Most of the things I keep are things I've made. Including my house.

Here's one of the latest things I've made; a holder for my giant Fresnel lens. Here's a video from the pics.

Might I suggest putting a mirror underneath the griddle and having the light shine up underneath to heat better?

Pic is of my starving student millet hybrid amp. Finished it a week or so ago.

>> No.195602

You've need to have the mirror be located out of the shadow of the lens. In essence you could make a parabola mirror array, just outside the shadow of the lens that would heat the back side of whatever object you are focusing on. So, it can be done, though it isn't as practical for me to do.

>amp

That is pretty cool. Very slick looking. Have you considered anodizing it? Though, it looks sweet already.

I'm not sure what you're saying about the shadow of the lens, but here's a picture of what I'm thinking.

In regards to the amp, I want to keep it rather simple, and don't have anodizing resources. I plan to remake the upper wooden portion to re-position the holes and add aluminum disks. Turns out I drilled the holes 1.5" from the front and 2" from the sides, and it's supposed to be opposite of that. I also have yet to lacquer the top and bottom because I wanted to get the thing together and working.

Unfortunately I don't have pictures of the insides (too messy, did a point-to-point build) but it's a really simple design and they have a thread on head-fi concerning it, as well as a site devoted to the construction of it. Since the tubes for the original design are now scarce (immense popularity of the amp) there's a modification that makes it work with different ones, which I used.

Well, to do that you simple move the pan in or out of the focal point so the focal point is larger and spread across a larger area.

The only other amp I have is a portable cMoyBB, and I haven't done very many 'quick switches' from them to compare the differences closely, so I won't go into any audiophile mumbo jumbo because I really don't care/know. I think it sounds nice, though the noise floor is noticable at very low volumes. Aside from that, I'm planning to make an O2 in the near future, so perhaps I'll make an ABX switcher while I'm at it.

I've used pop rivets and, well, 'riveted nails', in that one. Cut off the pointy bit of the nail, and then hammered it to a flat head. The actual head of the nail is on the inside.
I've bought actual rivets since then, by the way (they're rare as hell, for some reason).

The lens on the rear projection TV was right up against the front panel. When using it, make sure the side with the ridges is facing your light source. It works far better that way. Also, never carry it while standing on the shadow side. Always have the lens in YOUR shadow, otherwise you will literally set yourself on fire instantly.

You can see here what one can do to a penny in about 5-8 seconds.

Testimonials all over the web can barely tell the difference between fire brick and regular pressed reds in their pizza ovens and bbqs.
So if there is a critical point that these won't be able to stand, I'll either find it, or I won't.

The wooden box is based of an already successful firebox I use in historical reenactment. With a metal drip pan as a cover/extinguisher, and a layer of clay beneath the sand - if fire does reach the frame, I'll either find the flaw in my design, or I won't.

Only sucky part is vikings didn't have plywood.

But thank you for your valued input.

Thanks for the interest. I use the simplest way for a latex mask. Sculpt in clay then make a plaster mold, cast in latex and finish with paint and hair.

Detailed version:
>I use clay on an armature to sculpt the masks.
>Once they are how I like I make a thick plaster mold.
>Fill that with latex and leave sit for about an hour until it creates a dry skin.
>Pour excess back into container and leave mold to dry.
>24 hours later pull out mask, trim and paint it before adding hair.

Anywhere I can find the right stuff. I live in the netherlands where there are pretty much no chain stores for sewing supplies. I buy fabric at the market (though they usually only sell cheap-medium priced stuff) and if I need something specific I know a couple of great shops in Amsterdam with a really wide range of stuff. Also I'm not afraid of buying fabric intended for curtains or upholstery, it's usually thick and sturdy which is great for corsets.

>> No.196844

>>196787

Ah, in the states it's easier to find fabric I guess, I mean almost every store has fabric at it. Your use of upholstery fabric reminds me of my use of automotive vinyl: I used it to make a "leather" replica of an 1860s army haversack for a friend of mine.

That took forever.

