Stain, you need a wood stain and a gloss finish. You need to do a coat and let it dry/cure for 24 hours, then put another coat and repeat this process until its dark enough, then spray it with high gloss finish. a small can of stain will run you $15 and so will good quality gloss, a large can of stain can run $80-150.

Please stop. I hate seeing the threads about the finish looking like crap and being sticky forever.

Your guitar is unfinished? What kind of wood? I just finished one for the first time, it's a swamp ash top I used Keda water based dye and automotive clear. What you want to do depends a lot on the wood.

>and a gloss finish
OP's pic doesn't look like high gloss to me. More like a satin finish.

My advice would be to acquire a piece of scrap wood similar to what the guitar is made of and test the stain/finish combinations on that first.

If it's a cheap fender or knock off it's probably made of basswood. you can get that at Hobby Lobby to test it out. or just stain the back and see how it looks.

Tung oil will give it a nice dark satin finish,
True Oil will give it a dark glossy finish.
Alternatively you can spray it with dark toner nitro lacquer in several coats and top it off with a satin or gloss finish clear coat.

I used satin polyurethane on my bass and #0000 steel wool to dull it a bit.
