or grinded (grount?). In addition the glass fibres itch like bitch. Usually I didn't care much of it, but yesterday was defintevely too much and strands poked me trough my gloves, still have a slight itchy sensation on my hands which almost faded away, should be gone by tomorrow. For future pieces, I think I will make the final cut from the unworked cloth with scissor and have it at the correct fit right away, instead of having so much overlay which soaks up epoxy and I have to cut it away with first my angle grinder and then finer cuts with the dremel. Dremels hate soft cloth and get stuck easily if ones not careful.

Maybe I've to sacrifice our vacuum cleaner to suck off that dust mess, I used the cleaner once in the beginning and the filters clogged up badly. After cleaning it and inserting a new dust bag, it gave off that epoxy smell in our home and I don't want those particles there. I always wear eye protection, corona leftover masks, gloves and working clothes all of which I clean or replace frequently. I think I don't want to make many much more armor pieces. Applying the epoxy layer for layer and seeing how it turns out is great fun, but the cutting part is the opposite of it, I dread it everytime.

I kindof dont want to add porcelain to the other pieces, gonna look up shooting statistics which include shot placement and judge from this information if its worth or not to add more.

lulz all this talk about blackouts makes me worried I can't use any power tools which require electricity ofc. Maybe I can finish armor pieces without drilling, cutting and grinding. Bought too much epoxy at the best value and also got a bit too much glas cloth leftover

couldn't find simple statistics. I guess most who are familiar with guns, be it police or criminals will aim for the upper center mass. head to a lesser extent and even less so pelvis, which is a tactic when facing armoured targets. But nowadays dick plates are more common no?

Oh well tomorrow I'll try to adhere the straps on the front/back, shins, forearms, upper legs. e6000 is mighty strong, my mask still holds flawlessy, even after washing it out a few times by now. now I think it will be like this, only mask, front, back and forearms will be 18 + porcelain + 6, all others consist of only the 18 layers. If I have restover glue I gonna stick the mesh strips with nails simply on, no drilling

I'd sugest this. get a batman costume that fits good on you, also it should come with good straps. Then build on it, I did so with the skateboard helmet, all other pieces so far are modelled on gypsum prints. 3a rating is easily achievable. In #1 I have everything posted about progress, saved it as pdf and pngs. Dunno how to post the entire thing.

I would think you'd need about 20m2 glass cloth, discussed this prior. Glass filament comes in various weights and weave patterns, what I did was to combine a tightly woven light weave and a heavy duty type called woven roving used mainly in boat repair. I calculated that a 18 layer patch sized 33cm x 33cm (bit larger than medium sized ballistic front plates, also the rolls come in either 1m or 1.2m so you can cut out 3 width wise without any loss) needs about 750 gram/0,75kg (also volume is almost the same so 0,75 litre) mixed epoxy resin with hardener. So about 500g resin + 250g hardener. You mix resin and hardener in a ratio of 100:50 up to 100:60 in either weight or volume. Never measured mixes perfectly, cured hard all the time. Usually buying epoxy on ebay, it comes with both fluids.

Innitially I looked up how cosplayers and furries build their suits as they have it all figured out. For adhering straps they suggest E6000, if you don't wanna bolt straps on that is.

I won't bombard you with youtube vids proofing that 15+ heavy glass filament layers with epoxy/polyester resin. Presonally I wrote to techthisoutmeow about my project and asked him to build a test panel like my build, one backer with 18 layers and one with additional household porcelain and the 6 layers topper. Still waiting for response video.

the second one. just calculated everything i bought for this project on ebay and came to 512€, this includes the dremel for 60€and some unnecessary garbage like the voice distorter. Cheapest epoxy goes for about 11€ per kg. light glas filament like 3€ per 1m2 and heavy 5€. Ugly porcelain is free.

I calculated the cost for a 18 layer 33cm x 33cm backer plate to be around 15€, if you can get the cheap industrial epoxy. 'art' epoxy is sold for 3 times higher prices per weight, also comes in way smaller unit quantities

oh well. Wanted to finally adhere straps to every armor piece. Ran almost completely out of E6000 and not only that but also it's container ripped open. So I could only put down the side straps of both front and back and 4 straps for both upper legs. I've only enough glue left for maybe one more piece.

The straps of the lower legs and arms will be bolted on I guess. This should make it way easier to affix the steel screen mesh trough which I will put the nails. Speaking about the nails, I placed them in a bowl with a water cholrine cleaner solution for them to rust faster. Partially looks, but also +17 poision dmg.

I think I gonna make a triangle crotch plate, then connect it with 2 straps and bolts to the breast armour. Shoulder armor would decrease my arm movement drastically, so I will maybe only make a small upper arm piece if anything. Then it should be done fod now, losing my ambition

man... Everything worked so well, adhered the straps on torso armor, cut 2 pieces from my old camping mat for padding, taped it on, wore armor. Then I tried out how strong the e6000 holds and with only a bit of strong pulling it came apart.

I think my fault was I wanted to stretch my glue out, so in the end, this singular tube of e6000 wasn't nearly enough, probably would need 4 more atleast for all straps. It's good adherement, but you gotta squirt it good.

2 options now, either epoxy or bolts. I think I gonna use bolts, epoxy becomes too stiff.

from asking around and gathering info, there seems only 3 options. Drill trough plate and connect straps. Adhere straps again. Sew a carrier and insert plate.

Since making it as cheap as possible, drilling 4 holes and connecting the straps with 4 bolts, washers and nuts seems the cheapest solution. E6000 is too expensive for what it is and sewing or atleast costumizing a plate carrier would also be expensive. My sewing machine can't even handle thick jeans. Adhering the straps with epoxy seems also a bad idea, it would probably rip at the very section where it's not epxoid. I even got some epoxy drops on one of my mask's straps from sloppy work, this tiny bit made it there stiff and almost brittle.

for goggles i would just pick up two sets of construction gogles, remove the rim and hot glue the rim together. and then put a layer of scratch resistant gorilla glass screen protector on the front and a water repelling phone protector screen on the inside.

are you also planning on building an weight bearing exoskeleton to wear with the armor so you keep you joints and tendons safe?
or even a elastic loaded one to cushion some of the weight while standing/walking?

> thats my current exoskeleton build. i'm gonna restructure the knee and torso for better stability soon.

for the face i would go with a more classic shape instead of a anatomic mask (ballistic jaw guard, large field of view gogles, impact cage on top)

some ventilation holes in the mask, with metal mesh on top, would help breathability with the mask.
heavy armor always needs to consider stamina, air, heat and comfort.

is the helmet hearing protection compatible?

i would recomend a neck cushion so impacts on the helmet or other accelerations can't overextend your neck.
