maybe turn it inside out and use iron on hem tape to attach a compartment inside? Anything sizable will really stick out though regardless of what kind of pocket you use, just a property of fabric.

If the backpack has back pads. Remove the foam from them and fill it with the "sand". Otherwise just rip the liner and sew it back up or use velcro.
You can't over pack it though or it'll be to obvious... so I've been told.
