I've carried this leatherman for about 6 years now.
I have only ever used the knife and little saw to success. Knife opens packages as well as any knife would. The saw as come in handy a few times but I honestly only used it because I was too lazy to just go get a real saw.

Everything else on it? Either failed or was so shit I just stopped and went to get a real tool.

I think I've used the semi-needle nose pillars maybe twice, I guess they work well enough.
As for the "jaws" I have never used those, nor any style of pliers like pic related before. I have honestly no idea when you would ever use these style of pliers over channel locks or similar tools.

As far as bit driver goes, I don't know that model. But if using the Philips or standard bit on my leatherman are to go by, it would be awful due to the horribly ergonomic shape of the leatherman. Anything tightly threaded in is going to be a bitch to get off with a leatherman.

The bit drivers aren't great, but when you're fucked and don't have any real tools you've sort of got to go with what you've got

I have a multitool and I don't carry it often but i have carried it "just in case" instead of my entire toolbox and it has proved useful for very basic functions. It's nice to have pliers, wirecutters, a knife, a saw, a flat and a philips driver, bottle opener, and scissors that will all fit in one hand and carries lightweight and unobtrusively on a belt clip. Don't get me wrong every time I've used it I would have VASTLY PREFERRED the "real" version of whatever tool(s) I used on the multi, but the point is I had the multitool when I didn't have the real tool(s) available.

>why use slip joint over groove joint

Access; smaller overall and can grab straight-on while groove joints typically require you to grip from an angle. Under ideal conditions yes there is a lot of redundancy or even inferiority (grooves will open wider and grip MUCH harder) but this is kind of like asking why you'd want to own a set of sockets when groove joint pliers can adjust to all the same sizes.

The knife would be as usable as a knife with a blade as small as that. Rope bracelets aren't particularly useful most of the time, but it's a method of storing cord. A knife clasp bracket? Silly, perhaps, but it serves it's purpose of having a blade and rope. I don't really see how it competes with the tread on retard factor.

A couple more candidates..:

Pic related is the 2nd version. The first one came out a few years back with NiCd batteries, released by a bunch of chinks. Now it’s back on Kickstarter, they hired a couple American marketing guys to act as the face of the company, hoping people don’t tie them to the failed green NiCd version before they raise some cash on Kickstarter.

Actually the fundraiser might be done now. You can still find the Amazon listing with horrible reviews of the old one. I forget the name of the old company, but the new one is the DOER, they made a fancy video with the couple American guys but then you read the company website and see it’s a total scam. Yes, it was "american steel" vs german or japanese or chinese steel. This included tooling like saw blades and drill bits and everything else with different levels of carbon and tool steels.

Globalization has greatly changed that nowadays and your choices are vast, people are now far more into the actual metalurgy as technology progresses, dont act like its a thing.

Whats the point in getting mad that people care intensely about metallurgy and heat treatments, or that they like to collect things?
If you want cheap beater knives, then buy cheap beater knives and dont go looking at the forums which love bleeding edge technology.

>>1984516
There is some truth to that.
Its cheap and easy to grab something like D2 where you can heat treat it and manufacture your form from it easily in the garage.
The people using mystery steel and other complete junk steels are wasting their time. Using a shitty steel doesnt make the process harder, it just makes your end product unusable.

>154cm and s30v
I still rate those as a fairly premium steel, at least for those of us doing low volume production its quite an expensive base material to make a knife out of and not really something the home beater can heat treat in a propane forge without any level of accuracy.
People can whack on anything and make knives out of it for practice, personal use and what not, but when you're moving into selling them at not inconsiderable prices to other people you do need to have a bit of leeway in terms of knowing what you're making, being able to consistently reproduce those results and deliver something to them which 'is what it says it is' so they're also confident in your product. For the big manufacturers though, its even more a purely industrial process involving tonnes of steel, 1000's of customers and a good percentage of those customers are somewhere in the borderline retarded to not very bright spectrum and will destroy anything nice- then of course its destructive to the company as some spastic manages to snap off one of their knives on twitter or facebook because they're batoning through a frozen chicken with a high hardness knife.

Its not that the company (or knife maker) did a bad job, but they managed to find the special kind of tool user you wouldn't trust with a crowbar, let alone a sharp object, then after 50-100k re-tweets your company now looks like a cunt if they don't replace it for free

I've had several multi-tools and I have to say Leatherman is a superior brand.. it's the only brand I can actually grip the pliers and not kill my hand, and it's thinner than the chink shit. I personality miss the PST2, that had nice scissors and a diamond groove file for sharpening other tools (also, the super thin regular screwdriver/punch was good for picking cheap locks. shhhh), but besides those my current tool (Rebar) is rather comparable. Trading in the hook/descaler for a second knife (one traditional pocketknife and the other a sharp edge serrated) seemed redundant at first, but I found over the few years I've had it I do use both, when I've never used a descaler.

I agree with other anons, in most cases it falls between having the "real" tool and muh limp dick, but there are exceptions. For example, I can position the handle in a L shape, which allows me to push into a screw head and have leverage for twisting, so sometimes I find the letterman more useful than even the "real" tool, though those moments do tend to be few and far between.

EPA and overpaid engineers are to blame for these pieces of shit. I almost blinded myself with 2 stroke because these stupid fuckers don't let the pressure out unless gas comes out with it and it overfilled my leafblowers tank and gushed out. I have no choice but to use these retarded things because I own a business and it's regulated, so if you too can't put a regular nozzle on your gas can try these babies out. Only newer type gas can I like, it stop pouring the gas automatically when the tank fill line hits the nozzle and you can press the button anytime and vents out the button in the back instead of the nozzle itself.

Well there’s your problem.

Knife makers love using goofy hardware, my guess is they got lots of warranty returns with mangled hardware and the service department didn’t enjoy removing metric hex screws that were fucked by an owner with a cheap half rounded SAE hex key. Or the owner takes it apart, loses parts or assembles the thing poorly, and sends it to the warranty department because shit doesn’t open and close properly anymore.

You can’t generally service a tool by using that same tool, chicken or egg.

These days spark plugs (for the most part) come pregapped. Going a bit further, many "special" plugs (e.g. iridium) specifically say not to regap as it can damage electrodes or their coatings.

If you're using standard plugs, it is still good to check the gap, but I too have noticed it has not been necessary to regap anything in at least a decade; the pregap has been good.

I guess, but the systems as a whole are more efficient. Some of the first types of distributorless ignitions are still used in modern design and spark every time the piston is on the upstroke. Twice as often as needed as they spark during exhaust for no reason other than crankshaft position. They stay clean but the gap gets wide from molecular transfer or magic.
>>1994360
I still like you alright. It has been a non-issue for decades because a plug cost about the same as a gallon of gas but, that's getting expensive. People may go back to cleaning instead of throwing away perfectly serviceable shit.

>>1995483
It's less about the materials and more about the modern ignition systems. The electronic coil or CDI systems spark in excess of 100kv and usually spark in pairs (in some types, if you remove the cables off the same coil pair, the spark will jump the terminals). It may seem counterintuitive at first, but the high voltage helps reduce wear and prolong the spark plugs.

I’m pretty sure it’s people with transverse V6’s and boxer engines that don’t give a fuck about service or replacement, they would rather leave those cunts in forver. Iridium FTW. Also aluminum threads, lots of heat cycles and many years means fun times.

I also have never gapped a plug because if the engine is running rough and there’s any chance it could be a bad plug, they’re so cheap that I buy new ones to rule them out. Most of the time the plugs are fine, and if the plugs are fucked up, it’s a result of a different issue.