Have you ever had to make something out of a sheet before? (I had to once, I couldn't find any white fabric ANYWHERE so I ripped up a sheet and made a Teutonic knight's uniform(with a steel sword) for my friend for Halloween)

That reminds me of what my sister does, she can never find the right color of fabric so guess who had to teach her how to dye things?

I've yet to make a drying rack for her though...

I don't know if the dye will show as well since it's not white wool.

Don't over do it trying to get it black, I've put too much powder in a mix and I pulled out something that looked like it was covered in tar.

This is a foot stool I made in woodshop class when I was 12 or 13, so about 15 years old now. You can see that the seat is brighter than the legs. The reason is that I had a little time over in school after I was finished with my resent stool (next post), so I wanted to renovate it since the glue was getting bad and the wood warping, so the seat was cracking down the middle. I managed to cut it in half, shaved it, drilled out some holes in the middle and inserted plugs and glued it. I had time to sandpaper and re-oil the seat but not the legs or the underside. Hopefully I will have time for that next fall.
I am pretty pleased with it, considering everything, and I have had use for it all those years.

Pizza ovens and BBQ's do not get up to the temperature of 1800 degrees plus. If you try and use anything lower than this temperature it could be a problem (not that it is not possible to use lower temperatures, it just takes a lot longer to heat up any sort of decently sized stalk to a proper forging temperature.) Since you appear to be using coal you will want to get the lowest sulfur coal you can (particularly if you plan to make things that hold an edge because sulfur makes steel brittle.) I do not see where you will be using the bellows, but be careful if you are using them through a side port because it will be hard to build a proper coal mound. Depending on the type of coal, it may help to crush it and soak it in water before you go to coke it. You may already know this, but you will want to even pieces of stalk (preferably round) so that you can make your first pair of tongs. Make sure they are long enough so that you do not burn you hands holding them.

Also, if you do not have an anvil yet I would suggest finding a chunk of railroad track, but I have also heard forklift tines are good.

Yeah, they typically range from 700F to 1200F and cook pizzas in about 90 seconds to 2 minutes max. They make awesome pizza. Many pizza ovens are made with refractory inside so they last longer.

Trash cans, paper, fiberglass resin and bondo. I ripped a low res 3d model for the helm from a Dawn of War mod and unfolded it using a program called Pepakura designer. Built the base of the helm out of cardstock using those templates and resin/bondo/sanded it to shape and sturdiness. The front part I designed and built out of rubbermaid trashcans and for sale signs.

Yes, they are cut out of styrene for sale signs and hand beveled - I didnt have a heat gun when I worked on this.. so almost all of the detailing is either superglued in place or a combination of superglue/bolts/rivets. The gold details on the right shoulder are held in place by 36 rivets - for example. I didn't mind doing it that way since imo it adds to the look.

I used to spar with bokken (wooden katanas) but upgraded to Cold Steel's polypropolene bokken. I cord wrapped the hilt out of hockey tape. The wakizahis are made of old wooden swords that had broke in combat. Now we pad them with Wacky Noodles (neon-colored foam tube pool toy) so they don't hurt as much, it's like a nerf bat.

The exotic weapons here are models based off Hiroaki Samura's Blade of the Immortal manga. The artist admits no martial arts training, and wondered if any of the weapons he designed would even work in real life. So I made some out of wood, and some out of polypropolene kitchen cutting boards, but it seams that if they're carved and not injection molded, they break.

The hard part was that it had a carbon mic, and every circuit I've seen needs an external battery. But people forget that your computer's mic input actually provides 2 volts and a handful of miliamps for electret microphones. (It's not actually stereo -- the "right" connector provides the voltage) The circuit I made draws half a miliamp at 2 volts and provides a level control for the mic. It's not done, I want to add some switches and an XLR connector so I can use it with clear-com.

It's easier now that SSDs are commonplace. At the time I used a Compactflash to IDE adapter to use a CF card as the primary drive.

Then it was just a matter of picking an ITX motherboard, a processor with a low enough wattage to use a passive heatsink but still enough speed to handle video playback.
The power supply was a tiny 200w DC-DC unit that plugs directly into the motherboard.

No fans needed. No hard drive platters spinning.
