I gave up on knives with these kinds of blades ten years ago because I could never find one that held the blade securely , they kept pulling out or getting pushed up into the handle.
Have they gotten any better ?
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good one?
Maybe an amazon link?

Don't. The last thing you want is for the blade to fold over. You'll literally lose a finger.

Been using pic related for years at work and never had a problem with the blade sliding around or any of that shit. I kinda switched to a small fixed blade knife on my belt, but the Stanley is still going strong if I forget the fixed blade.

Everybody says the Milwaukee versions are the best, the Fastback I think. I would try one out but I can’t manage to kill the Stanley Fatmax. I have the 2nd one because I lost the first at one of my accounts, and then found it again 2 months later.

I've used the classic non-folding style for decades with no problem but generally for their intended purpose and use appropriate fixed blade knives for more brutal work. Box cutters are for box cutting and light work only.

Also these ones are like lots of pocket knives, I think they call it the liner lock. Right where the thumb stud is to open it, you can easily unlock it to close it with your thumb in the same place. They lock open well and it’s quick and easy to push in with your thumb to close them, might not be as easy for a lefty though. I prefer that style of lock to the one on the Craftsman in the OP, I think the liner lock is easier to close with one hand.

Mostly boxes and plastic, but I have done some fuckery when it has a sharp blade. Like those Plano tackle boxes, the clear plastic flat storage containers, I use it to cut out dividers and customize the compartments, it held up well on those. I have never had a blade pop out on me unless I’m meaning to change it.

I grabbed the Stanley because I needed one my first week at that job and it was the best one Walmart carried. I think the only downside is it’s kind of fat, it could definitely be thinner. Everybody who tries pic related loves them, they’re only $15 so it’s worth trying and you can toss it in the bottom of your bag if it doesn’t become your go-to knife.

I bought the Milwaukee Fastback to replace and old harbor freight one I had for a few years. It came as a 2 pack with the larger one with blade storage & strap/seatbelt cutter and a smaller general purpose one. I carry the larger one daily and the other one lives under my wallet in my under dash storage in my truck. I've used Stanley, craftsman, dewalt and countless no name brands and this one feels like it's gonna be a long term carry.

I like the quick open button and the lock feels solid. The wire pocket clip is a lot more secure than the usual money clip type bracket that's usually on cheaper knives. I typically keep a box cutter on me as an EDC since there's no need to sharpen the blade and they're usually not viewed as weapons in commie states (pickup truck or dirty boots + box cutter = tradesman or handyman in most cops eyes).

I'd pick up one if I was you OP. Worst case scenario, it ends up on the bottom of a tool bag like >>1918795 said or "borrowed" (never fucking returned) by someone that needs one.

EVERYONE IN THIS THREAD SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LISTEN

I'm a carpenter and I'm rough on my tools. For similar reasons as OP I have largely treated folding utility knives as disposable. I tried all the ones at the box stores and some would be good for 6 months or so but invariably would eventually break or the blade would start slipping out.

To be fair, when I say I'm rough on my tools, I do shit like sometimes use my utility knife as an impromptu chisel and beat the back of the blade housing with my 24oz framing hammer to remove a bit of wood. I never expected to find a utility knife that would hold up to this kind of abuse. I'd just buy a new knife every time mine broke.

Then two years ago I bought these Workpro brand utility knives off Amazon. They're the best fucking things to ever happen to utility knives. They're small, light, compact - hardly noticeable clipped to a pocket. They lock up sturdy and although they're small I have no problem gripping them when I really bear down and cut something. And unbelievably, they even stand up to my impromptu chisel usage. They're also cheap. At 15 bucks for a 3 pack I get 3 of em for what I used to pay for 1 knife. In two years, I still have not broken one of these, even beating on them with my framing hammer.

Regrettably I am down to two of the original three, but that is only because I ditched a fat dumb bitch at a bar and didn't take the time to retrieve my knife from the bouncer. This was an acceptable calculated loss. Seconds count in an escape.

