Likewise Ive owned a jack that had its seals fail before.

So yes, unironically.

Once you have the car on the jack stands, rock the car back and forth hard.
Youll realize how sturdy jackstands actually are and wont be too worried about it.

Leave the actual jack in place anyways, in case the jackstands fail
And when you take the tire off, put it under the car, in case both the jack and the stands fail.

Youll be fine though.

Fucking this. I worked on a lot of vehicles, but there was a day I was incredibly drunk working on my Jeep, and the habit of putting the tire underneath the axle when jacked saved my life. Was on a incline trying to fix one of my tires with the ass jacked up in the air, and the parking brake pulled. If you can see my mistake then you're not as retarded as I was. For some reason I went underneath the Jeep to take a look at something and it rolled back. That tire underneath the axle kept me from getting crushed.

If you're that scared of the car falling on you, get yourself a thick piece of something that's 2-3 cm/1 inch thicker than you and shove it underneath the car. This way, if the jack fails, it stops in that thing and you can wiggle your way out from underneath the car.
But honestly if you have the possibility, do the concrete hole in the ground thing. It's way safer and much more comfortable.

My brothers under god, it is not that big a deal. The photos you see of people killed or vehicles wrecked are just big time tools who don't do "safety" because it's "boring."

here's the veteran advice:

Don't use the jack as a stand and don't use something that splits or cracks as a stand. This means no cinder blocks and no framing timber. Don't crawl under a vehicle that's on a hill. Do not service a vehicle if the wheels are not chocked. And do not listen to retards on the internet who tell you that all this safety talk is for nerds.

Do use a jack to elevate the vehicle and do use a rated stand or a dense piece of hardwood (oak works well) positioned so that the vehicle will not split the wood along the grain. In ag and heavy equipment, we build little "cribs" out of oak blocks. Use wheel chocks regardless of whether your vehicle is parked on an incline (using a jack on only one side of a vehicle simulates an incline; unless you can jack all wheels off the ground evenly, you must use wheel chocks on at least two opposing wheels). Also, read your manual for the safest position for the jack and the safest position for a stand. If there is no advice, then check your vehicle's frame for arrows, dots, or cut outs that indicate where to jack from and where to place stands, then give the car a sturdy shove to see if it's going anywhere. Then get to work.

>> No.2454892

>>2454873
yeah, no shit, thats why I posted that to show what retarded advice it was.
Not to mention the fact that as was noted early on itt, ramps and grease pits alone don't help when you are doing work that requires removing the wheels/unloading the suspension.
Like doing brakes.

If this were true, I would never change my own oil.

Jiffy Lube and Valvoline both want $80 to throw synthetic into my Crown Vic, costs me <$15 to do it at home, takes 20 minutes. Bought a handful of filters online for <$2/ea shipped, buy oil in 6 gallon boxes for $50 when they're on sale.

If someone would do it for <$45 I'd break and start paying someone else to do it.
