1989391 No.1989391 [Reply] [Original]

Post stories of when your vehicle broke down in awful conditions and you were able to fix it with tools on hand and drive it home. Situations like offroading on trails, no service, hours from home, less than ideal tools, in wilderness areas etc. I can start, but mine isn't that impressive

>Day 1 on week long road trip up the Appalachian mtns sightseeing, shooting guns a s camping
>About 3 hrs from home
>Extremely rural mountain terrain of virginia
>No service
>Nearest actual town with an autozone is 30 miles away
>Driving my 05 4x4 manual trans ford ranger
>Pull over to hop in river and eat lunch
>Notice my back wheel smoking severely
>Horrific chemical smell
>try and limp it up the road to the nearest town
>Smoke gets worse and worse to the point of us fearing for a fire
>Pull over
>Suspect rear drum has seized
>Nobody in group has ever done drum brakes before or have a very strong understanding of how they work
>Heregoesnothing.gif
>Jack it up off the ground with emergency jack
>Remove tire
>Drum is burning fucking hot
>Try and remove drum
>Completely seized
>Retrieve BFH (Bigass fuckin hammer) from emergency toolbox
>Engage hammer
>Beat the drum off the shoes
>Part of the shoe pad came off and welded itself to another part of the pad to create a high spot
>Take a chisel + BFH and beat the shit outta the pad at that part to remove that section of shoe
>Replace drum
>Replace wheel
>Continue on our road trip
>Replace rear drums when I get home

Once I watched a YouTube video I'm fairly certain I could have done the whole brake job on the side of the highway, but without 4g + parts this would have been impossible. Oh and a friendly reminder that here at /diy/, we do NOT dial Triple A under any circumstances unless all other options have been exhausted

Was driving home with my mom from out of town. Flat tire, pulled over, turns out the tire iron in the trunk was too big for our lug nuts. I saw a soda can on the side of the road, got a strip of aluminum from it, and wrapped it inside of the tire iron so that it fit the lug nut.

Driving to work in the morning in my 65 F100 that was about 40 years old at the time, and the motor abruptly stops with me in the fast lane of 15-501 heading into Chapel Hill rush hour hell traffic, but somehow I was able to coast through the right lane onto the narrow shoulder. The motor looked ok, so I pulled the distributor cap, and I don't know why, but I touched the rotor and it spun freely. So I pulled the distributor, and thank god the gear didn't fall down into the engine, because the pin had sheared. I fixed it with a finishing nail, and timed it by eyeball and sound and got to work about an hour late.

The punchline is that the original distributor had lasted about 39 years except for the advance diaphram, so I bought a rebuilt one, and that's the one that died within a year. After I put a proper pin in it ran until I junked it this year. Kinda hard to put a truck down that you've owned since 1978.

Only tool I had was one small crescent wrench and a jug of coolant. Swapped the entire radiator on the side of the road, in the dark, and saved enough coolant to make it home.

>little warehouse is in the bottom floor of the terminal, requires security check of person and vehicle, escort, and backing in between a few JetBlue planes
>last couple pallets, liftgate starts moving slow, get the last pallet off and the liftgate dies in the down position on the tarmac
>look at the trailer, then the connections, shortly after realize that this tractor doesn’t have an outlet for the liftgate, somebody hooked it up a couple days before and ran the liftgate off the trailer batteries all day and they stuck the tractor side of the cable in the little carrier so it looked like all the cables were connected
>ponder my situation, it’s going to be all day with my trailer parked on the tarmac because of all the security BS and what it would take to get another tractor over there before the Airbus needed to pull out
>hop in cab and think, see old charging harness from computer that used to be installed in there
>3x thinner wires, hack off insulation on either end, tie wires together so I have slightly more copper thay won’t burn up so quickly
>loosen + clamp on truck battery, jam one end of wire harness in there
>grab liftgate power cable to trailer, ham other end of witing harness in the hole (trailer is grounded already, only one pin)
>wait a few minutes, then a couple more so trailer batteries have some charge and 3x thin wires don’t turn into smoke when I hit the liftgate

The cars still operate the same, you can try and patch a coolant line or nig rig whatever. Maybe keep a bluetooth scan tool in the car so if your dash lights up, you can check to see if it’s a real issue or bullshit.

