Well, I learned through her and my old roommate who was also a ceramicist. I'm not very good though. They both started in high school and got a degree in Visual Arts with an emphasis in Ceramics.

It's like any art though really. You just have to practice, the only difference is the price. Clay is cheap, so is glaze. Wheels and kilns are not cheap though. A decent wheel is several hundred dollars and Kilns are thousands. Plus you have to pay to run the kilns. If you live in a college artsy town your best bet is to take a class at the school and get to know the local potters. Art is about 50% art and 50% networking. My girlfriend has a studio with a wheel and tools. She fires her work in another local artist's kiln.
