Whats the absolute cheapest way to make an offroad sleeper trailer?

Those bougie "overland" trailers are going for 20 grand, which is absurd. All I need is a lightweight trailer I can pull behind my 4x4 rig on some mild trails and camp in. Just room to sleep, some storage and protection from the elements.

I thought about buying a cheap harbor freight utility trailer, and going to work with a welder. I'd throw on some bigger tires for ground clearance.

What do you mean by 4x4 rig? I'm assuming a quad but some country boys exclusively refer to their trucks as 4x4s, because it's something special to have 2 live axles I guess. If you can fab shit up you got a lot of options but what exactly are you hauling? Do you need to have space spot for fishing gear, or some rifles and a spot to tie a deer down to? Or tools? I have some ideas but no sense in saying a bunch of shit that doesn't apply to your needs.

Unless you find a used one cheap HF trailers are a meme, at least in the US, they had issues with DOT ratings and essentially don't sell them anymore.
Lowes and tractor supply new utility trailers are $800-1200 or so and the easiest cheap way to do a box would be to find a cheap used pickup camper and make it fit.
https://www.shoppok.com/allentown/a,38,314824,PICKUP-TRUCK-CAMPER----750--Philadelphia-.htm
From what ive seen the nicer expensive ones are that way in part because they have serious offroad suspension that cheap utility trailers don't , and not just beefed up springs or aftermarket shocks, either....some of them are almost like a rock crawler setup. You don't necessarily need all that stuff but if you off road you know stuff breaks so if you want to not worry or crawl at a snails pace and get stuck anyway that's the price you pay.

so you can move your vehicle quickly when you want/need to witout having to pack up a tent pitched on the roof, for one thing.
So you can leave your sleeping box set up and ready to crash in at your campsite and go places with just your vehicle whether its day trips to explore or fish or a trip to get more beer. If there's other people with you they can stay with the box or not and sleep or read or whatever, hard to do that in a tent on the roof.
So you can use the trailer with any vehicle with a trailer hitch and not just the ones your fruity roof tent works on.
Is conjuring up the benefits of a separate camp trailer really that hard to do?

Even after all that drivel, yes. Get a regular tent. Or a good mummy (sleeping) bag, that packs up quite fast. Or a hammock with a mosquito net.

Or look up teardrops trailers. Learn to weld, not effing hard.

Northern Tools has a great 5x8 knockdown utility trailer kit.
https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200612541_200612541
It would be a great base for a tear drop, and it could fit a queen sized mattress (60"x80").

So it's *not* hard to see why a trailer is a good option after all, you're just a knee-jerk contrarian dick swinger.

Yup I built mine with a northern tool 5x8 a format a nice mattress in there. Start looking up plans on teardrop trailer forums. I recommend keeping it simple and doing a square design and not a teardrop. I did what’s called a Benroy style but wish I kept it simpler by not having any curves in it. I used canvas cloth from harbor freight with a heavy coat of clue on both of sides. Then painted over that with outdoor paint. There is a lot of info out there to build your own. Mine was over built and designed to go off road I spent maybe 4 grand including the purchase of a table saw and welder over sized tires a bigger axle, solar, water pump etc to live off grid for awhile.

>random dickswinger on 4chan will signal his approval?
And it's not being sought with the trailer? He (or you) asked the cheapest way. The cheapest way is to not do it. If you have to ask the price, you can't afford it.

>So it's *not* hard to see why a trailer is a good option after all...
It really is hard. I hate towing a light load, especially on "mild trails."
Requirement was:
>Just room to sleep, some storage and protection from the elements.

Not via a trailer , which was the OPs primary requirement. Seems familiar, if taking one to know one is an indication, then I'll lick my wounds. Interesting how nobody caring can go both ways, no? However, because a false conclusion was drawn, I was invited to double down.

>Not via a trailer, which was the OPs primary requirement.
Your interpretation is that the trailer is the primary concern. To me, cost is his primary concern.

>You ignored that, asked why anyone would choose a trailer over a tent, ignored that too except to mock an honest answer (dick swinging)
Nope, didn't ask why ANYONE would. Got a big family? Get a trailer. Got a woman that won't pee in the woods? Get a trailer.
>and tried to impose your will and desires over the OP and others trying to help him and now pretend that you held firmly to what he asked for.
What? You are living in your own narrative. Was I using hypnosis? Neither those car tents or trailers are my desire.

The cheapest is to find a trailer on the side of the road or get one free of CL.

An inexpensive way would be to get an 8 foot V nose trailer and add a vent, a cot, a table, get some nylon netting to screen off the back while sleeping.

Just building a removable "mini house" that you can put on a standard trailer seems like a great idea, because you can still use the trailer for anything else. Maybe build it in a ways you can stow it in the trailer in a folded in position, so you dont get in trouble driving it around.

Just buy a nice tent. Campers are dumb. They're cumbersome, take up a bunch of space to store, need to keep up on maintenance on them so they don't rot and fall apart, need to have proper vehicles to tow them with the correct towing accessories on your vehicle. You don't have to deal with any of this crap with a tent.

I've made many pickup truck bed trailers after scrapping out trucks by cutting the frame rails just behind the front suspension, slitting the C-channel top and bottom near the bed then pressing the channels together and welding in a Reese socket so I can make the tongue (2" heavy wall box tubing) removable to deter theft.
Swap the truck axle for a trailer axle, bolt on and enjoy. A camper of course fits them.

In a camper, not very, even if they can smell food. They might snuffle around for a while, though. Bears usually attack hikers if they feel threatened, or they'll attack someone in a tent, like a woman in Montana last year, or that fucktard Treadwell. But thousands of people camp in trailers and RVs all over Alaska and lower states with grizzlies, and have no issues.

That's grizzlies. Black bears, won't happen. We used to have black bears around the camps when I was a kid, going on camping trips (bonus: i didn't get molested). No problem - and we were in tents.

Do you want to convert it permanently?
Id make a flipout bed, probably from the side. 3x7ft.
Then build a flipout table on the frontside, 4x~2ft, for eating/computer etc.
Maybe add bottom row shelves under the hinge side of the bed. That way you its not in the way when you want to get in bed, but accessable otherwise.
Depending on your climate, youll need a mini kitchen inside. You could just put a camping stove on you table, and store it under the bed if you dont need it.