The biggest concern would be stuff like this >>1989947 I had a similar situation where a little bushing on the shift linkage crumbled and the car was stuck in reverse after pulling out of a parking spot and I pulled apart the center console and stuck the little arm back on so I could get home. If it were a push button trans and the software started to bug out or some component on the circuit board fried, I’m not sure what you could do. Maybe fuel injection was the point where computers became more essential and certain problems would leave you stranded for certain.

Also so many cars these days come with 2 years of roadside assistance instead of a spare tire, that doesn’t help.

Its difficult to determine.
Any old 350 sbc engine would be super easy to wrench on the roadside however your chances of something happening requiring you to have to do roadside work are increased (depending on the miles on that engine) I mean if you pay attention to life, you'd check all the right things before going on a trip like that.
Whereas a 1zz-fe engine would likely not cause you any major issues, it would be slightly more involved to wrench on the roadside.
Also keep in mind, wrenching on one bank of cylinders its much easier than two.
The less moving and electronic parts the better.

If I were preparing for a trip with an SBC, I'd swap out the timing chain/belt for timing gears, slide in a fresh set of cams, springs and lifters. Replace the waterpump, thermostat and radiator, fill 'er with fresh coolant and oil, check all lines and hoses for aging and replace as necessary, then proceed on my trip. Same would go for the 1zz engine minus the cams, lifters and springs (1zz is more reliable there)
As for the rest of the vehicle, take a spare tire AND a can of fix a flat. Inspect the axel boots know if your brakes need replacing.

Pic related is a 5VZfe, also reliable and ready

I think if youre 400 miles deep into the forest and that far from civilization, you wont give a fuck about how sloppy or clean an emergency repair is.
The reason I advise both a tire and fix a flat, is because things can go wrong more than once and youll want to keep that spare handy for worst case scenario. If the breach is small enough to fix the flat, then save your spare for a full blown tear in the tire.

Im here to tell you all im an idiot. I am also drunk. Yesterday I was driving down the highway to my parents house to grab some shit. and I made it about 80% of the way when I heard a metal thunk-thunk-thunk noise from somewhere within my engine. I figured i knocked a rock up from the road (even though I didnt see any rocks).

well, 5 minutes later my oil light came on. for those who arent well versed, this light is your "oh shit, youve got 20 seconds to turn off your engine, tops" light. looks like one of those old timey oil things, i dont care. Well, I remembered some reddit post that said to pull over and turn off the engine, and did so. I then spent the next 45 minutes waiting for some family to give me a tow.

You know what the problem was? not a hole in the oil pan, only people who are good at maintenance get one of those. no, I had a loose oil pan drain bolt. the whole bolt fell out. no joke, the bolt (drain plug) itself fell out due to my shit ability to tighten things. again i posted this so that yall could shit on me, remember?

Anyways so i got a tow from some family, and they also had an oil plug. I put the plug inyself and filled the engine up with oil, and thank the fucking lord the car started up with no issues.

sorry i shitted up your post with a story that didnt really fit the bill but I wanted to tell somebody how dumb I am. Yesterday was a roller coaster of emotion.

At least you caught it and didn’t blow the engine.

My neighbor, MILF, got a brand new Ferd Explorer a couple years ago. The day she gets it home, she’s driving and the oil light comes on. Boomer neighbor has 2 quarts of oil in his garage, pours it in, tells her she’s good to go. A couple hours later, MIlF is running errands, oil light, keeps driving because they poured 2 quarts in so it’s obviously good, car seizes in the middle of the road.

Never heard the full story, but obviously some bad leak from the factory, next day she had a different color Explorer in the driveway.

Rusted brake line burst while I was on the highway, 100 miles from home, it was 5pm and no mechanic wanted to help me same day. Limped to AutoZone. Bought brake fluid and filled the reservoir up so I could get maybe one good panic brake by pumping it. Used manual trans / engine braking to drive the 100 miles home all gas no brakes. I missed 2 exits because I couldn't slow the car down enough to safely turn off the highway. Thankfully never had to stop the whole time I was on the highway. It worked out but I would not ever recommend it or do it again. My ass was puckered the whole drive and knuckles were white from gripping the wheel so hard. Got home and just sat down for a while in silence and made a good burger to appreciate still being alive.

