I mean it's not that crazy. Some rural people have used corn cobs (minus the corn) to wipe their ass with. Toilet paper isn't really that effective for a few different reasons, and it's not very clean to use just toilet paper. It's dry and it doesn't have a very effective shape for the job. You need to combine their use with wet wipes, a bidet, a wet rag, or taking a shower immediately after shitting. If you had the means to properly handle and clean a used instrument like a sponge or a rag, and you had no access to running water for a shower or bidet, it would be far more hygienic than only using toilet paper.

I live in the US and I think, based on how things are here and the family i lived with in Spain/friends in Europe, I think people in Europe on average go to the grocery store more frequently. We go maybe once every week or two and will have all the food for a family of 4-5 for that amount of time or longer. This makes me so anxious. Imagine you're walking towards the hole for some reason. And you slip, and there's no way to stop yourself from tumbling into the hole. Why the fuck did they build it this way? Why can't it be a perpendicular shaft? What if you go there with a boat when there's more water, but not enough to cover the whole and the boat will go down the hole, or the flow is high enough to suck in the boat?