I had some coke whore in La Jolla ask me for one of the remaining two as a first date present. I declined, then snorted the rest of her coke. Who fucking gives out first date presents?

Milwaukee makes good stuff generally and I thought their utility knives would be the best too, but they did not stand up to that abuse at all. The plate that holds the blade in separated very quickly under that treatment.

>>1921939
Before I found these workpro knives, my favorite utility knife was kobalt. The black plastic handled one they sell at lowe's for like 10 bucks. That one would handle being beat with a hammer for a couple months usually, then it would get all fucked up and loose and the blade would start pulling out, and I'd buy a new one.

These little workpro things just keep taking the beating. The housing that holds the blade doesn't have anywhere to separate unlike most designs.

The problem with this design is the blade release button. When you’re gripping in up high doing detail work like back cutting a piece of molding molding or sharpening a pencil you invariably put pressure on it and the blade pulls out.
Nothing beats the Stanley 199 with a proper sheath, the newer version with the overlapping halves as opposed to the original which was split right down the middle giving the blade only a thirty second of support which would eventually wear away resulting in the blade push thru the seam.

Not him but that's the EAB-Lite. It makes a gay ass shape. I have had both the EAB and the EAB-Lite. The only reason I stopped using the EAB was because I lost it. The EAB is a much straighter rectangle shape, the EAB-Lite makes a weird dumb shape.

I bought a stanley 99 today. Good knife, terrible spare blade container, immediately stuck a spring inside to stop them from rattling around.

Made short work of my old boxes, I think having the full cutting guide is what makes the difference. Some of these folders and retractables have scalloped or partial length cutting guides and I can't ever see that working well on cardboard.

the main issue with these cutters is that the blades are complete dogshit these days

I use a Husky razor blade and the thing is fucking unusable after 1 cut

Are their any brands of razor blades that are actually good?

any of you taken the scapel pill?
cheap, high quality blades, far more secure holding of the blade

>>1930347
No, I just personally don't prefer the looks. I GUESS you might be able to stretch the argument that it has holes in the side for weight reduction which let in more pocket lint but I haven't found this to be an issue.

They're both extremely similar and I prefer the looks and shape of the non-lite regular EAB.

They have a ginormous lineup of snips and scissors and assorted yard cutters but stores don’t tend to carry a huge selection. My local Northern Tool has a lot of stuff from them I didn’t even know they sold like a big assortment of sheet metal snips and some real nice bolt cutters. Surprisingly, their stuff isn’t even that expensive for the quality you get.

OP again.
Just got these delivered.
The fit and finish is much better than the amazon photos so happy with that.
The blade however does rattle . Not when closed but when open
I wish it held more firmly but hopefully it will not pull out when cutting grabby materials.
Would rather they sold them individually instead of three packs.

Its 100% metal, cast aluminum powdercoated body, the blade holder is also that cast material so its fits very well into the handles. No rattle, very smooth action. Its not like the Stanley 99e (which I have a ton of) which rattles and feels light and hollow.
Its sorta heavy and bulky, as you can see its wide. But I like that, I dont carry it around in my pocket like a pocket knife.
Their "turbo pro" feels about the same, but its way thinner but I prefer the thicker grip.

The one thing thats weird, it only has 1 position, blade fully extended and fully retracted. I always fully extend my blade so its not a big deal to me.
But its a really good utility knife for throwing on the work bench, not for carrying around in your pocket

Just got it for under 5 at lowes on clearance, good for packages, and opening bags of soil, feet, pruning small plants for cuttings, but not great for drywall, wood trim, etc.

As the guy who stripped 6,000 pounds of 600 wire by hand because his boss is just so nice (pic related) get an old milwaukee one where the blade slides out. Super comfortable and stores a ton of spares. I tried a handful of knives and that one is far and away the best

its only like $200 to get a wire stripper, and it will do 50' a minute if you can handle the wire... I cut mine into 10' chunks and run it through once, then flip and run it again. the insulation just falls off after that.. I have done ~3000lbs in the last year or so on my own time.

If your boss tries to make you do it by hand sell him the idea for 10% of the wire money.
