I take any good boards off of the pallets I get and then store them for later projects. Got enough of them to build this dog-house for my puppers. Keeps the wife happy when she wants to build something out of pallet wood too. I built a rack under the deck that I can sort the boards into by size to keep them out of the dirt and organized. I also have saved a bunch of them to use as siding on an interior wall of my shop once I get a loft built... Should look bretty gud.

Something like this works wonders... Also if you can sacrifice a bit of length of the boards just run a cut down one side of the pallet right next to the side board to free up one end of the top/bottom boards. It really helps to be able to grab the one bys and pull them apart to pop the nails out of the center board with some light hammer taps. Once you have it out of the middle board the 3rd board is a piece of cake.

Pic related is my balcony.

Howerver I find interior furniture made of pallet really awful. Either it looks like shit or it needs so much work to disassemble and shape it in a decent looking thing than it's just a huge waste of time.

You're both missing the point entirely and I'm guessing you've never worked with pallet wood in this manner. The whole point of this exercise is to do a challenge. Yes I literally bought a grand worth of tools that I've been wanting forever, and I'll have those tools twenty years from now and I'll still be using them to make things. You're absolutely right, anyone can go to Home Depot and buy a few 2x4s and make a frame. But there's craftsmanship in taking the absolutely worst wood you can find and working out the cups, bows, warps, fixing the holes, making everything perfectly flat, angles line up, all the same thickness, etc. Genuinely reclaiming this wood is difficult and by the time you have everything in great shape there's not much left. That's what makes this so special. It's not just pallet wood, it's pallet wood that's been made perfect. Taking literally absolutely shitty wood and making it into something everyone can play with and enjoy. Now that's what I call a project. It's like people who build their own cars vs those who just buy a fast one from the dealership. I'm much more impressed with the guy who built his car...

The rails are those ~1/2" slotted deals for mounting shelf brackets, turned like: |_| and screwed to the edge of the pallet slat. The smaller plastic bins (which you can get at thrift stores for next to nothing sometimes) fit perfectly.

There's a company a couple doors down that probably gets 50 pallets a week. They leave the empty ones outside, and encourage people to take them. They might need 3-4 a week to ship stuff out.

It’s been great so far. I didn’t have to adjust anything out of the box. As long as you’re realistic about what it can and can’t do. It’s not really made for long pieces unless you build a table for it and even then it can only do so much. But getting those perfect 90 degree sides had been wonderful. Just be wary that some kind of dust collection is required to run this. Unfortunately even with the shop vac plate fully removed, the opening where it throws out shavings still still jams full of shavings and you have to stop to clean it out. The machine just can throw them out fast enough. With just a few passes the inside of the box fills up, so to actually get any work done you’ll need to hook up a shop vac to keep it clear. I plug my shop vac and the jointer into a power strip and just turn on the power strip when I’m ready to go so they both come on at the same time. The board edges do taper pretty quick as you joint them so expect to run a pass through a table saw to get them parallel again when you’re done. Time will tell as far as blade life goes, but so far so good. I’d recommend it

These are cornhole boards and they are for playing a game called cornhole. It’s a four player game with teams of two. So you and a buddy on one team vs. the other two guys. Basically you try to throw your beanbags into the hole from a distance. There’s a scoring system where if your beanbag lands on the board you get 1 point, and if it goes in the hole you get 3 points. The first to 21 points wins. If you go over 21 points, you reset to 15 points and keep going until you get a perfect 21 points. The boards usually look like this, with some kind of storage underneath to hold the beanbags.

Didn’t get anything done tonight. My new 12” x 18” lathe came in and I wanted to make sure it worked incase I need to return it. I picked up the harbor freight turning set and tried some different designs on a shitty piece of scrap 2x2. Came out ok for my first time, even though the crap wood was very prone to splintering. Actually had a lot of fun doing it. Definitely want to turn a bowl on it when I get some free time

>> No.1819786

>>1819775
You should have gotten the $20 set. It's cheap so you don't cry like a baby when you drop one and chip the edge. Soft as butter too. Easy to sharpen, which you will have to do often, so you will learn how to do it right without fucking up a real set.

I have heard decent things about their HSS set, which you have. The first thing you should turn is a few handles, as I have heard the handles use a very cheap wood that splits. That said, they should put the "high-speed steel" bit in quotes. I have seen these chisels bend under load. You can't bend real high-speed steel without heating it first. It too hard so it cracks. They are faux high-speed steel chisels.

>>1819786
Thanks for the tips, if these handles ever break I’ll look into making some new ones. Might be kinda weird but I just sat on the ground when I was doing this so I’m not too worried about dropping anything from up high. Hopefully these last for a while. I guess if any one breaks I’ll know to buy a better one. I’m a little worried about turning a bowl, I hear it’s much more dangerous than a spindle. desu I’m not even sure which one of the tools to use, I’ll have to look it up I guess.

Got some epoxy poured into the holes on the slats of one cornhole board. I put tape on the side that will be facing up to help it be flush with the rest of the board. Note the 2 slats with tape on them. I turned them upside down for the pic just to show that side, and flipped them back over after taking the pic so the epoxy can gravity fill the hole. Didn’t make much progress today. The waifu said she needed a planter for some flower seedlings she’s growing so today I made her a box. Took about 8 hours from starting with tearing up the pallet to finishing blowing sawdust off everything and putting all the tools away. It’s pretty generic but it works. Made a frame from the leftover crate wood 2x4s. Used screws to hold them together. Planned some slats, jointed the sides, cut to length. I shot brad nails to put the slats on, hope they hold. I used screws for the bottom slats so you can pick it up without it falling apart. Gonna use a free Harbor Freight tarp as a liner, fill the bottom half with sawdust, then the top half with potting soul for her flowers. Probably gonna stain it brown with some leftover fence stain to hopefully make it last a little while. It was a rush job but for pallet wood it’s good enough

I'm sure you were trying to hit some overall dimensions for the area you needed it to fit, but instead of a HF tarp as a liner, a person could build planter boxes to fit your standard rubbermaid or sterlite containers so that you have a nice waterproof liner to keep the rot away from the wood... Of course you'll have to add some drainage holes at the bottom, but at least the sides would be high and dry.

I suppose a pallet dismantler or pallet wrecker. There are a ton of different designs. I'm sure you can even purchase them. I just threw that one together with leftover steel I had lying around.

One set of teeth will fit around a single 2x4 on edge with a bit of wiggle room and the other set of teeth will fit around two 2x4's or one 4x4 on edge with some wiggle room. That way you can tackle most pallet configurations with it.

Taking a break from the boards to build a squirrel chair out of some extra pallet wood. It’s not done, but the pieces have been cut out. I just need to nail/glue it all together and maybe stain it or something idk

>> No.1837992

>>1837635
It's glued together so expansion won't matter. It will all move together as one piece. Wood glue is like welding, it's so strong that the board will fail in another place before it snaps on the glue line. It's exactly the same as a large table made from slats that's glued together. Also, it's made from pallet wood so it's not meant to be fancy. If this thread dies, should I keep going with the progress in another thread?..

It is a LOT of effort but I guess when you are belly down on your milking table you do not want splinters. Hole could have been smaller.
