Hey my mad /diy/entists

I'm stripping down a cheap ukulele. I'm currently still getting rid of the paint with the roughest sandpaper I could buy.

I plan on staining it, since it's made of fucking plywood (i know it's still going to sound pretty shit, but I want to do this more to see how it turns out appearance wise.

I have two main questions: first up, I can't get my sandpaper into the corner between the neck and the body. should I wait til I've stripped the rest off? I can't afford the paint stripper and shit, so it's all going to have to be manual. Also, do you have any general adivce? When I smooth off the body, what sort of grade sandpaper should I use etc etc.

My computer is not recognising the external media, so I can't put pics... so here is a general uke.

Stain plywood? Idunno about that, I seriously doubt it'll look good. If you want to do something that's got a little more depth in appearance than painting, slap some spray laquer on that shit.

Also, paint stripper is only, like, 10 bucks for a quart, which is plenty. Here's the real shit: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202247418/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&am

If you still wanna sand, 60 > 120 > 220, and the 320 if you want super smooth.

yeah, i can get paint remover for eioght bucks, but honestly i have about six dollars for the next week, and an electricity bill to pay next week. I'll have a look into how much the spray laquer will cost around here :)

use steel wool to get into little cunthair crevices

when you are sanding wood, first use something mucho rough like 50 and then work your way up to a finer grit. the progression i use is

36 > 60 > 100 > 150 > 220 > 320 > 400 > 600 > 1200 > 200 > buff

but that's to get a mirror finish and you probably don't give a shit about that so you can stop at probably 220. or 100, even, depending on just how ghetto you are.

Fair enough, and if you've got the sandpaper lying around go for it. It can definitely be done, with a liberal application of elbow grease. And you won't fuck it up, so, no harm done.

oooh! steel wool, thanks! I've got a wad of it in the kitchen. I'm using 40 to start, and a sheet of sandpaper is like 90c. I wouldn't mind trying for that sort of finish, again, mainly just to see how it goes. Thanks!

i'm kind of enjoying spending the time on this - i know paint stripper is way easier, but it's fun this way :)
