What are these ugly paneling I see on so many houses in the US???
Houses would look 2x better if they were anything else. is it possible to replace it with some kind of covering that doesn't look like shit?
I'd be content with most McMansions if they didn't have this crappy stuff on the outside.

>I'd be content with most McMansions
No you wouldn't. They are constructed of the cheapest materials possible by the cheapest labor possible. Within 5 years you'll be replacing everything because it's all cheap Chinese junk that didn't last.
Steer far clear of these cookie-cutter houses in developments. If you want a new house build to suit and make sure you have the final say over materials.

Depending on where you are, it should be far cheaper. The vast majority of a house's cost is in labor and BS upcharges all over the place. Even a large house will have well under $100k in materials, unless you go nuts on the furnishings. Only real exceptions are if you want to use some unusual material/construction technique, or you're comparing against a lot that's stupid cheap because nobody wants to live there (middle-of-nowhere/dead boomtown situation).

The house I'm renting has vinyl siding. Every month or so a strip will come off half way and start flapping in the wind. It's pretty easy to push it back into its plastic retaining track but that shouldn't happen in the first place. No way I'd ever buy a home in this neighborhood. All of the houses were built like this.

Sounds like whoever installed it was a fucktard and didn't space the panels correctly. Gonna be residing part of the house I just bought later this summer for similar reasons. Pulled off a big section of it and checked the lines, there is up to 1/2" of variance from one course to the next, so the tension on them is all fucked. Honestly don't know how you do that. All you have to do is set the starter strip correctly and pull the courses up.

That is what everyone uses out here. Boy howdy do you get tired of it fast though. Everything from houses to Walmarts are made out of it. Makes everything look like giant blocks from a distance. Also can have problems with cracking if done cheaply or on the wrong kind of building. If you have an old home don't think you can just pull the old siding down and stucco it. If your place has any flex to it, which old buildings often have, you will have cracking in the corners and around openings within a few years. You can't 'fix' these cracks, only temporarily repair them until it happens again.

it is way cheaper. The people saying it would be more expensive are construction shills. The materials are very comparatively cheap. The labor will cost nothing if you do it yourself.

The reason houses are so expensive is because construction companies are making money hand over fist. Think about all the house flipping shoes. The margins on homes are so great their is literally a market to flip homes.

Economies of scale only apply to lowering the cost of the business. The business will only pass those savings along to the consumer in a competitive environment. We don't see that in construction which is why house flipping exists. The margins are way too high.

ok then maybe i shouldn't be using smart words :) i mean whatever you call that, more like wholesale vs retail prices. you can't compete with the builder since they buy their materials in bulk at much lower prices since they build a lot of houses. something like that. and then they pass their savings on to the customers by selling mcmansions at lower prices (that doesn't apply to the cost of land of course so in expensive markets thats the more important factor). thats not considered an economy of scale?

You don't install stucco yourself, you hire the local crew of mexicans to do it for you.

If you prep the site well before they show up they'll do a good job, for example remove all your old siding, and provide a nice spot for them to stucco down to. On my house I removed deck boards in the front of the house to get down to the concrete foundation, then I used 1.5" angle iron and anchored it to my foundation making sure to seal up behind the angle iron anywhere there were gaps with silicone. This left them a nice shelf to end the stucco on at the bottom. I did that on 3 sides of the house and the 4th side (a walk out basement) had a concrete slab that they went down to. Then remove any deck railings and add proper anchoring points for them so that they can stucco around them and you can add the railings back after they are done. Make sure your window sills are in good shape, etc. Basically think like you're going to do it yourself and provide a good base for them to do their job. Another thing I did was I had a mast for electricity coming down one wall. I added standoffs to hold it off the wall so they could stucco behind it instead of butting up to it with the stucco.

Then you call them up, a few of them come and tar paper and chicken wire the house one day, the next day they bring a crew of 7 or 8 and completely gray coat the house. Then it is your responsibility to wet the house down as much as you can for the next week or so to slow the cure down and stop cracking as much as you can. After a week or two they'll come back for a color coat and knock that out in a day.

Fuck stuccoing yourself, those guys are good and fast, and not terribly expensive.

Those shingle rippers work, but I never use them. Cedar shakes are easy, just go get a hammer and pry bar and go at it, you'll figure it out.

The shingles are staggered and overlapped. They also are installed bottom row first (obviously, so the higher ones overlap for water to run off them) which means that nails in the upper shingles will be holding shingles in lower rows. See like the one with the red arrow in the drawing. If you wanted to remove that shingle, after you pull the two nails that are visible, just eyeball where the nails in the higher shingle are, split the one that's getting removed with your bar and hammer so it breaks around the nails (split where red lines are) and pull out the pieces. With the shingle out you can pry on the higher shingles a little just to lift the nails, then pull those nails out. Then reinstall and nail.