I had actually just replaced the front lines and thought the rear was fine. Bought the car off a guy that was driving it but I had to get the lines done for a safety.
Anyways, take a quick look, dripping fluid from above the crossmember where I cant even see the line. Mostly backroads to work, early morning, won't get home until late.
20 miles using the engine to slow down and the parking brake to stop with that last pump of the brakes in reserve. Ended up doing the rear brakes when I got home

So I cant make it to work the next day but I got a car lined up to be bought that morning and I was back on the road by noon that day. So I have to get rid of this car now, you may ask why I didn't just tow it to the scrap? Well I had just bought brand new winter tires and the wheels will fit my car, infact it was basically the same car, 03 monte carlo out, 06 impala in. So this car is sitting around and I can get twice as much for it if I drop it off, scrapyard is only like 3km away so I think I can make it, call up my dad to follow in the truck, he suggests putting some oil in to make the trip but I decide against it, this fucker is loud now and the last thing I need is a bunch of smoke too, plus there's no insurance on it now. Story starts up where it left off

At this point there was a guy that was accross from me turning left, he turns and pulls over to get out to check on me, he said he could see flames, looking head on like that I can only imagine he can see the combustion cycle, fucking block must be cracked or something. Tell him its fine, just going to the scrap anyway which is now less than a km away

Wasn't the first flat tire incident with that car in a short span of time, nor the last. It really just needed a new set of tires I think, and we ended up replacing them not long thereafter. I've got a few more similar stories I could share if there's any interest.

My neighbour got a call one day, his wife was broken down for some reason. So he goes to pick her up and bring her to work. Cant remember if he got it towed or did something on the side of the road but he's telling us about it the next day.

Now this guy is a Supreme bullshitter so keep that in mind. He had just done the brakes and apparently didn't tighten the slide pins down, one of them worked loose and got caught in the wheel. Tjink about that for a minute. First off his story was he almost killed his wife who had just got off the highway, why would you even admit that? Second and slide pins ive ever seen are on the inside of the wheel, not facing outside so I'm not sure how he fucked up but it was in such a spectacular way that he felt the need to make up an embarrassing and completely unbelievable story instead of just keeping quiet about it

This happens to me at least once a year at work. The trucks get started at least 25 times a day, so those starters don’t last very long, or the bolts loosen up on them. Always fun getting covered in grease and dirt trying to get under there, plus they all have idle shutoffs so you will probably be under there a couple more times before the day is over.

Had the same happen on a loaner once the brake pad got so worn down it fell out of the claw. Then it was just the caliper pushing on the brake pad untill it all wore down and leaked fluid everywhere. Cue no brakes. I stopped had a look around took me a while to figure it all out. Sorry second question, my first car was an 03 impala, be leaf. I researched reliable motors and ended up with that because the 3800 stood out, 5 years out of that car before I replaced it with an 03 monte carlo, thats the problem car. It was an emergency replacement and cheap and I could transfer some parts, front sway bar, front brakes, wheels. It had the intake go then blew up a month later and I bought an 06 impala, kept my winter tires and have been happy ever since. Its actually spotless and only 145k or something now. The 3900 is known for some gasket issues but I can deal with it. The handle wonderfully and have food power economy and space, I love them

Answering both questions here, yes it was a cost thing. Ive always joked that I can find parts for these things at the side of the road. As a new driver I wanted a common car, theres a very good upick near me and ive replaced alot of shit for cheap over the years. The 3800 is really easy to work on and I learned alot working on beaters this way and I regret nothing. When it comes to sway bars breaks and tires they were replaced recently, the swaybar was an upgraded solid part, and everything else was better than what was on that monte that had alot of issues including the breaks in >>1991467
Not a strategy I would recommend but success came from familiarity and experience so I stuck with it. Ive never had a car payment in 12 years and ive spent probably s grand a year sans insurance and gas to drive wherever I want

