Any tips on getting really strait cuts with a handheld jigsaw? Also any general tips on working with one of these?

I'm trying to get into woodworking, but this is essentially all I have to cut with besides hacksaws.

1) get a fretsaw from stewmac.com
2)get an ordinary mitre box for a backsaw

I prefer to spend very little on specialized tools, OP, but it's just well worth the investment to buy a tool in this instance. Some mitre boxes come with back saws, they're pretty good to have for finer joinery, so you might as well get a backsaw as well.

Use something else as a guide, like a bar of square aluminum tube.
Or mask a line with tape, the very slowly cut along the line, being careful not to cut into the tape.
Or cut rough, then sand to your line.

use a hatchet, slide down edge of wood repeatedly, worked for me.

I seem to have misunderstood you, OP,

generally I just mark down the piece of wood with a ruler, a pencil, and tape, and just take it from there. Remember to always measure twice, and cut once.

Protip: when trying to smooth out the edges, get a jackplane. Seriously, those things are SO much quicker than sanding. Just use the jacplane first to get rid of the roughness, then sand it down more to get a better finish.

If you don't have to use a hacksaw, don't use a hacksaw. Something with a much wider (as in from the points of the teeth to the back of the blade, and not from side to side) will give you much, much more lateral stability.

get a straight long piece of wood to use as a guide, clamp it on each end to the board your are cutting. hold the jigsaw tight to that edge of molding, it's about the straightest cut you'll ever get with a jigsaw.

stewmac can fuck right off. They charge obscenely over the top, they market to hobbyists who have no idea how much tools actually cost.

This is what you want if you were looking to invest a little in tools, as i'm assuming you don't know how to sharpen stuff properly, it takes disposable blades. Not something you'd use if you can sharpen irons, but decent water/whetstones cost a lot of money and skill. (Rali planes is the make)

was just about to say that.

Or any plane (#3-#8) for that matter.

Dear God OP. Please tell me you're not responsible for butchering that Harmony uke and attaching the neck to that cigar box, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

There's nothing wrong with cigar box ukes, but once you go tearing apart vintage instruments, well, then we've got a problem.
