Basic idea. about 20 layers of woven glass fabric laminated with epoxy. This already gives some level threeish ballistic protection. To further enhance it attach porcelain. Then some few more woven glass and epoxy ontop. This is the spalling protection catching fragments and containing the shattering ceramics. Also helps to keep the ceramics in place and should make them safe from damaging them by dropping the plate.

thick backer - porcelain mosaic - thin topper

My specific composition after doing some research and actually building it, having cost reduction as priority number 1. I calculated the cost for a 33cm x 33cm plate to be around 15€ if you get the porcelain wares for almost free, you can buy those cheap on fleamarkets. Uncoloured porcelain lets light shine trough, other earthenware not. 9 layers of light glass weaving + 9 layers of heavy weave. Placing one after another laminated with epoxy resin, so in total 18 layers for the backer. Then taped on broken household porcelain shards, atleast one mosaic layer, a second offset mosaic if weight allowes it (for my mask I only placed the second porcelain pieces on certain areas - mouth, forehead, cheeks - it weighs 1,5kg). Then 3 light + 3 heavy glass with epoxy ontop. Keeping in mind I can't shoot it for testing myself (am europoor noguns). I've asked the youtuber techthisoutmeow to make 2 testpanels, one only the backer and one the full build. He's the most prominent and active in this diy ballistic armor matter and my final inspiration to actually make body armor myself.

Dragon Skin armor is made of overlapping, two-inch wide high tensile strength ceramic discs, composed of silicon carbide ceramic matrices and laminates, that overlap like scale armor, encased in a fiberglass textile. Military testing revealed that the epoxy glue that held its disc plates together would come undone when subjected to high temperatures, causing the discs to delaminate and accumulate in the lower portion of the armor panel. They were designed with flexibillity in mind should've made a rigid plate instead.

The UHMWPE only provides Level III protection but the plate is set up in a way due to the matrix design that if the UHMWPE is damaged and/or stops a round in a specific area damage elsewhere will be very limited. While there is no known practical method to repair the UHMWPE, the ceramic bearings that do provide the overwhelming majority of the plate's protection can be replaced - this is nonetheless a great upgrade from normal monolithic ceramic plates.

further notes

Epoxy resin can be filled with different sized particles - end of https://youtu.be/6KjlyXKeo8c - to densifiy it.

Tempered steel can be fashioned into ballistic protection aswell, more complex and labour intensive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qrzdnammeog

the company line x makes a bed liner coating by the same name which is quite strong https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JOXrpCLCJg they also have a more specalised coating called paxcon used in bomb proofing buildings. But you can't simply buy these products.

hard and small steel pieces in pyramid shape can cause incoming projectiles to deflect or atleast change the impact to come in at a wider angle instead of it being straight.

qoute from the armor master about ceramics

>alumina oxide, silica carbide, boron carbide are the best, if your going store bought porcelain works, just heavier and thicker. Stay away from brick, slate, and silica mortar based ceramic tiles, they suck.

Have you tried shooting it yet? If you're noguns (I assume you are) you could try sending it to backyard ballistics or taofledermaus or one of those type channels for testing

If anything I want mine to have it stop multiple handgun shots, you know what criminals like to use. 9mm. If those fuckers decide to raid my family's bunker stash, they gonna get bonked to the head. Eventually I'll also affix rusty nails to my shin and forearm plates.

Make sure you have high density foam or something on the inside, and leave a gap. Even if the mask does completely stop a 9mm round, that energy has to go somewhere. Look at the welt a bullet leaves on somebody's ribs even after its stopped by a vest, and the pain it causes. It's like getting punched real hard in the face.

A concussion and/or a broken nose is preferable to getting shot, but try to avoid it.

I've placed leftover pads from a skateboard helmet on the inside of the mask. The nails are an idea I had imagining melee scenarios were my oponnent attempts to get a hold of me, grabing me by the arms, legs, neck and such. How would you counter such attack?
>inb4 guns
I don't have any. Maybe I got overwelmed by one or more, stronger than me raiders who are after my precious deenz. Guess what asshole you gonna get poked by my old nails. This is Jesus' revenge, evil will be nailed.

I've many wacky ideas, initially I wanted to paint the finished armor with flip flop effect car paint, to look like a post apocalyptic bug. But I had to stop this thought because this paint is quite expensive and I'm glad my wife lets me atleast buy mats and build this stupid shit without having to be nagged on all the time. Going for restaurants were I proclaimed afterwards it got expensive too helped a bit with that regard.

Another new idea of mine is to place a voice distorter inside a painters mask to sound like a replica soldier from f.e.a.r.

First look at the boob plate tomorrow <3
(we came home from lego land and I'm tired)

The guy wasn't wearing a vest, he was demonstrating a bullet proof coat. Because its suppose to be a daily use coat, it doesn't have the padding a vest has, so its definitely gonna leave a big ass mark.

That's only a consequence of soft armor. Assuming the hard armor doesn't deform, it'll have about the same amount of force as the recoil the guy shooting the bullet feels. These injuries from soft armor are because while it doesn't let the bullet pass through, it's still going to poke you with the bullet's force in a similarly small diameter.
For every force there is an equal and opposite reaction, and non-deforming hard armor can only feel as much force as the guy firing at you.

Compare the surface area of a normal ceramic or AR-500 plate to the surface area of this mask (the difference in area they can distribute the force over), and the sensitivity of objects like teeth and eyeballs, and I think you'll agree padding is a necessity even if OP's homemade layers work as intended.

This is probably the easiest most achievable thing to make at home with real stopping ability. You can get grinding media in all of the popular armor materials in different shapes, cheaply, and shipped to your door.