On the way out of a camping trip my buddies 2wd truck got stuck in a little shallow creek bed. You had to cross the creek to get to the camp site, and every one that crossed it made it no problem including the 2wd. We had a 4x4 we could have used to push it out, but the creek crossing was an extremely tiny lane and he was the last out so we couldn't get back behind him. In retrospect this was retarded, but he made it over it once easily. We had 3 light duty tie down straps and one heavy duty one. I tried to pull him out while everyone pushed w the heavy duty strap and it ripped. Then we tried to double it up and if ripped again. A friend of mine is a carpenter who had all his tools on hand and he tore down his camper shell cot platform to make recover boards. We put them under his rear tires and I braided the light straps, doubled those and then braided that with the destroyed heavy duty strap tied back together. The trucks were nearly bumper to bumper. With everyone pushing, the recovery boards and the braided straps we were able to pull him out. That saved an extremely long drive to civilization to get actual straps which would have killed an entire day of the trip. If you go camping all the time and spend lots of time off-road, the extra 1k for the 4x4 model is definitely worth it. Also always carry recovery equipment when driving into the wilderness. Learned a lesson that day

Only ever really "broke down" 4 times, all of them in my old van within a span of a month, back when spending 50 euros was a lot of money to me.

Going down a bad road and suddenly lost all drive.
Turns out the key holding the slip yoke bounced out and the drive shaft followed.
Put JBWeld on the splines, waited 2 hours, and drove home.

Woke up to a spongy brake pedal and fluid around the wheel.
Clamped the flexhose with vice grips, and replaced the wheel cylinder later.

Ran out of diesel a few km from the pump and just poured about 3l of 15w40 in the tank.
Week later 2 of the injectors start sticking, so I pull them out and soak the nozzle in mineral spirit and they cleared up.

Replaced the fuel filter after I ran it dry of diesel, but forgot to pull the O-ring out of the housing.
Couple of days later air got into the system and wouldn't start and I drained the battery trying to prime it.
A city construction crew towed me half a km until I got it running again.

depends on the vehicle. Most malfunctions that I can think of wouldn't be fixable in a 9th gen civic wouldn't be fixable in a late 90's ranger. Injectors are much less of a pain than carburetors. most common things like damage to fluid/vacuum lines would be the same for the most part, perhaps a bit more inaccessible in the honda. Manual gearboxes on both, so I guess it ultimately may come down to transmission. I've heard some auto trans can just spazz out and malfunction with perfectly working components(early ford dct's, BMW) sometimes requiring dealership tools. A friend's ram truck occasionally bluescreens. It's hilarious.

I can understand pinching the flex hose but I wouldn't do it unless I was completely fucked and desu i didn't think a fuel system could handle motor oil, thats probably why the pump burnt out and definitely why the injectors got gummed up and I also don't get why tou had a harder time bleeding actual fuel but didn't have a problem with the oil

not really a roadside repair, but I'll share a tale from my college days
>driving out in the middle of nowhere at night
>cross railroad tracks a little too fast, probably 40mph+
>didn't see slight hill at beginning of tracks
>everything inside my car levitates for a split second as I manage to go slightly airborne
>bottom out extremely hard
>somehow manage to make it back to my dorm that was 10+ miles away(still have no clue how)
>wake up next morning with a gigantic pool of red underneath my car in the parking lot
>tranny won't shift into any gears
>check under car
>A huge hole has appeared in my transmission oil pan
>poor collegefag at the time, only basic tools and basic supplies
>roll car into another parking spot so nobody knows it was me that made the 40 foot wide shit streak in the brand new parking lot
>armed with nothing but a basic socket set and a small scissor jack I stretch armstrong my hand underneath the car to undo all 15 or so bolts from the pan
>bring pan inside my dorm and try to wash off as much grease as possible from the pan in the bathroom sink after carefully removing the brittle as fuck cork gasket
>only supplies to fill this hole: a partially used pack of JB weld that has been sitting in the trunk for years
>mix up super thick almost chunky JB weld
>hole is so fucking massive I have no way of supporting the shit while it dries
>open note book and begin tearing paper off into little strips to act as a paper mache filler
>manage to make an ugly as fuck big blob of gray JB and white paper that can support itself while it dries
>rip up a mcdonalds burger wrapper and throw it in for good measure
>JB finally set enough after a couple hours to attempt to put pan back on
>stretch armstrong my arm under once again and attempt to hold the pan and carefully thread a bolt in one handed
>this process lasts for about half an hour
>eventually succeed, pour last two quarts of ATF in, pray to jesus that the JB weld doesn't immediately leak like a sieve

>> No.1999314

>JB weld appears to be holding

>manage to make it to the auto parts store just barely with the transmission slipping like a bastard
>found out new pan costs $40
I had to drive it around like that for a couple of months to save up for that 40 god damn dollars. Replacing the pan also involved stretch armstronging with the same scissor jack and socket set.

