I heard about a guy who broke his jaw with one of them. trying to cut an 8 inch pipe on a scaffold, the band saw broke so instead of climbing down 15 feet to get a different one he decided to grab the 7 inch grinder with a grinding wheel and cut it that way. he got about 2/3rds through, the pipe flexed where he was grinding it out, locked up the disc, worked itself free, sent it flying back at his face. lost 7 teeth and fractured his jaw in 2 places.

Depends on what type you're comfortable using, bru. They come in different wheel sizes. Most common is 4-1/2", and since you don't seem to know grinders, start there.
The main thing is that there are three main switch types for grinders: sliding switches, paddle switches, and triggers. I prefer sliding switches. They lock in the on position until released. Paddle switches are kind of like triggers, but they take up the whole grip, and they have a safety mechanism that keeps them from turning on unintentionally; grinder only remains on as long as the paddle switch is held. Triggers are self-explanatory.
The only other things that matter are amp rating, and whether, or not, the speed is adjustable.
My opinion, go with either makita, or milwaukee.
Grinders aren't expensive, especially since 9 times out of 10, you're gonna be buying a corded one. Something like a grinder, that's meant to just run and run, beats the hell out of batteries--makes them overheat. So, why cheap out on them, you know?

It usually happens because retards take off the guard and use larger discs that aren't rated for the higher RPMs. This dumbfuck in Engineering when I worked for Milliken almost killed himself when he did just that and the blade shattered then caught his arm and slit his wrist all the way up to his elbow with the stray shark toothed looking shard that was left still attached to the hub. A major grain company in the US has recently adopted a rule that anyone within 10' of someone doing a task that requires extra PPE (like a face shield for grinding) must have the same PPE on.

So, if I'm holding a ladder for a guy who's wearing fall protection, I guess I have to have fall protection too.

Yeah, good luck on enforcing that with a bunch of knuckle-dragging millwrights.

Like >>1891855 said, it's mostly a problem with using bigger discs than what the grinder is rated for.
I've had a bunch of discs break from binding, but when that happens, it just breaks, the pieces don't go flying.
If the pieces go flying, it's because the centrifugal force was too much for the disc.
Another reason it can happen is using discs that got wet, or slightly damaged, weakening them.

I only use a brushless battery grinder and only when another tool isn't suitable. I'm a builder so that's completely sufficient. Brushless grinders have an automatic anti kickback feature that operates in a split second and I can personally attest to its effectiveness. Plus an 18v grinder is a lot less powerful. That helps.

I hate the bloody things. Most dangerous tool I own imo. At least with a drop saw or table saw you just have to keep away from the blade, the blade doesn't come to you. And a skillsaw is safe enough too of you aren't using it like a retard. I don't own a corded skilly anymore either, because I have a cordless one that's as powerful and again, blade braking and anti kickback. It makes a difference.

Works fine if you aren't stupid and "see" the work as a process.

Stay out of the plane of rotation.
Use the fucking guard.
Hold the grinder with both hands.
Cut such that you don't pinch the cutting disc.
Cut such that you don't sideload the disc.
Do not force the disc (hold the grinder gently and let the disc float and do not load it down).
Mimic industrial cutoff saws and move your disc gently back and forth in the cut which widens the kerf a few thousandths of an inch and makes a shallower cut than the arc of the disc edge reducing jamming.
ALWAYS know and consider theory of operation of every tool you ever use no matter how simple they appear.
Wear a face shield, gloves and glasses. I have full PPE at home too. Many pros get hurt at the house because they imagine PPE isn't worth the cost.
Don't wear loose clothing.
Direct the sparks away from your body not least because fragments go that way if a disc fails.

I and many weldors have made thousands of cuts safely with cutting discs. BTW we also know the most vicious flesh eater is the flat knotted wire wheel (not the cup style). Those motherfuckers are brutal.

The ideal cut position is where the disc would be free to fail and still could not hurt you, like the ideal rigging lift can fail and hurt no one. Always plan for "safe failure'. Or not, since I don't work with you.
