Need a plunger design that goes into a hole for about 4 inches deep with a little over 5 lbs. Gonna connect a stepper motor to it (or whatever gives good control) and the plunger has to fully exit the hole on the way back out (super slow). The whole thing is gonna be like 80% 3d printed so you can go crazy with the shapes and mount to wherever "ok" is on the pic. I need this done by next week or my boss at Raytheon is gonna have my ass.

I just copy off smarter people. I was thinking of the cam idea. but in the space allowed i didnt have much mechanical advantage. And you cant have a worm drive + cam lobe unless you put another 90 degrees force hangulation. Was hoping for .... oops got bored.

If there's not enough clearance above the hole you can transfer the direction of the motion. For example, if you uses a plate with a diagonal slot cut in it that had a bearing riding in it connected to the plunger, you could use side-to-side motion to make the plunger move up and down.

Yeah. i considered the linear actuator, but I need to stack these machine units, so having a big fucking dong sticking from the top of the highest point is a space sacrifice. But ultimately i think i have to go with a linear actuator. :(