I also had to manually inject grease on a weekly basis into the CV joint boot to quiet it down, as it was clacking like a son of a bitch.

I still kinda miss those situations. Being able to afford things now just doesn't have the same amount of adventure and fun as being poverty level, lost40PoundsIn3Months-tier poor.

had a 5 litre empty water dispenser and some clear tube around i emptied fuel from the tank into the dispenser , ran the tubing from the nozzle on the dispenser into the fuel filter in the engine bay and strapped the dispenser the roof with a ratch strap through both windows.

Yeah that fucking blows. I had a similar situation awhile back. Began with the tire shop counting to 20 ugga dugga with the air supply turnt to 11, it’s those glorious Chrysler lug nuts with some chrome hard metal cap over a soft ass nut underneath. Try to use the tire iron in the car, the thing bends before the nut cracks loose, strips the fuck out of the nut. Plugged the tire without removing it, made it home, try to use extractors on the nut and it just shreds the outer cap, and then the extractors would peel off layers of this soft ass metal the interior nut was made of before it ever cracked the lug loose. Had to drill the stud out.

>> No.1999992

>>1999957
Kek. They still have the single nuts on some high performance cars, like the fancy 911s, the GT2 RS and shit, they have them but you will never change that on the side of the road unless you keep a 4ft breaker bar or big impact wrench with you.

I’m guessing those weren’t as effective as multiple studs and nuts for different reasons. Also possibly safety, one loose lug nut and 4 tight ones on a wheel won’t kill you.

>>1999960
No, it’s not universal threads. Plus some have the tapered end where it goes into the wheel, some are flat. When I replaced the one in the pic, Vatozone tried to sell me the wrong threads, I had cross referenced it with Rock Auto and I think they changed from metric threads to SAE one of those years and AZ’s website was fucked up. And then when I told VatoZone guy to give me the proper thread with the acorn tapered shape, I ended up with some 15/16 nut size or 21mm instead of the 19mm-3/4” that was on the car.

Also if you use anti-seize and torque the nuts properly, hopefully you won’t have an issue. Keeping a HF breaker bar in the car isn’t a bad idea because the roadside emergency kits are often dogshit. If I get my wheels messed with at a shop, I will re-torque them when I get home because so many shops just slam the fuckers on with air tools, that’s why I had the issue in the first place.

>> No.2000050

>>1999992
Yeah you got a point there also>>1999960 just bring in a nut to canadian tire or something, they usually have a little rack with nuts and bolts with the lugnuts so yo can identify the threads, its like 20$ for new lugnuts, the roadside shit is in fact bullshit so its cheap insurance to swap them out and keep a breaker bar instead

Imagine having a serpentine pulley work its way loose and having to call a tow truck or bother one of your friends with a rescue mission cause you don't have a 1/2in wrench to bolt it back down with.

Got under the truck and the starter was bolted down right so I was clueless. I was at th bottom of a very slight hill too so I wasn't able to skateboard push the the truck to roll start speeds. manager came out and saw me struggling and went back inside and came back out with 3 linemen from the local high school football team that worked there part time busing tables. They were (easily) able to get me to the top of the hill so I could roll start it on the other side. Made me feel like a beta lmao. >tfw cat lady neighbor blew a coolant hose last night
So she called her boomer friend who is sort of all over the place. I showed up first, saw the hose popped off, was just putting that back on when he pulled up. He’s a boomer and I’m just a millennial, seemed to me that this Honda had the temp sensor on the fan side go off, so it got hot at idle and blew the hose. Fans were still good, I turned the AC on and they went full blast, but not when the temp gauge got up. Boomer logic, he dumped coolant in and we jumped one of the fan connectors to get her car home, but he was never really concerned with bleeding the air out of the cooling system, so he tells her to hop in the car and try to get home and the temp gauge is way up before we get out of this parking lot, then he starts ranting about the thermostat and leaking radiator and this and that.

