1956010 No.1956010 [Reply] [Original]

I'll make this simple: I want to build a plane as cheaply as possible. I am tired of the ground, and don't want to live with these fools anymore. I wish to escape upwards to the sky. I know I could spend thousands on a kit, but I just don't feel like it. I'm going to "obtain" a small engine somehow and jury rig that to work. What I'm asking you all, is what materials should be used, how I should go about this, and how can I make this retarded dream soar skyward? I know many small planes are made of wood, but I'm not exactly a woodsman. I was thinking of using some light wood from Home Depot. Please, lend me your advice as I research this endeavor more.

>> No.1956016

>>1956010
Don't bother with the Depot OP, it's full of covid positive brown people right now, and the wood is all expensive anyway. What you want to do is go to a hobby shop and ask for all the balsa they can supply you with. Trust me, there hasn't been anyone in a hobby shop in the US since 1987, you'll be safe from disease and there'll be plenty of very light wood.

>> No.1956020

>>1956016
I'll be honest, I don't know much about balsa wood. Can it really take the weight of an engine, as well as a human? I just can't see that working. Not to say you're full of crap, I just don't know enough about it

I want you to think about this statement for a couple minutes, go into the big picture and look at society as a whole - the restrictions we put ourselves under, the goals some of us never reach because of that and then I want you to zoom out even further, medidate for a second and think back when there were no planes.

Your statement might still stand - but fuck living a life where you only travel to what the magazine offers. Did you ever have real, wild sex in-line with your fantasys? Do you consider it a possibility? This (the problems outlined in the entire post if you activily interacted with it) is what defines human society for most of its effects on you.

Before you can decide what materials you will make the plane out of, you must first learn the fundamentals of aviation, such as how lift is generated and how control surfaces work. You'll need to learn about aerodynamics and how to shape the wings properly to push air downwards. I would suggest making the plane as light as possible, the heaviest thing on board should be the engine, and don't waste material and weight adding things that aren't necessary, such as a completely sealed off cockpit or a door. Better make sure you have some good landing gear too, because if manage to take off and can't find a way to slow down you are almost certainly dead or severely injured crashing at that speed.

I want YOU to think about what you just said for a few minutes.

What do you know about air safety for fuck's sake? Or engineering? The reason building a plane is no joke is because while it's not that hard to get something that will mostly stay in the air for awhile until it breaks, without STRINGENT checks on everything, and years of testing, you'll never have the slightest idea what could go wrong until you find yourself dropping like a rock from 20k+ feet.

Unlike almost every other area of tinkering where there is some wiggle room, you will not build an aircraft yourself and live more than a year unless you get yourself a complete education in engineering and piloting.

Even a perfectly-operating aircraft with decades of reliable service in multiple theatres is a goddamned death trap unless you do everything right 100% of the time.

But if you decided to ignore what I have to say, please, please, PLEASE at least stream your maiden voyage on youtube.

You get the best feeling of flying around, and if your nig-rig motor dies mid flight, you're already parachuting, so you just set yourself down somewhere.

Please don't attempt to build and fly your own traditional airplane unless you actually want to die. Early aviation was really fucking dangerous... during the first decade of flight, thousands of men died in accidents and mishaps. Learn from the mistakes of the past.

Funny thread this. Seen it and was immediately cast back to when I was 9/10 years old. I remember reading a story about some of the early flight pioneers who would explore vast areas looking for their riches. Mainly south america. Due to the availability of the materials they all used balsa wood framed planes. They would stretch fabric across the frame and coat it in a dope solution that would harden. Kinda like fibre glass. They were death traps to be sure but they were extremely light and could take off and land in really short distances. These guys used to do surveys etc for prospecting, look out for log camps even science trips.

Anon, i am glad you want to do your thing, but you have to figure out some things first:

Engine: fuel doesnt behave the same at high altitudes. Any funny thing your engine do can stop you in mid takeoff and you eill fall down. That is one of the main causes of air accidents. That is the reason the cessnas have a compartiment to drain the water inside the fuel. It doesnt work as a car. As a general rule, be very careful using a land engine on an airplane.

Fuel: Unlike a car, that you buy and then buy fuel casually and it is a small hassle, a plane works a little different. Immense amounts of power is required to get this thing airborne and it spends an ABSURD amount of fuel. A very economical GA plane does 6 gallons of fuel per hour. 6 GALLONS. That is about 15-30 dollars PER HOUR if you live in the US. If you live in europe, where fuel is more costly, expect burning at least 60 euros EACH hour.
That is the main cost of the aircraft. After some few hours, only on fuel, you gonna spend more than you spent building the aircraft.

FAA Regulations: I appreciate you want to be free, licenseless. We all do. But do you realise how difficult things will be if you dont have a FAA PPL license to run your aircraft? And on a non FAA-Certified aircraft? It means you could face huge trouble if you tried to land anywhere but your own home. Once you try to land it, the lack of an N-number would raise questions and good luck having access to any airport or getting any FBO service (fueling, parking...)

Parking: Parking costs is another huge hassle. It is not as straightforward as parking a car. Supposing you could land it on an regional airport, and you want to know the city or do something at it, hangar daily costs are costly. Actually, just to land you would pay a not so cheap fee.
