Alright /diy/ I've got myself a sewing machine.
Someone show me how to use it, and what I should do with it.
I was thinking about making an iPad 2 cover, but I don't want to make the kind that are just a slip case, I want to make one like the nice ones with the flap that opens in the front. They're like, 50 bucks to buy at the store, so fuck that I'd rather just haphazardly make my own.
Now, I have an old case, so I think I can make out the general sewing pattern, plus it even has the magnets to make it a smart cover, I just don't know what kind of materials to use so that the case can be durable or rigid enough to be a good cover...
I've been looking for a more exact sewing pattern for a smart case so that I can just print and start sewing, but no luck. Anyone know if one even exists?
Any tips, help or advice would be great, /diy/.

Also, before it EVEN comes up, I'm not an Apple-drone or whatever terms /g/ is using nowadays, my grandma got the iPad 2 for me for Christmas, so please don't give me shit about it.

You'll probably get better sewing help on /cgl/.

No it's mine.

I would ask /cgl/, but I don't think /cgl/ would be very cooperative with tips on making iPad covers.

I don't see the problem. Take some measurements of the pad, cut some plastic sheets for stiffeners, mark the dimensions on the canvas, cut and sew. While I've never done a sleeve for an iPad, I've done other stuff along the same lines and it didn't take that much effort to begin.

If you can't get rigid materials, get some dense foam and put it between two layers of fabric. It would most likely provide better cushioning than rigid fabric anyway, as it would help absorb the shock if the iPad is dropped.

Yeah, I guess it doesn't seem too hard, it's just that it's my first sewing project and I don't really want to screw up. I think the hardest part will be doing the part that holds the iPad in place, since the strips of fabric will have to be really thin and yet still have to hold the tablet firmly.
Do they sell plastic sheets at Jonna's? I think that's what's making my current store-bought cover rigid.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I'm going to Joanna's today to pick out fabrics and get materials, I'll see if I can pick some up. It would be nice to have some cushion, considering how fragile these things are...

sewfag checking in

It shouldn't be hard to get the pattern, simply measure the cover, and add 1.5 cm or 5/8 in. around the edges for seam allowance. You will probably end up with only rectangular pieces so drawing it shouldn't be too hard. There are sew-in magnets that are used for closures on purses and the like, you might be able to use those (just make sure it doesn't somehow blank your hard drive).

Now, for using the sewing machine, I wrote this general tutorial a while ago for a blog that never happened. It will help you somewhat, but every machine is different so you may need a manual for your specific machine.

Thanks a bunch! Yeah, the smart cover already uses magnets to keep close and turn off the iPad, so that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the instructions~
I'll update the thread when I get the fabrics and supplies and start sewing (things popped up that stopped me from getting them before).
