hi /diy/nosaurs,
a friend of mine has been really kind to me, lending me his old electic guitar for let me learn to play. it's a old ibanez rg, it was originally light blue but he didn't like it, so he scratched it to the wood, but he doesn't like it much even like that.

i would make him a surprise repainting his guitar, now a couple of questions:
wich kind of paint should i use?
any idea on the design (just one color, a stencil, something like that?)? i can use airbrush decently but i don't want to make something kitsch like flames or skull. something really classic and classy (he likes to play stuff like bob dylan or
eric clapton, extreme or queen, so no metal style themes)

TL;DR: painting a electric guitar, how?

any paint will work, just depends what look and feel you want at the end.

just be sure you know how to assemble and tune it before you start taking it apart
strings might be tricky for a first timer

You better ask him first
also
>heavy coats of paint will change the sound of your guitar

I mean if its a cheaper low end RG you might not be able to tell the difference, but there is a difference

go with a ibanez jem swirl paint job, just do a base coat of white, then from there all you need is borax, water, paint, and a bucket.

if you have no experience i recommend not messing with a guitar that isnt yours. theres too much that can go wrong, like getting punched in the face.
if you are capable of this try staining it and sealing it.

seems too 'metal' for the owners taste

I agree with doing nothing. I know I'd be upset if someone refinished one of my guitars.

However, if he gives you the okay, I would go for sanding it properly, staining it and finishing it with tung oil. (assuming the body is mahogany and not basswood)

>> No.221810

using the wrong paint can ruin the sound of the guitar, how a guitar sounds should come before its looks.
leave the guitar alone unless your a paint pro that knows what paints to use.
also have you thought of staining it, you could bring out the pattern of the grain and i think staining will have a lesser impact on the sound.

Everybody shut the fuck up. Paint will have no difference on the sound of an electric guitar, unless you paint over the pickups.
OP, here is what you do.
Get 2 cans of clear coat from a hard ware store. About $20
Remove everything: Pickups, Pick guard, Tuning pegs. Anything which you can't get off, tape over. Tape over the parts you don't want painted.
Sand the wood first. Get some fine grain (400 and 1000) sandpaper and the hardware store.
Paint whatever the fuck you want on it, making sure it's clean (By sanding) before you start. Also make sure it's even.
Once painted, follow the directions on the clear coat:
Coat, Dry overnight, Sand till it's even, repeat. Should do 4 or 5 coats. Use the 400 grit for sandpaper for this.
Leave it for 2 days after final coat, sand it to perfection with the 1000 grit.

>this guy
Paint (especially thick heavy paint) does make a significant change in tone.
To say otherwise is ignorance, or maybe you are the type to use active emgs in your guitar