Anyway, we dumped more water in and that with the jumped fan was enough to get home, and I ordered the temp sensor so boomer guy could pick it up and put it in cat lady’s car. The whole day cat lady is telling me boomer was doing this and that, one minute it’s the thermostat and next it’s a clog in the system and next it’s a leaking radiator. I told the lady I’m not getting in the middle of it if boomer is going to keep messing with it.

It’s amazing how impatient boomers are when it comes to troubleshooting, and how fast they will bounce around and act like the cat lady needs a new radiator after seeing some steam when he was at it this morning, not remembering that the entire contents of the cooling system had been pumped all over the emgine bay a few hours before.

Electric fan doesn’t kick on, fuse still has power, turns on with AC and runs when jumped, why are you going to bounce around to thermostat and leaking radiator and clogged coolant passages after seeing that?!

>> No.2001519

No he didn’t. Sunday night we were working in the parking lot, then I ordered the sensor and he installed it in the morning and then was boomer-ing out when they saw some steam. I told cat lady it’s most likely just coolant they spilled, and today she says boomer was there again and says it looks good.

I’m going to do a flush for her soon I think. The car had blue coolant in there, we added a half full VatoZone bottle, a half full Advance bottle, a quart of tap water, and then I think he poured in some more Carquest 50/50 when he changed the sensor.

It originally had the Jappo Blue coolant, my Yamaha scoot has the same stuff. She was going to bring it to the dealer when she thought there was still an issue, I told her to do a flush and they could pressure test that bitch and everything while she was there. But I try to keep her away from that place, they quoted her $800 for a motor mount and a vtec solenoid gasket, I told her fuck that, I ordered the stuff from RockAuto, did the mount a couple months ago, and I’m going to do the gasket along with an oil change probably this weekend.

>> No.2001801

>>2001718
Not familiar with Hondas but if you wanted a motor mount and whatever 800 seems normal as a leaf

>> No.2001813

>>2001801
Yeah it’s normal for the dealer, but it’s a fucking ripoff. The motor mount from RockAuto was like $11, and that’s not even the cheap one, but the better aftermarket. Put a jack under the motor, 3 bolts out, 3 bolts in, take the jack out.

The gasket was only a few bucks, it’s some solenoid bolted on the engine block, I think that’s like 2 bolts and doesn’t look too bad to reach. Might lose some oil, so I’ll do it while I’m doing an oil change and swap the thing while the old oil is draining. $800 for 2 hours in the garage (doing it for the first time, motor mount would be 10min for a Honda mechanic who has done it a bunch of times), and <$30 shipped from RockAuto.

I kind of hate volunteering for the work, but this lady runs a cat rescue and spends all her money on vet bills and cat food trying to trap and neuter all the stray cats, so I’m not trying to see her pay $800 for shit I could get done after work before dinner is ready. Boomer guy is the same, he doesn’t have time for the work, but neither of us wants to see her go pay Honda $400 for a $30 sensor and some coolant.

It’s ok, she can pay the Honda techs double when I totally fuck something up. Also Home Depot and the tool companies are doing pretty good.

I told her to fuck off when the starter went tho. I had googled it to see what it’s like on that car, saw the whole intake manifold had to come off and come in from the top and I had a bunch of shit to do that weekend. Boomer guy didn’t google, he said “Sure, it’s just a couple bolts” and he tried to start it one afternoon after work and gave up at like 10pm with all of these parts laying in her driveway overnight and had to finish it the next day.

There will be another sucker for the Honda techs.

>Caddy
While Vans are ridiculously expensive in Ger, these high roof wagon thingies are at a rock bottom price.
Now people say they are like only 2/3 as big but then think about it, a rough caddy goes for sub 1000 bucks, a rough van of the same year for like 5k Double-tripple that for age or condition changes. Point is that you easily pa a premium by a factor of 5x for mediocre gains. And that's like that for VW/Opel, the Frenchies, Italians and so on.

Janky cars are the best anti-thief device. My '04 Suzuki Jimny (Samurai) has a fucked gearbox: the stick cannot be put into reverse unless it's pushed up into fifth and then down into reverse, and the first gear literally does nothing. The only way to pull off is to put the car in second and very carefully pad the gas pedal. It's been like that since I bought the car in 2008 and honestly I wouldn't change it. If Jamal tries to jack my ride they'll just stall it again and again.
