You can start with that set you have in your pic. Depending on things, you might need larger ones but wait until the need arises.

Start with the 7” and then get the 10” and 12” as needed. Get the 10” cobras to complement and then get other sizes as needed. I carry the 10” cobras and 7” pliers wrench everywhere I go and rarely need other sizes.

10” is probably better for plumbing, but I use the 8” Irwins more because I use them to fuck with air lines a lot. If you think you will use it for like 1” plumbing fittings, get the 10”, otherwise get down on the 7-1/4” for 3/8” to 3/4” fasteners.

No, it’s a more complex joint. It’s still pretty smooth, but it’s heavier and more friction. Not bad at all, you can still whip it around a little bit, but not the same thing and you need to press the button to adjust them rather than flipping it open like slip joint pliers. It’s sort of a different tool though, the pliers wrench is more of a replacement for a crescent wrench.

I have said I like the Irwins because they ratchet closed, you only need to press the button to open them, but I have a feeling it wouldn’t be as solid of a hold when you need to put a lot of pressure on the tool.

Get you a cheap basin wrench too. Makes getting faucets out of tight corners a hell of a lot easier without rounding the plastic nut

I use 10" most commonly unless I'm doing a small project. Every man should have a chain wrench to do his own plumbing, though.

Try these Knipex pliers:
86 03 125 - mini, good for angle valves in tight areas
86 03 300 - good for regular applications

Also I use them as a vice, grip the fitting with the Knipex then tighten the other fittings with a wrench
