They must be a volunteer department or some other no-fucks-given department as all major departments will send search FFs in regardless of building materials, assuming the entire building isn't burnt down yet. If anything they're not necessarily concerned about the glue and binders from OSB/plywood being a toxicity issue (remember: FFs have SCBAs/air cylinders), however those kinds of structural pieces tend to fail first because of that glue/binder melting apart so that could alter their plans to enter depending on involvement.

I don't understand the hate OSB gets on /diy/.

OSB is stronger than plywood in structural applications. Yes it can de-laminate and weaken with moisture, but so can any plywood that you would normally use otherwise. As long as a proper moisture barrier is applied over it and you have half-decent labor installing it, it will last just as long as plywood. Plywood also warps much easier than OSB, making it harder to work with than OSB.

In general, for general roofing applications or high moisture, use treated plywood at least 5/8" thick. Otherwise, for shear walls and diaphragms, OSB is stronger per inch of thickness.

probably because its misused alot, or done wrong by i.e. missing the barrier, but because its cheap its everywhere, and results are abonimations such as >>2000326 >>2001459

it has it uses, but you dont need to over do it, even europeans use it alot despite them memeing the burgers here, but mainly for interior cladding of non-bearing walls, or floors, sometimes outer walls with barriers (or without, and you know directly that some dipshit made that themselves)

Those "abominations" aren't even really terrible at all. Both of them would not be exposed once construction is done. Also:

- The roof I-joists shown use OSB webs for the same reasons I described - in that it is stronger per inch of thickness. you can also get these i-joists treated for fire resistance if you are want to argue the point of them being "more flammable" than normal wood joists
- The Wall studs in that example are actually LSL (laminated strand lumber), not OSB. Similar product, but stronger for certain use cases. This stuff is used for engineered studs that can span large heights of 13-17 feet for high-ceiling applications that are popular in larger homes. you would not be able to get the same strength or deflection for an exterior wall with normal lumber at those heights.

Posting in this epic thread.

Love me some OSB. Back in 2014'ish I made an OSB bedroom-set based on the industrial trends at the time. The set included a height-adjustable entertainment console, height-adjustable desk, twin bed frame, night-stand, rolling clothes-rack and a multi-use side-table out of the scraps. Really a unique set, nothing quite like it.

Almost entirely OSB with one very nice piece of maple plywood and then doused in polyurethane. I will say that the polyurethane coating has proved to be surprisingly resilient and a nicely sanded piece of OSB is kind of a cool look. I remember buying full 4x8 sheets of OSB for like $7-$13 each, which made for a very cheap build. Planned it all out in Sketchup. Didn't know anything about construction at the time so my dad helped me rip everything down and went at it with a sander, a brad-gun, and a bunch of glue. Very interesting looking back at my work after becoming a finish carpenter several years later... sometimes our past selves can be kind of surprising.

The clothes-rack featured a custom, copper pipe hook-set along with polished iron pipe (Dad cut the pipe and welded it for me); probably my favorite piece. For the height-adjustable desk and console I used aluminum T-slot bars on each side along with a high-extension jack underneath. My plan was to use a drill to raise and lower the jack, but in the end the desk was a little too heavy, a little off-balance and subsequently didn't have the proper support for that particular function; although I could still raise and lower it manually (which was fine).

Fast forward to 2020 and I've pulled it out of storage. The whole set has held up quite well over the years; I am still quite pleased with it. Looking forward to the modifications I can make. Currently eyeing high-end contact paper you can buy on Amazon, might be kind of cool to mess with that stuff and I think it would work well on OSB.

That's my contribution. I'm done rambling now.

>stronger per inch of thickness
For how long?
We know how wood changes over time (it doesn't change much if kept dry), but do we know what happens to whatever adhesive blend is being used in that particular piece of OSB? Will it turn brittle? Will it lose its adhesive strength? Would you gamble your roof on it?

OSB is actually good for roofing if you're not in a temperate climate. When you have a leak with traditional plywood you can rot and de-lamininate the entire sheet where as OSB will have a much smaller and circular water spot that you can cut out and replace. Cant tell yiu how many times I've seen multiple sheets of ply rotted because there was a leak near the top ofcthe roof.
